Absolute best all-inclusive resort in Los Cabos!

I have nothing but amazing things to say about the Grand Velas Los Cabos! To start, the resort itself is absolutely stunning. The pools were amazing, the building, the suites, everything was so clean and up to date. The food was also absolutely phenomenal! Every restaurant is a different cuisine, and they were all absolutely delicious and flavorful. Most importantly, the staff at the Grand Velas Los Cabos was the icing on the cake. From the men who take your drink/food orders at the pool, to the waiters/waitresses at the restaurants, to the butlers, this staff had to be the absolute kindest, most helpful staff I have ever encountered while staying at a resort. I have to give an extra thank you to Lizbeth, who was my boyfriend and I's butler throughout our whole stay. She was always alert whenever we needed her or had any questions, and was extremely helpful with reservations and plans throughout the entire trip. I cannot recommend the Grand Velas Los Cabos enough. It may be a little on the pricey side, but I felt as if I got my full money's worth and it was completely worth the price I paid. I will 100% be returning here next year.

All-inclusive vs. Cruise; and some things to know.

Grand Velas los Cabos deserves every twinkle of its five stars. But rather than rave about what people have already said, I’d like to make some observations that might be helpful to some people, especially those who have gone on high-end or concierge-level cruises and are considering Grand Velas as a land based alternative. My husband and I cruise, not for the ports – but to use the cruise ship as a luxury resort that happens to be a ship. We hardly ever leave the ship, and in fact adore port days because the crowds leave and we have the ship more to ourselves. Some of the reviews here make it sound like the service at GV is unheard of elsewhere. We found it very similar to what we expect and get on high-end and concierge-level cruises. I don’t mean to denigrate the service, which is fantastic. But it’s not unique. We will definitely go to Grand Velas again and reduce our number of cruises for several reasons. First we aren’t bound by cruise schedules. We can take a long weekend, or an 11 day vacation. We can start and stop any day we like. Second, there’s no worry about seasickness, which we sometimes get, especially on day one. And the big third, you don’t have to pack up the night before the “last day” and the last day doesn’t have to end at 8am. It was a real treat for us to have a normal wonderful night out our last night, wake up at a decent hour, have a leisurely and wonderful breakfast, take a little walk, then go to our room, pack and leave at about noon. For those of you who don’t cruise, you probably don’t know why this is so wonderful. But you have to leave your luggage out the night before you dock, and the last morning on a cruise, and “the forced march” off the ship can wreck the atmosphere of the previously relaxing week. So now for non-cruisers. Yes the service is great. It’s friendly and personal, and no request seems to be seen as unreasonable. More about service later. The food is excellent. We especially enjoyed Lucca (Italian) and Velas 10 (the steak place). La Cucina de Autor was very interesting. We did have the chef’s table. Some courses were great, all lived up to the description of the cuisine as being “creative.” Azul, the buffet doesn’t have that quantity over quality feel of many buffets. The choices are extensive but delicious and beautifully displayed. The swimming pools are wonderful. I had read some recent reviews from people who were there over the holidays and they mentioned having to reserve chaises early in the day – not so for us in January. We could always get chaises wherever we wanted – if not the exact spot we wanted, at least a few chaises away. When you first arrive, Grand Velas feels positively labyrinthine, because not all elevators go to all floors and not all floors connect at the same locations. And the whole place is on a hill so there is a bit of up and down ramps and steps. But by two or three days in, we were old hands, and if you’re ever lost, any employee will not only point you in the right direction, they will walk you to where you’re going. The spa was lovely and as people have said – definitely do the water ceremony, it’s fun and VERY relaxing. In fact, when we go back I will gladly pay for the water ceremony even if I don’t have a massage. A little fun thing – on the weekend a delightfully cheerful fellow wheels an ice cream cart around, but instead of ice cream he has fruit ices in little cups. If you’d like, he pours some tequila (and/or perhaps rum) in the cup and puts the ices back in. I had mine plain and it was so refreshing. The “activity kids” (I’m old so they were kids to me) who organize events around the pool areas and lead water aerobics were great. They are enthusiastic and friendly without sounding like game show hosts – and without being pushy at all, if you don’t want to participate. And the events aren’t tacky at all. One great thing we did was a behind the scenes tour with Edgar, the activities manager. We learned that GV has its own desalinization plant. WOW. And all of the bottled water that is available both in your room and throughout Grand Velas is bottled right there in the hotel. We also learned some of the secrets as to why the employees all seem so cheerful and happy to be there. They get free meals, free transportation to and from town where they most live, and free on-site daycare for their kids (well managers have to pay – but still it’s free for most employees). Also, for anyone somewhat nervous about traveling to Mexico, security at GV is great. It’s located somewhat in the middle of nowhere. And on our behind the scenes tour we also learned that all employees have to go through TSA level screening PLUS a breathalyzer both coming into work and leaving. If they offer the tour (the activity kids told us about it), I suggest you take it. We don’t have children and, truth by told, really aren’t the most kid-friendly people. And there were quite a few small-fry sharing the week with us. But between the size of the place, and something about the layout – even when kids were having a noisy game of water football, we couldn’t hear them very well. And all of the kids seemed to be having a complete blast. One thing to remember is that although there are many American and, surprisingly, Australian guests, this is a Mexican resort and while all employees who interact with the guests speak English, not all of them are as fluent as others. Some people find this a fun reminder that they have traveled to another country. I found it a little frustrating to have to simplify my language sometimes, particularly in the high-end restaurants, where we had a few lost in translation moments, like when we were brought gluten-free bread when my husband said he was allergic to nuts. This is a very minor, and somewhat idiosyncratic concern. Back to another great little thing – our travel agent arranged for the hotel’s limo to pick us up at the airport. Another small group was waiting for their limo next to us. As they were handed bottles of water, we were handed cold towels before our bottles of water. The woman in the other group elbowed her friend and pointed with just a little bit of jealousy. Honestly, isn't that fun on a vacation? We will definitely go back to Grand Velos and I would have made reservations already, but we’re going to try to get some friends to go with us next year, but we haven’t told them yet. Before I list some extra special employees, I’d like to comment on friendliness. My husband and I do not like overly-friendly staff. We don’t like overly-enthusiastic staff. We are not embarrassed by being paying guests, and like a little deference. BUT we also appreciate friendliness that feels sincere and unforced. I admit we present a very small target when talking about great service. So it is with delight that I say that overall Grand Velos los Cabos hit the bullseye. And here are some employees who were the best of the best: Laura our lovely room concierge who answered our text even on her day off; Jose and Victor at Azul (and Beatrix) who made breakfast at Azul feel so relaxed and luxurious; Sebastian and Lucero, our favorite “activity kids;” and the aforementioned Edgar Aguirre

