Second stay, as good as first
My wife and I spent a week at HBR in March and returned again this November. My review of HBR in March didn't have many names included but this stay I made note of the names of those giving great service. The resort is kept very clean and beautiful. Check in is fast and you are treated like family. Our first full day at the resort we recognized many familiar faces of the staff. What was surprising was that they remembered us. As was the case with our visit in March, the staff was fantastic. I wanted to mention those that worked with the restaurant and gave us fantastic service: Alejandra (super), Angel, Noel, Sergio, Arnulfo. They all recognized us from our last visit and made us feel like family. Esperanza who kept us hydrated at the beach was super. I don't remember the name of the lady that cleaned our room every day but she also did a great job and was very nice. Jackie with the entertainment was great and couldn't have been nicer to us. The entertainment this trip was very good. We met a lot of very nice people this trip, couples from Canada, East Coast USA, West Coast USA. The mix of ages this trip was a little younger than our last visit. It is impressive how people of all ages get along so well at HBR.
Fourth Trip, some thoughts on making better
We came to this resort after a few stays at Couple San Souci in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. What brought us back on four different occasions (and counting) was the great service, location and food at the two Clothing Required sister resorts on each side of Hidden Beach. The restaurants are still very good, especially the Mexican in Sensimar and the Japanese and Italian in El Dorado Seaside Suites building. However there are some things that need to be better, the facility itself is showing a bit of age and needs more frequent attention. There are only two bars, one is in the pool, the other is in the night club. The night club needs a full renovation. It is a giant hall with a stage some very dated furniture and and a bar with no view and very few seats. Not a bar worthy of sitting at and enjoying the location of the resort. Couples San Souci has a far better situation. How about a bar on the roof of the restaurant with a view of the ocean? The entertainment needs a very big overhaul, this is partly due to the poor ambience of the night club, but also other factors. I've heard management blame the the entertainment on the changing age and demographics of the guests. Yet the foam party had plenty of older guests involved. So I don't feel that is a good excuse. We still love the place but hope they can stay current and exciting, because the competition for similar styled resorts is getting better as is the demand for such. And comparisons will be made. HBR flat out destroys most competition with the service and restaurants, but fail in comparison in quite a few important areas.
Second Trip 11/9-11/16
Just returned from our second trip. The most important thing I learned was that the only thing better than coming here was coming back here. The grounds are immaculate, our room spotless, the food very good, and every guest is as friendly as the next. But, and I can't emphasize this enough, the hard working staff was the absolute highlight of both trips. I can't remember all of their names but I'd like to single out a few- Alberto, Esperanza, Pedro, Aniceto, Arnulo. But the shining star of our trip was Jackie the activities director-so friendly, energetic and entertaining, she truly doubled our enjoyment of this vacation. Hope to be coming back to see all of them again soon.
Still Great, But Many Problems
We have visited Hidden Beach at least six times and belong to Karisma Resorts' Exotic Travel. I have reviewed this resort several times and always gave the highest marks. In many respects those reviews are still correct. The service is absolutely superb in all respects, the food was incomparable, the grounds are well-kept, the pool was warm, and Jacky the entertainment director was the best we have ever had. This makes it hard to list the other things that have gone bad. The first was the way our reservation was handled. We made our reservation for our November trip in May. Before we came, I specifically requested a second floor room. Instead, we were "rewarded" for our loyalty with a room on the third floor with no TV, a rattling A/C, and a shower with no pressure and inability to regulate the temperature. This, even though non-members and non-repeaters got the second floor rooms! We were told this was because the resort was 100% full. To add insult to injury, Mark, the manager, informed us that there were no TVs in the resort because of a dispute with the cable company. Then, when they finally moved us to a second floor room, we realized this was untrue because that room had a fully operational TV with all the channels! Moreover, the second room had a good A/C and a really nice shower. And we also don't believe the resort was 100% full, because pool lounges and beach beds were available all day long, which has never EVER happened before. It was bad enough that our loyalty meant nothing in making our reservation but don't lie to us, too. Elsewhere, the men's bathroom on the north side had no paper towels, let alone drying towels, for FIVE out of SEVEN days we were there -- even though I mentioned it to staff twice and to Mark once. The "hot tub" was about 120 degrees one day and the next would be cold. This and the bathroom issue are just plain sloppiness. In addition, in previous years, there was at least enough sand to walk next to the ocean. All week long the water was up on the seawall and waves crashing over it and into the lounge area. There is no more sand at all beyond the seawall. Is this sea level rise??? Dunno, and it's not Hidden Beach's fault, but it's still not a good sign. Bottom line is that you're paying an awful lot of money for a pool, food and drinks. We love it but there were enough bad experiences that we are going elsewhere next time. Hidden Beach is too costly to put up with BS like this.
By far the best all inclusive resort. The staff becomes like family after your first visit. Gabby starts the day out with Yoga or Stretching - then Sandy offers activities during the day and night - Gabby comes back for water aerobics to keep us active. The wait staff is incredible - they will do anything you ask for - and the bartenders and Esperanza keeps everyone filled up with every kind of drink. There was a group that performed during dinner on Thursday night that was awesome - played 60's and 70's music. Hope they keep them and find more similar entertainment. Always a fun time.
