Lovely resort, great entertainment. Restaurants are fab, recommended the Japanese restaurant. Rooms need a little TLC, some staff need to smile more. Got the impression that they weren't keen on British citizens, much preferred the French, Spanish and Russians...... just an observation. However, would return again
My partner and I stayed here for 11 nights between 10th and 21st September. First of all, the resort is huge and is actually made up of two hotels: Catalonia Yucatan and Catalonia Riviera Maya (I think). We stayed in the Yucatan. 5 or 6 restaurants: 2 buffet style, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, tapas and grill. There’s also BLoved, which is not included in the all inclusive unless you upgrade. The food in all of the restaurants is good. The Japanese tepinyaki, in particular, was OUTSTANDING. The choice in the buffet restaurants was great, and you could always find something to eat. Breakfast buffet was awesome! 5 or 6 bars - 2 in the pools, one at either end of the beach, sports bar and one in the lounge of the Riviera Maya. All open til various points of the evening. The bar staff are great and very attentive. Our room was clean and comfortable. The maids did a great job and kept it spotless throughout our stay - even doing some fancy towel animals for us! The bathroom was a little dated but totally clean and functional. Nice balcony looking out onto the pool (room 2144), which was nice to sit in the morning and watch the birds in the trees. The pools were always busy - even from 7am there was people out sunbathing! There were trial scuba lessons in the pools, although I didn’t try that out. The entertainment team were out in force every day. Personally I’m not into that but if you are, I know they put everything into their job so I’m sure they are great. Honestly, we spent most of our time on the beach. Such a gorgeous beach, great sun loungers, good shade and near the beach bar! If you go in for a swim take some of those water shoes or go in on your belly and pull yourself out into the deep. The water is beautifully clear and there’s lots of fish that will swim right past you! You can also get snorkelling gear to get a closer look. There are many comments about seaweed on Trip Advisor.... and quite honestly the comments are unwarranted. Yes (of course) seaweed washes up on the shore overnight. And there’s a team out every morning at 7am sweeping it from along the shore out of guests way. There is no smell - I did not once smell rotting seaweed. Do not believe the other, over exaggerated reviews on this. Other than first thing in the morning I have never seen a more seaweed-free beach in my life - and I grew up in a seaside area. If you’re a couple looking for something special, definitely go for Dinner Under The Stars. Luckily for me this included a proposal (!) and it was a beautiful setting. Our server could not have been more courteous or friendly. We tipped our barman, daily. He’d remember our drinks and pick up our empties, as well as suggesting some cocktails. We also tipped in the restaurants each day. The servers were all really pleasant and friendly. I cannot compliment the staff enough. Thank you so much Catalonia Yucatan- we had a magical stay with you. So much so I didn’t want to leave!
Holiday from hell
Thanks to this hotel ive been signed off work with severe stress due to being that close to having a nerves breakdown. From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out it was nothing but stress it didnt help that thomas cook went under while staying there and the way the hotel (reception) treated us during this period was terrible. Basically we had half hour to pay for the remainder of the holiday otherwise there where de-activating our room keys and when people where asking why they just laughed in your face. Hows that saying go “ dont know there arses from there elbow” amount of money i saved and spent on this holiday makes me feel sick the fact i now have nothing and cannot even say it was money well spent. Only good thing i can say is the weather was the highlight of the holiday
Got to this hotel after a long journey. Greeted with a smile and a glass of bubbly. Check in was speedy and staff were friendly enough. Heard from past reviews about being given a tour but that didn't happen with us. Would have been appreciated as the resort looks quite big but there are many shortcuts to get around which you won't find without exploring thoroughly or having a tour. We had a privileged room but the only benefit was that you got soft drinks and beer in your fridge in addition to the 2 bottles of water. Room was extremely dark which was very off putting given the bright sun outside. The plunge pool was actually a bath on the balcony but there was absolutely no privacy with this whatsoever - don't be fooled by this! Normal pools were good and the entertainment around the pool was excellent. Had breakfast in BeLoved and though staff were very attentive, I wouldn't say the food was as a-la-carte. Whilst the eggs Benedict was good (though sometimes overcooked), they used (very dry) bread rolls you get in the buffet's at breakfast time, instead of muffins! The Italian was not good (My Kitchen Rules would not have been impressed with the Ossobucco). We were Thomas Cook guests and when we heard about the collapse the staff at the hotel said we had no reason to worry. The Monday after the announcement came we were given letters saying the CAA would take care of us and if we are asked to pay the hotel we should not pay but contact them in the first instance. It did say if we paid without speaking with them we would not be refunded. No worries as the hotel had already said we would be OK. However later that day, we were being asked to pay for the rest of our stay. A number of guests were very upset and some paid. Having received the letter I wasn't worried but was very disappointed at the behavior of the reception staff to those guests who were worried. Complete about turn with no empathy whatsoever - some of them were even laughing. They were saying that Thomas Cook hadn't paid them. Many guests became fearful and I believe some made payments. By the next day, the hotel had appreciated they would be paid and resumed good customer service. The level of rudeness shown the previous day wasn't something you would forget in a hurry. Came back to our room one day to find our safe wasn't working - wouldn't open. Called and someone came to fix it but they didn't seem to understand the question when we asked what had happened to it. Just played with it then asked us to put in a different code! We didn't have any valuables in there as I had read about some issues and kept our money in our locked suitcase. Japanese restaurant was a fantastic experience. La Brista (not a-la-carte) was very good, much better than the Italian. There was seaweed and the staff worked very hard to clear this every day and I didn't find the smell at all off putting. Shops on site was expensive as were the excursions. Walk to marina was nice but you can only go there so many times. 10 min walk to get an expensive drink that you could get in one of the many bars / restaurants in the resort! The resort was very dated and could do with a full upgrade, holiday was nice but have to say I was expecting more.