There is no better in Los Cabos!

There is simply only one way to describe Grand Velas Los Cabos...PERFECT. From the moment we arrived to the second we left, we were treated like family. The service across all of the staff...concierge, room service, restaurant staff, pool staff, bell men, activity staff...was the best we have ever experienced. All were so kind, always treated us like we were their sole concern and even taught us some Spanish along the way! Aside from the world-class service, the food here was incredible. The staff at Frida was out of this world, making the Mexican cuisine experience one to remember. Lucca in particular offers some of the best Italian food we have ever tasted in our lives...and we’re from NYC! And I simply can’t find the right words to describe Cocina de Autor. Experiencing the cooking and presentation of a 2-star Michelin chef is once in a lifetime experience. We were in need of a true R&R vacation and Grand Velas Los Cabo’s delivered that and then some. The Spa experience was one of a kind - highly recommend the water ceremony. Also, coming in January is incredible because, little did we know, it’s whale watching season. Sitting at the pool and seeing a humpback whale breach the water off in the distance is not something you see everyday. Lastly, personal shout out and thank you to our personal concierge Lizbeth who really just embodied the entire resort as a whole. She was incredibly kind, always greeted us with a huge smile, was genuinely happy for us when we had a great day (which was every day) and did not allow us to lift a finger the entire week. Nothing was out of the question in terms of something she could handle - getting us room service, arranging activities for us in Cabo San Lucas, arranging transportation to other resorts to see friends, even preparing a romantic jacuzzi experience for us in the room...she handled EVERYTHING. We could not have asked for a better concierge and the trip simply would not have been the same without her. In summary, you cannot go wrong with Grand Velas Los Cabos. World class service, high quality eats, the best staff on the planet and overall incredible vibe for a perfect vacation in Los Cabos. Thank you, Grand Velas!

    The best - every time!

This is my third Velas property, and again, they didn’t disappoint. Top notch in every category possible. The pools are amazing. The restaurants are top notch. The service is the best. You can’t go wrong here and your family will love the experience.

    A honeymoon in heaven

My husband and I just spent the most wonderful week at the Grand Velas in Cabo. The property is beautiful, and we literally watched whales from our balcony every morning, but the service is truly what made the difference. It’s as if every single staff member went above and beyond every chance they got. Javier at the pool was so kind and fun that he actually got me and my husband to exercise via water aerobics every day. Abigail took care of our every wish during our stay, and he actually seemed sad to see us go (not as sad as we were, I’m sure!). And CARLA!!! Carla, our personal concierge took care of EVERYTHING for us, from activities to advice to reservations. She helped us upgrade to the most wonderful room and was just a constant source of happiness. Overall, the only complaint we had was the food wasn’t quite what we had hoped for. Overall, we felt we found the “best” places and foods by the end of our trip, and it made all of the difference. We are already planning our next trip here with our families, and we can’t wait!
