Things to Know about the Fairmont Orchid and the Area
Stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for a long date weekend with my husband and absolutely loved this hotel for the following reasons: 1) The hotel is clean, upscale and has beauitful grounds. It is truly a resort type of hotel, where you could easily spend days here and never leave the grounds, The beauch is beautiful, the pool is wonderful and the gardens and landscape are top notch. The hotel itself is large with plenty of areas to walk around or to just sit and enjoy the sunsets. 2) Rooms are spacious, clean and quiet -- that's a triple threat and a winner in my book. Housekeeping comes 2x a day and they supply you with small bottles of water each night, which is a small gesture but really goes a long way with me. You can easily ask them for additionals as well. Other need-to-knows: 1)) Food at the hotel is expensive. Expect to spend at least $50/pp for dinner, and this doesn't include wine or anything like that. In fact, that is for your entree alone, without any sides. 2) The hotel is remote. It's located in Puako or they also seem to call the area Waikoloa. It is about a 20 min drive from the airport, and it's also about 20 mins away from Kailua. There are three shopping centers located all within about 10 minutes away, within the resort areas. They do have some restaurants in them and they are less expensive. I didn't mind this at all, and I really loved the quiet peacefulness of this hotel because of it's location.
Very underwhelmed by the room and service
Wow, you book an "deluxe ocean view" room to find out that it's at best a partial view from the balcony. The view from the room is only of their other building across the way. I called the front desk to find if they had accidentally put us in the wrong room and was told that we were indeed in the deluxe ocean view and that you can look out from your balcony to see the ocean. They said that the third party vendor (United Airlines Vacations) may have led us astray. I'm currently on hold for over 30 minutes waiting for United Vacations to answer their phone.
Great place if money is no object
If you can afford it, this was one of the finest hotel stays in my travel career. we have visited several hotels on Kona, and this is probably the finest we have used. Very friendly and professional staff. Book the Gold Floor
Service was outstanding; when it comes to the Fairmont their customer service is near impeccable. The team was extraordinarily polite and supremely accommodating. The hotel boasts gorgeous views and offers a sanctuary for the many sea-turtles on the island. They make snorkeling a blast! The rooms were clean, spacious, and routinely serviced. Valet was, also, quite polite and rates were more than generous. Overall, it is an excellent hotel. One of the best on the island.
Perfect trip-friendly staff.
So glad we chose the Fairmont. Beautiful resort with nice heated pool (great for night swims) and beach with decent snorkeling. Everywhere we went the staff was so friendly. Especially the staff at the breakfast buffet which was so tasty. They changed the food selections each day so we never got tired of it. They had really yummy malasadas!! One of our best trips ever and we have been to Hawaii over twenty times.
