Grand Velas was a beautiful resort, plenty of things to do for kids; my 10 year old son was never bored! Wonderful restaurants on site, and the staff was available at all times for special needs. I would definitely go back again.

Not as Good as Expected
I traveled in August with 2 teen boys and my 78 year old mother. While the hotel grounds were beautiful and staff mostly exceptional, I expected more for the price and am surprised at the ratings. Rooms We had a parlor suite ocean view with 2 Queen beds and an extra bed in the parlor area. We requested and received a room with 2 full bathrooms which was awesome. The room was large but needs a refresh. Ideally, the parlor would have a sofa bed as the cot like twin bed provided as an extra bed is not large enough for a teen. The hand held shower in one bathroom did not work and the sink clogged in the other. The maid service was excellent and the room was very clean. the beds were very comfortable. Beach/Pools Both lovely with good service and ample chairs/cabanas etc. The beach is clean with great waves for boogie boarding. The water is not clear but is very clean with no seaweed, We spent a ton of time in the ocean. We felt very safe and took long walks in both directions. Dining We found this area lacking for breakfast and lunch. the Azul buffet is just ok and is monotonous after a few days. I was turned off by the set up with chafing dishes and cold food exposed to heat, flies etc. The food options from Selva Del Mar were also limited - burgers, hot dogs. It would have been great if they had a pop up taco stand or a specialty lunch served poolside. the resort we were at last summer had both and coked up paella, chicken etc. The servers were very attentive. The specialty restaurants were very good with great food and service albeit a bit on the effusive side for a beach vacation. We really liked Piaf, Sen Lien and Lucca. I made reservations ion advance on Open Table. We did not care for Frida. The hotel could use a coffee/pastry/gelato bar where people could go for snacks throughout the day without having to go to a sit down restaurant. Room Service Excellent service and plenty of options. My teen boys ordered often - including lamb chops and filet. The Spa I went twice. The massage and facial were excellent. The facility itself is dated and could use a separate relaxation room. Activities for Teens This is a very quiet hotel. My teens were bored. They went on the bike ride (bikes were very old) and played pool and beach volleyball. They NEVER used the teen club because it was full of much younger kids which prevented them from wanting to go. This was really too bad because if teens (and only teens) used the teen club it would have provided an opportunity for teens to meet up. My boys dd meet a few other kids at the pool and beach but none of them wanted to use the teen club. The activities are not well organized or advertised. A few days no one showed up for volleyball, soccer etc. There was a short show every evening that my mother enjoyed. We never went to the Koi Bar but apparently they had music at night. The Downfall One afternoon, my 15 year old was served alcohol at more than one location and was obviously drunk. While I of course fault him for asking or not checking that it was a non-alcoholic drink - I was appalled that the staff was not trained better. This was an extremely dangerous situation with the beach and pools. While he was sick, it could have been much worse. Kids wear separate color wristbands and he never should have been served. My concierge contacted me about the incident and indicated that they reviewed security footage and had a staff meeting. I never heard from management at all. Service Very kind people with excellent services. The only downside is waiting for tips. I am a tipper and tipped at almost every meal and for assistance setting up chairs and for drinks. I was starting to get annoyed though with people standing waiting for tips. This might have been because i usually tipped. Also, I booked private cat service through the hotel and they basically contracted out with Vallarta Rides. I could have done this myself and saved a lot of money. I expected a car from the hotel. Would Not Return At least not with my teens. Probably ideal for families with small kids as the kids club looked great.
This is the third time we've been to GVRN. The previous two we went with our teenage children, so we got a suite, and this one was only with our baby, so we chose a standard room. It was fantastic as always. The property is incredible, the restaurants are amazing and the spa is pure bliss. But what makes GV unique is the level of service. We've travelled to many places around the world and no one can match the service of GV. The people are just extraordinary. GV offers a baby concierge which takes cares of bringing toys, a baby bath tub, arranging for babysitters, and coordinating the baby menu (fantastic natural baby purees). In addition you have your traditional private concierge which makes for a seamless experience. In our case, Maria was an extraordinary concierge helping us maximize our relaxation. For baby sitter we had Anahi which is the best. She has a great hand with children and babies, and made our couples night out entirely worry free. The restaurants are fantastic, including the new asian-inspired Sin Lin, but Piaf, Lucca, and Frida are probably better than ever. Again, the level of service everywhere including the bar (thanks Julio and Javier!) is out of this world. Finally, the waiters at Azul are incredible. All of them so nice, attentive, and professional. It's a pleasure to be in GV. The difficult decision in the future will be to return to GVRN or try some of the other propoerties. Keep up doing such a great work! Remember, do not compromise on quality or service as that is what makes GV unique. And keep the policies that have worked so well up to now (i.e. no music in the pool!). That's why it's luxury.
Still excellent but…...
This was our second time to GVRN. We've also been to the one in Cabo as well. The property, rooms, common areas, pool, restaurants are all still excellent as other reviewers have mentioned. I do feel like the level of service has slipped since we were there last year. We didn't hear from our butler after the first day and the service at Frida was incredibly slow the night we were there. Where I think this hotel stands out, is the service you get from the pool concierges. Last year we didn't figure out to find your person and stick with them until the last couple days of our trip. This trip, we found Leonel (who was our favorite last year) and Alberto and Gerardo. These three guys made our vacation. They kept us happy, hydrated and were amazing at anticipating our needs before we even thought to ask. A couple of examples, moving umbrellas to shield us from the sun later in the day. I don't drink alcohol and asked for water and they just get them coming for me. They learned what we liked, what our kids liked and didn't like and went out of their way to get us anything and everything under the sun. And it wasn't just us. I saw them treating everyone in their "section" the same. We celebrated our anniversary while we were there and they had fun drinks made out of fruit to look like animals and brought them for us and the kids. If GV was smart, they'd have these three teaching the other pool concierges how to do it because they are not all like this. We got left to our devices too many times on our last trip and it only took once this trip for me to be left for over an hour in the hot sun without any water. I was thrilled to see Leonel again and made sure to find him every day. So my biggest tip for visiting GVRN? Find them at the pool or beach as soon as you can.
