The dinner reservation process here is enough to know you SHOULD NOT book at this resort
20 years of all inclusive vacations and never experienced such an inept dinner reservation process. It’s not possible to book on the app. There is 6 of us in the group, we can’t even book for individual groups of 2. I stood in line from 7:15am for the concierge desk to open at 8am and he booked us for a restaurant, only to show up and we didn’t have the reservation. It really shouldn’t be this difficult. Maybe if one of the restaurants was popular and difficult to get into, but we can’t get into one of the restaurants.

Catalonia Rivera Mayan
3rd and final year at this hotel. It's too bad, you have a beautiful property and great staff and rooms. Your Al a Carte lottery is a nightmare, who wants to be on their phone at 8 am every day to try and secure a booking that never comes? I'm on vacation. Your buffet was your last saving grace but you changed it. How can you expect people to eat the same thing every day and have no option for an al a Carte? Why did you change the buffet??? And what's with no toilet seats in the beach bathroom? Perching on the edge of a porcelain toilet seat so I don't fall in is not my idea of luxury. Sorry, for the amount of money I paid I can go elsewhere and have a sane booking method for al a carte restaurants. Extremely disappointed, I thought we had found our yearly destination, we'll keep looking.

Probably won’t be back
Just finishing a 7 day vacation at the Catalonia RM. This resort is pretty average, has most of the amenities you’d expect with an all inclusive. There are a few things I’d like to mention, and think the resort could definitely do better. First off, for anyone with a food sensitivity, good luck! My husband has a dairy intolerance, he simply cannot have dairy. The buffets, including the staff, are less than accommodating. In the past he’s been able to get away with pasta bars, there are none here. So, he asked if they would be able to make him a pasta dish or pizza (other resorts were happy to do so), no go. So, if you’re in the same boat with a food sensitivity, look elsewhere. Also, iced coffee (guilty pleasure) forget about it! And yes, they do have it at the lobby bar but that’s not realistic if you’re not in the lobby bar! We are genuinely confused why there are 2 separate resorts within one resort, the Catalonia RM and Yucatan. We spent the majority of our time at the Yucatan but booked with the RM. The marketing makes me question why? It’s definitely not necessary. Here’s a big one, there are NOT enough beach chairs for everyone at the resort. We are early risers so it wasn’t an issue for us but if you aren’t up and around before 6:30-7:00, good luck finding chairs. Not sure if it’s unusually busy right now or what but we’ve seen many disputes over beach chairs. In saying that, the beach is great for snorkelling. I’ve read many posts that say the beach is terrible. It isn’t! Rocky in places so please do bring water shoes but rocky beaches usually mean more fish for snorkelling. The breakwater makes the beach manageable and enjoyable. We would highly recommend renting a golf cart $30USD for 2 hours ($60USD full day) and cruising around to watch the dolphins at the Marina.

charming place
I've read some negative opinion about Catalonia Riviera Maya and I was a little afraid, but this hotel surprised me very pleasantly. Our privilege room was comfortable and just renovated, nice swimming pools and garden where rodents called agouti were walking. Beach was beautiful, water clear and turquoise. They take great care about cleanliness. Food was same every day, but was not bad. There was a show every night but I missed some Mexican and Mayan shows. All Puerto Adventuras is lovely and safe place with lots of restaurants, stores, marina and even dolphins. I recommended Catalonia and I would like to come back.

Beautiful and relaxed resort. Hope to return some day.
For context in case it is helpful - we are a couple in our mid-thirties and travelled alone from Canada. We do not have any kids, but we are expecting, this was our "babymoon." We could see that this resort was definitely family friendly with lots for kids and families to enjoy, but there was an equal focus on adult activities as well. Room - The room (premium deluxe) was simple, but clean and beautiful. It had everything we needed, although it would have been convenient to have a clock in the room. Sound proofing of the room was decent; We couldn't hear our neighbours on either side, above, or below at all, which was nice. As with most places, the doors are where the sound really comes through. We did often hear other guests and people in the hallways and on the stairs, but that was expected and didn't bother is too much. Unfortunately a LOT of people seemed to slam their doors all the time which was very loud and echoey and irritating - this is not a reflection of the resort itself of course. I enjoyed that the shower offered the option for both rainfall shower head, and regular. My husband loves rainfall showers, but I hate them, so it was nice to have the option for each of us. Atmosphere/activities - We passed by a lot of resorts which were bigger and "fancier" but we truly loved the vibe of this resort. It was relaxed, and laid back; we felt at home and at ease. There were activities going on all day if you wanted to participate, which I really enjoyed. There was a great mix of activities for adults, as well as children. The beach was great, and the water was fantastic. There were so many fun and beautiful sea creatures to see, my husband could have snorkeled all day observing them all. The pools were great and plentiful. We were able to walk on and off the resort at our leisure, and just a 5-10 minute walk down the road was a wonderful marina with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants, activities, pharmacies, dolphins and manatees. We also happened upon a wonderful night market there with a lot of vendors. The marina area, along with our resort (among a few others) and some private residences were within a gated community and we felt incredibly safe. We enjoyed that everything was very close by and "compact" it was not overwhelming to get anywhere or find anything. This was especially appreciated due to my pregnancy, as I get tired quickly and need to rest often; but I honestly would have appreciated it regardless. Staff - I did not interact with a single staff member that wasn't incredibly warm, kind, and helpful. Even without asking, on a handful of occasions staff approached me and asked how they could help (I guess my "I'm lost" face must be obvious. LOL) and they were always very helpful in pointing me in the right direction or to someone who would be able to better assist me. Restaurants - the buffets were wonderful with a lot of options. The snack bars were great! Of the sit down restaurants we had the opportunity to try all but two of them. We had wonderful meals and wonderful service at all of them. We didn't realize that Ayami, the Japanese restaurant was hibachi, which was a fun surprise!! It came with 4 courses, and was a wonderful experience. The restaurant booking system was difficult in that the website opens for reservations each morning at 8am and everyone is rushing to book their ideal restaurant/time slot. If you don't get in by 8:10-8:15ish, you're probably out of luck. The staff at the guest service hut are very helpful with this if you are having difficulty with the website, but ultimately if everything books up, they can't do much. Some online reservation systems will hold your timeslot for a couple of minutes until you finish filling in your information, however this system does not. So you might pick a timeslot, and then by the time you enter your name, room number and telephone number, someone else might have taken it and you have to start over. This happened to me 2x one morning, and I finally got a reservation on the 3rd try, for 9:00 pm. It's hard for me to fault the resort for this, and I don't know if there is any way it could be fixed - dinner reservations are simply in high demand, and I understand this to be the case for many resorts. Fortunately, if you're unable to get a reservation for dinner on any particular night, there are other options; the buffet is fantastic as mentioned previously, the Hamburger restaurant does not require reservations (and has incredibly fast service!) or, the marina mentioned above is just a short walk away and has plenty of options for a great dinner! Overall, I would highly recommend this resort, and hope to return in future!!
