Kanaloa at Kona 2104 - NO AIR CONDITIONING!!!
When you book this unit you will only learn that there is NO AIr Conditioning available AFTER you pay the non-refundable price. We did not realize this until we arrived and looked for a way to cool things down and called the owner who explained where she identifies this in the payment confirmation as a no-cost for AC line item. Other than the lack of AC, the unit is fine. There is no bar soap for showers. Bring your own.
The resort needed some maintenance, the pool was missing tiles and lights were broken, boards were missing, the pool gates did not close tight. The condo we rented had broken cabinet doors, the TV did not work, and it was generally run down. The biggest problem was the extra charge for air conditioning. During rental, they mentioned air conditioning on request but failed to tell you that meant for an extra $30 plus tax per night. The cleaning charge of $315 for a one week stay was excessive. The outdoor kitchen was dirty and the screen doors fell off the tracks every time they were used. The place was unbearable hot and we spent most our time on the lanai, if it had a bed I would have slept out there. This resort is run down, with no amenities except a pool with broken tiles. They continue to charge premium prices for outdated, rundown condos. The stairs were narrow with carpet that was a tripping hazard.
A good place close to Kona
We had only 4d left on Big Island and didn‘t want to be too close to the city and also not too far away. So we chose Kanaloa as we also wanted an apartment. Location: very nicely located at the Shore. No real beach but some pools within the property. A smaller shopping center is very close. If you want more, Kona about 15 to 20 min by car, airport 30min. Be aware of some heavy traffic in the morning. Unit: we had a unit with ocean view. We loved it. It had two lanai but you use just the one facing the ocean. It was well equipped so we didn‘t miss anything. The basic condition of each unit depends on the owner. Some take care more some less. Price: we could choose between with AC or without. Ok, in a place like this AC should be no extra which costs you 20$ a day. You just need it because of the humidity. And 20$ extra a day is not a bargain. The overall price for our unit was, apart from this, ok. The pools: As far as I remember there are 4 pools within the property. so you‘ll find one not far away. They are not too much frequented, so we always found a deck chair. The beach: The beach is too rocky, so it‘s just good for watching the waves. There are 2 smaller Beach Parks not far away, but in our eyes not really nice. If you want to cool off, just use the pools. Cleanliness: The property was very clean. Only, as we came into our unit we still could find traces of toothpaste in the bathroom sink. And in the kitchen there were still crumps in some places. This (and the additional costs for AC) keeps me from giving 5 stars. Apart from this we liked the place and will pretty sure come back again.
Thoroughly Enjoyed 3504! Spacious 1BR with Nice Relaxing Views
My wife and I had a great 9 day stay at the end of May! Well maintained and stocked unit. We have fond memories of enjoyable mornings and evenings on the Lanai hearing the surf come in. Also recommend walking the short coastline trail at sunrise or sunset. Comfortable bed and furniture.
Nice location and area, but it depends on your unit
We had 2 families so we rented 2 2-bedroom units. First of all, this is a property that is basically all condo rentals (with about 5 families living in their units full time). So you need to know going in that even if you see a picture on the website, it may not be the one you get when you arrive. And if you book through a third-party -- good luck. I would book directly if I had to do it again. Because we booked through a third-party, we paid in full for 2 condos. However, when we got there, there had been a misunderstanding and there was only 1 condo available (even tho I had paid in full for 2). The front desk staff was very accommodating and was able to find us a place on property. So, the first night, we had an ocean front room and it was beautiful. After that we were moved to a fairway view. It was nice. The A/C worked (tho it took a while to cool the entire place). Our friends were in another condo (2-bedroom loft) and they did not enjoy theirs as much (as it stayed hotter) and was not as updated as ours was. All in all, we enjoyed our stay because it was nice to have a kitchen and the space. Also, it was in a great location. We could travel easily north or south and even across the island and back during the day. This was a last-minute booking that we were able to book 2-weeks before our trip, so we were happy to be there. We would still consider staying again. Again, while it was a bit of mixup, the staff does try. Pointers: Definitely rent a car, you may need to use your provided beach towels as bath towels, bring detergent, only some rooms have toiletries provided, no sand beach on site, ocean pool closes early, no fancy water slides or kid splash on property (but hey, go snorkel up the road -- and enjoy Hawaii!!).
