A-OK. The most HONEST review.
Honestly, i didn’t enjoy my stay at Catalonia due to the many many judgmental couples ! I felt uncomfortable around the other guests who seemingly could not keep their eyes to themselves. I’ve made life long friends at other places and resorts I’ve stayed at. But of course, the resort is not responsible for the actions of their guests. So it is what it is. Just a FYI. Lots of Europeans and Italians. With that said, if you’re looking for a low-key and intimate weekend with your partner — this is the best place to be !!! It’s a jungle feel and there’s barely any music — which i found weird. Especially by the pool. Food— as the daughter of a chef, I’ll leave the critique to someone else as i thought it was subpar. However the options were good. I absolutely hated that only room service was available past 11pm with very limited options. Rauxa was an interesting experience. I can’t say much on the show because I’m from NYC— land of the theater and arts so I’m a bit harsh when critiquing. Food was delish. The location is about 1hr20mins from the airport and about 40mins from Playa del Carmen (aka the club hub). The staff — amazing. If the staff wasn’t as great as they were, i would have had a terrible stay. Jose, Jesus, Isabella, Raul, Sofia, Fernando & the many others — thank you for making my stay truly heartwarming. I have never met a group of people filled with such compassion and love all under one roof. Thank you for making this vacation exceptional. I hope to visit you all whenever i return to MX! God bless!
First time at Royal Talum
If you want something small and more intimate, this is the place. I’ve been to bigger resorts so it was a bit shocking for me to see such a small resort and only 1 pool. Also not a big fan of the animals that time around the walk way as they look like oversized rats to me as rats are one of my biggest fears.
Everyone was excellent, food was great. I wish the location was closer to the airport, as the transfer ride is a little long, but other than that it was the perfect vacation for adults only in our family. It would be nice to have "snacks" delivered to the pool area rather than going to the snack bar. Also at times it took the lady with drinks a long time to get back with our drinks, but I understand that she is also serving other visitors. Thank you staff for taking such great care of us.
Great stay for your money and the staff is great! The swim up bar is fun. The rooms were clean and cool. The food was just average, breakfast was the best meal of the day. The pool is very large so doesn't seem crowed.
The best vacation
My husband and I have been to the Catalonia Tulum twice now, for weeklong getaways (once in June, once in January). We will certainly be back another time. The property is gorgeous and feels more intimate and unique than a standard all-inclusive resort. They did a great job of maintaining the natural beauty of the jungle. You really feel like you are right amongst the trees--and there are friendly coati and iguanas all around. The beach is lovely, and the pool provides a nice respite from the sand towards the end of the day. Both times that we came here we signed up for the "privileged" access. It was worth it, mostly because you get all-inclusive access to the Beloved restaurant overlooking the beach. The food there is delicious (organic, healthy). There are several places to eat around the property. Besides Beloved and the Mexican restaurant, the other "speciality" restaurants are only so-so and not really worth going. The regular buffet generally has good food and a lot of options. I like to get the fish grilled to order. There are tons of delicious fruits and juices. I have food allergies (gluten and dairy), and have always been impressed by the level of service and accommodation I receive at the buffet (and everywhere I've eaten at the resort). In particular, Aida, Esthier, Julio, and Quetza made sure every time I went to the buffet I knew what I could and could not eat. They made a notation of my allergies on my room number, so that every time I arrived at the hostess stand, someone would either walk me along the buffet to show me what I could eat, or would bring me gluten free bread for breakfast. The servers and staff were all so friendly and professional. I can say that about the staff throughout the whole resort--they really take pride in the work they do. The service is excellent. If you want to go off the resort (to downtown Tulum or one of the cenotes or ruins), the hotel can help you set up a taxi or other transportation. The tour people that come to the lobby of the hotel can be pushy--but just be firm if you do not want any part of the tour companies. Another thing to note- the customers are largely from Europe and Canada, which was nice as an American tourist! You are surrounded by all different kinds of languages.
