When booking the room weeks in advance was able to use suite night upgrades. I called the night before checking and dad told by a manager that there were upgrades available. When we checked in I found out that we were lied to. No upgrades. I am very high status with marriott and every stay I have had had been amazing. This hotel has been the worst experience. I am here for five days and unfortunately stuck. The bathroom door isn't even attached! Very disappointed
In a pinch, because you have no choice
When you are forced to stay there, need to be close to the airport (15 min) and shops (for business), do not mind the grunge nature of downtown Kona with tourists and homeless abound. Status was not recognized, I was lied about available upgrades, the pool is pee warm, warmer than the air, the beach looks nice, however there is cutting lava rocks lurking under the shallow water all over, and it is the boat ramp for Kona, so the water quality is awful, essentially useless. If you can avoid it, do yourself that favor and go with the Sheraton at least (it is also similarly dated).
Hotel choice depends on your plan.
This hotel is best for people who wish to be next to the main tourist dinning and entertainment strip, the breweries and some shopping. There is a strip mall area within walking distance just up the street and dinning within a few hundred feet. The big mall with all the stores in just about a mile away. The rooms were adequate but were small and some have partial ocean views and parking lot views. Also depending on what you plan to do you may wish to choose a room that receives afternoon sun to dry gear on your deck; these are the rooms facing away from the tourist strip. Bathrooms are small and have passive ventilation so they get humid. You need to also check for other activities in the area before choosing this hotel as it is noted to be a main hotel for the Iron man competition and other activities and the area can be very crowded. When we were there it was the King Kamehameha celebration and the hotel pool was packed to the point of disfunction and the hotel beach was also very crowded. There is a public ocean swimming entry area very close by which looks better when its is crowed at hotel beach. In general the rooms were clean and housekeeping appeared to do a good job. Parking is $ 25/24 hr. The little balconies are nice but you would always want to keep your room locked when away as balconies are close. So depends on interests and price.
Better choices elsewhere
Paid a fair price for a beach view but got a second floor room with a roof view of the convenience store next door. When I complained, they said they had no rooms with a better view. Considering how many hotels are In Kona, I would go elsewhere next time.
A worn out hotel that is not up to Marriott standards
We are in Kona for only two nights on our way back home so we went for a relatively inexpensive hotel that had a good location. This hotel is a perfect example of the principle that you get what you pay for. The place is worn out. The furniture in the room is all chipped, stained and flimsy. The electric outlets on the two lamps between the beds do not work. Luckily I brought "multipliers" that we were able to use on the two remaining outlets in the room so we could recharge our phones or computers while watching TV or making coffee. The bathroom is so small that you cannot have two people in there at the same time. The safe in the room did not work. There are no black out curtains on the windows so the morning sun will wake you up at 6 AM. The entire hotel, inside and outside, needs a paint job. I doubt if I would stay here again.
