Incredible spot, don't listen to all of the negative reviews
Just got back two days ago from Dreams Playa Bonita. Staff: Incredibly helpful. Everyone was so nice, and though many of the staff didn't speak English, they tried so hard to accommodate anything you needed. Lots of reviews arrogantly bemoan the fact that not everyone at the resort speaks English... YOU'RE IN PANAMA... not New York. Enjoy the culture and people of Panama. Use your smartphone to learn a few spanish words... it's not that difficult. Food/Drink: We really liked the food. The menus had enough variety that we could all find something we liked. Here and there something wasn't the best we'd ever had... but that's the same in any restaurant. The drinks were made well and the wine selection was great. We often ate breakfast at the Seaside Grille. The buffet there seemed to have more selection than at the Market Cafe, plus you could sit outside in the shade and breeze of the ocean. Rooms: Our room was very nice. It's all tile, which makes it feel cleaner. We travel a LOT, and it was one of the nicer rooms we've had(typically staying in a Marriott or equivalent)... particularly in a tropical climate. We stayed at Secrets Riviera Maya when it first opened, so that was easily the best AMResorts room we'd had... but the room at Playa Bonita was in far better condition than the one we had at Secrets Wild Orchid in Jamaica. We had a balcony facing the canal/sunrise, which was an incredible way to wake up every morning. There are plenty of little kits in the bathroom in case you forgot anything (toothbrush, razor, etc). Never had an issue with getting more toilet paper or towels... but then again, I'm not helpless. If we needed more, I grabbed some from the service cart on my way back to the room. The room service carts are always out... enjoy the walk and go grab some. The WiFi was fast, all the time (unlike Secrets Jamaica, which was spotty, at best). I got a strong signal pretty much everywhere on the property. We were able to stream movies in our room at any time of day. Grounds: The grounds are very well kept. The grass is green, the paths are clean, and the staff goes out before sunrise to fog for insects (don't sweat the reviews that mention the noseeums... we never put on bug spray and between the four of us, I'm the only one that got bit at all... once, and we ate outside at almost every meal). They have a free jungle tour that leaves from the resort, during which you can see sloths. There are random things that are dated, but by and large, it's very very well kept. On multiple occasions I saw a few staff members freshening up the exterior paint on different buildings. The pool is fantastic. It's zero entry with an infinity edge facing the water. Our kids loved it. The resort is relatively small and quiet, compared to most AMResort properties, which we loved. There were always chairs at the pool we could grab, no matter what time we got out there. There are plenty of shaded spots to sit too. The beach was awesome. There are millions of shells to check out. The tide goes out really far, so there's more to see as it goes out. We saw sting rays, which was a highlight for our kids. There's a bunch of pelicans that are constantly bombing into the water getting fish, which is entertaining to watch. The sand by the resort is very well kept and is comfortable to walk/sit on. We were here on a business trip, but would come back on our own. We very much enjoyed the resort. Some people in our group did get pretty sick, including one of our family. Frankly, I'd chalk that up to advising to stick to bottled water (which is stocked in your room, available at the restaurants, and at the poolside bar... though we also tested the limits with medium rare Tuna, which is a gamble in any country.) Even with that, we'd definitely go back.
Ok, so where do I begin...let me just start by saying we usually travel with a group of 12 or more and always stay at a AMresorts facility..mostly secrets and breathless and have stayed at a couple dreams as well and have always loved those resorts and have had excellent service and food and this by far was the worst. The rooms need some TLC like others have mentioned. Our house keeper was Iris and she did a great job all week. The rooms do need a deep cleaning and updating. We have always had great food at the other resorts this on the other hand was not that good... even went to some restaurants more than once and it was hit or miss. We were with a group of 28 and at least 8 of us were sick with vomiting and diarrhea. After talking to others at the resort there were many that were sick as well. I don’t know if it was food related or a virus going around the resort. There are shows however, we missed most of them because the paper they give you with the activities during the day and night was incorrect....we were told by a member of the entertainment team shows are always at 8:30 not 9:00 as stated in the paper. We paid extra for the preferred club, the bartenders at the preferred pool were great however, there were many many times they didn’t have Diet Coke, bananas etc to make drinks. We went on the rainforest hike and that was awesome...it’s about 2/12 hours and up hill. Our guide was very informative and it was a nice break from the sun. I was apprehensive about coming here because some of the reviews were bad and I like to keep an open mind but, after being here for a week some of the bad is true. Did it ruin our vacation..absolutely not, we all still had a great time. Would we return to this resort....probably not.On a positive note Some of our group wanted to leave the resort and have dinner in town..Jose gave us suggestions and set up transportation back to dreams..he went above and beyond and everyone loved the brewery and pizza place he suggested.
2nd stay with Dreams. 2 different countries... don't do it!
Each company trip that has been booked with Dreams has been terrible! Drinks and food make you feel sick! Eat off resort and no longer drink at the resort... magically feel normal again! Many of the guests from our company each trip got food poisoning that took them down for 24 -48hr at 2 different locations.
Hotel was very clean and staff were very friendly! The pools were very nice and the drink selection at the bars was great. The entertainment was set up very nicely. There were not many excursions available, but the ones they have are very good. The resort is in some need of updating but overall is very nice.
