I booked this holiday last minute and was unsure on what to expect but after our long flight I was pleasantly surprised! All staff are lovely and very attentive! The pool and the bars are great, always music and games for entertainment. After reading reviews I was concerned about the seaweed on the beach but this was not a problem at all. The only thing we were disappointed in was the evening entertainment not much to do unless you want to watch the show. If you do visit this hotel then defiantly speak to one of the bell boys about doing the trip to Playa Del Carmen, there is a free taxi which takes you to a jewellery store which is lovely and all very affordable and then to a tequila tasting session in a shop full of tequila! You get 2 hours in the playa del Carmen town which is great seeing as your saving a lot of money on taxis, but take your band off or cover it because you get a lot of “workers” trying to approach you.
AC does not work in about a third of the rooms
over all it's an older property that has been somewhat updated. We would have giving this place a 4 if the AC would have worked. It had some charm, a really nice pool and a great beach, but after several sleepless night in 3 different Hot rooms, we were glad to get the heck out of there. We asked all of the guests we talked to if their AC Worked, about one third of them said NO. The staff moved us from our original room to a new room and then to another room, all three had AC units that were old and could not cool the room below about 80 degrees, we could not sleep at that temperature. We'd read other reviews stating the same problem, but our travel agent assured us that it would not be a problem. She was wrong, it was a big problem. Other than the AC we had no big complaints, but that was enough to ruin the trip for us, as we did not get much sleep.
This was my 3rd time visiting this wonderful place! And, as always, nothing disappointed me. The rooms and the beach are clean. The service is amazing and the animals that you'll meet are all friendly. I would like to give a special THANK YOU to the people who made our recent visit fantastic- Patricia (room service) José (doorman) Victoria (in the store) Fernando (serving drinks on the beach) And finally, Roger... (A great server in Parajito) Thank you to ALL THE STAFF at Catalonia Playa Maroma!!! And to my American friends- I assure you that you will enjoy your stay here. Just please.... Don't be rude. Cheers, all!🍻🍻🍻
I would like to start this by stating that the hotel does not look like the photos you see online. The hotel itself appears to be very large, however upon a proper walk through it is primarily made up of jungle. PLEASE be aware that this jungle space although beautiful, is full of mosquitos; I’ll give you an idea of how many...on day 2 we counted over 100 bites on myself alone. Also, no repellant works. Zilch. I would say to the hotel that a nice idea would be to provide a small bottle of repellant (that actually works) in the room as a gift for the guests, and then give guests the opportunity to purchase more at one of the shops (that don’t take cash, only card by the way.) If you do choose this hotel, be aware that there is little to no entertainment...the hotel is incredibly remote and it tended to rain...a lot ...during our trip and there was absolutely zero to do when it did rain...maybe a nice idea would be to utilise the large show room when it rains to show a film, gives everyone something to do perhaps considering there’s essentially only one bar. Also, don’t expect any drinks (soft or other) before 11am, even though they inform you that things open at 10am. The food in the buffet was good, very good, mostly at breakfast. The rest was just okay. A la cartes...the same goes as you can imagine for the majority of all inclusive hotels, the sit down meals are by and large...not great. The ‘steak’ restaurant is bad, don’t go for the “T-bone”...the meat is grey....the Japanese was actually okay...however we both got ill after eating here. Also, bloved was just bizarre...like... what was that restaurant supposed to be?! Worst of the worst has to be the “tapas” place (which isn’t tapas at all as you have to just order 1x normal size meal per person) Dont have the veal!! One of the worst meals I’ve ever had, the veal was covered in a yellow sauce that was incredibly sweet, and after much investigation we believe to be some sort of butterscotch custard?! Don’t bother upgrading, the rooms are essentially the same as standard and you don’t get any other perks, there’s no upgrade on drinks and the “special area” on the beach is not policed so is used by all guests regardless of upgrade. Waste of money. We actually got so many bites and got so under the weather that we took an executive decision to book an earlier flight and go back to Gatwick (taking into consideration we booked a package holiday and had to pay extra to change our flights.) We’re only saying this so that if you’re like us and do your research, you may think twice and think if this is the place for you.
no expectation at Catalonia
the beach is very nice, there was a lot of sergase the first days with a little smell, but the water clear itself and the staff took care of the weeds on the beach. The staff is very friendly especially those at the lobby bar. We has excellent service. There was a lot of mosquitos. Was terrible, we knew who was new because they had no mosquitos bite mark on the at the pool, Usualy mosquitos do not bother me but this time I had to buy Off mosquitos repelant to be safe on the resort after 5 pm. It is boring during the evening.if you like shows you will be serve but after the show it is dodo time. No 24 hour alcool service and no 24 hour food service.
