Viva la Mexico!
The staff was awesome and very helpful. The resort was kept looking clean and you can notice staff working hard. The entertainment was okay but realized it wasn't peak season. The place needs some upgrades as it's starting to show its age.
Can’t wait to go back!
Myself and my partner stayed at the Canto del sol in March for 11 nights and we can honestly say it is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. We have travelled extensively staying at many 4 and 5 star hotels all over the world. What stood out about the Canto del sol was the friendliest staff ever! Everyone made us feel so welcome. My partner loves to practice his Spanish and everyone was willing to take time out to teach him a little every day. The security guards always loved a chat and had so many interesting stories to tell . Jorge at the pool was the best, always rushing about but always had time to stop for a little chat before buzzing off again. All the waiters were so friendly and helpful, the maids were always laughing and waving,it didn’t matter that we couldn’t understand each other, their happy faces said it all. The reception were very helpful,we didn’t need to speak to them much which was a good sign. The restaurants were all great. The food very tasty. Yes,the Surf and Turf was probably the best but the buffet was very good as well. It was only closed for a couple of hours a day and always plenty of choice. We could always fill our flasks with fresh coffee. The Mexican was lovely but at the Italian I think we made the wrong choice, the lasagne was not nice at all. Great service again though. The entertainment was full on which we found pretty noisy but good fun to listen to if you weren’t joining in. The Mexicans at the weekend were what made the hotel we think. It made it all just feel so much more authentic, after all we were in Mexico! They are such happy, friendly and family oriented people,it was lovely to watch them with their old relatives and young grandchildren all having their family time. Loud, yes, but fun, yes. We mainly went for the whale watching and we weren’t disappointed. We saw a mother and her baby breaching in the bay for a good 15 minutes on the first morning. We could see them really well even without binoculars and it was just amazing,so incredible to experience. That was from the hotel terrace! We went on a boat trip and saw loads up very close, got the most amazing photos,it was fab. We actually saw them breaching every day of our holiday just from the beach. The walk to the Malecon took about half an hour. I absolutely loved it there. The atmosphere at anytime of the day was great but especially in the evening. It was electric but soooo busy, you couldn’t walk in a straight line ! Walking beside the river Cuale was just beautiful, the hippy markets, the walking bridge,Richard Burtons house, the stray cats the wildlife there was all just so interesting. The bronze statues all along the Malecon were just beautiful and walking along with a delicious ice cream watching the pelicans diving in the water to the modern pier through the streets and then along the beautiful beach was just what dreams are made of. Fab shops too. Not just gifts shops like you’d get everywhere else but fantastic art and craft shops full of authentic Mexican gifts. Lots of art galleries too and a very interesting Romantic area, very interesting to walk around! And everywhere, everyone is just so friendly and welcoming. We were fascinated to see the massive crocodiles in the marina, just feet away from us! Also if you walk to the marina which takes about 50 mins stop at the rivers along the way and you will see loads of crocodiles and beautiful birds. Just before you get to the Marina take a left turn and go to the locals fishing harbour, the iguanas there are just massive and so colourful,if you can’t see them on the ground look up and they are all dangling from the trees, amazing! The birds in the trees along the main road at dusk are also a sight to see and hear, the noise is deafening, literally hundreds of blackbirds nest in every tree along the roads. There are lots of vultures to see too. The walk long the main road is actually fascinating in both directions. The trucks and cars are all so cool just because they are so different from ours. You walk past where all the cruise ships dock and even a trip to Walmart is interesting although it is just a huge supermarket. I can’t believe I’ve written so much,I still have so much more to say but better stop soon,I’ll bet no one is reading this now anyway! Well done if you have kept with me! We never got to go on any trips because our days were just so full as it was . We wanted to see the blue footed boobies and the hidden beach. We wanted to go up into the Sierra Madre mountains. Wewanted to see the humming birds at the botanical gardens. We wanted to go to where they filmed The Night of the Iguana. We wanted to go on a tequila tour. There is just so much to see and do in Peurto Vallerta. It’s a place like nowhere else I have ever been. A beautiful, authentic Mexican city with beach and whales ,so much culture and the friendliest people we have ever met. We need to see this place again so much that we have just booked for 2 weeks in March. We have never been to the same place twice but we’ve nowhere near finished exploring beautiful Peurto Vallerta and we’re counting down our sleeps already ! The only one negative thing I have to say about this place is that maybe the rooms need updating but they were clean and spacious and the bed was huge and comfortable and we really didn’t spend any time in them. So it wasn’t a problem at all. Can’t wait to go back😊
Great hotel - don't believe the negative reviews.
We stayed at this hotel for 13 nights in November 19 and had a great time. The check-in at the hotel was quicka nd painless despite a whole coach load of us arriving at once. We were quickly shown to our room and the porter showed us round the room facilites and how to operate the room safe. The room was cleaned daily and towels changed if left on the bathroom floor (usual practice). Restaurants are excellent. Four A La Cartes ( Surf n Turf, Italian, Mexican and Japanese) plus main Buffet and a couple of pool/snack bars. Food quality is excellent in all of them - never had a bad meal in any of them. A La Cartes are booked at Guest Services located behind the main hotel Lobby Bar area. Staff here are brilliant - really friendly and helpful. Restaurant staff are excellent and there are too many to mention individually but a few to mention are Diego, Alesandra, Sergio, Pilar. For bars there a few situated around the hotel and all serve top brand spirits and Dos Equis draft beer so all was good. Cocktails were very strong. Animation team work hard all day and night. The poolside area had various activities on but not too 'in your face' so you can sit back and relax or get involved - up to you. It was nice that the poolside music was not too loud as well - often a big problem in some hotels where animation teams seem to think we all like music blasted out at stupid volumes. The night time entertainment leaves a lot to be desired and we gave up going to see it. Not our 'cup of tea'. The much publicised 'Mexican Fiesta' night was an embarrasment and needs a total rethink. Holding the entertainment over in the tennis court area is a bad idea as well - too far away from the bars and pool/beach and too warm being in such an enclosed area. The beach area is quite small but we never failed to get beds there when we went - though it was usually before 8.30am. There are lots of vendors there selling various goods. These guys work really hard day after day and often for only one or two sales a day. Give them time - have a chat - they are lovely hard working people and some of their wares are really good. We loved this hotel and its location - being just a short taxi ride ( or bus ride) from the Malecon where there are loads of shops/bars/restaurants. Well worth seeing. Nearby there are also quite a few shops/bars/restaurants and it is quite safe to go out and about. Overall - had a brilliant time at a lovely hotel. We would defibnitely go back. Some guests at this hotel we met have been coming back here for years and years so it must be doing something right.
Don't want to go home!
We have had the best time at Canto Del Sol! Before coming here we saw the recent few negative reviews and we didn't know what to expect. Having stayed for just under two weeks, we have loved every minute and would definitely recommend! The food was great, yes it was better at the reserved restaurants compared to the buffet, but that is expected. And the buffet still had plenty of choice, in particular breakfast was great at the buffet, especially the omelettes! The Surf and Turf restaurant was great like everyone has said, however our favourite was the Italian! The restaurant was really cute and the food was so tasty. And the Japanese restaurant was lovely, this was a hidden gem we did not expect! Never stuck for choice with the 7 restaurants on site. The beach was fine. Not sure why people have been complaining that it is so rocky, yes their are rocks, but easily walked around! We stayed around the pool area, as there was such a good atmosphere with the music and pool games. And the entertainment team were great! The best part of this hotel. Are the staff!! Carlos at the snack bar, is hilarious, he is constantly so busy and rushed off his feet, but still finds time to crack a joke! And Jorge around the pool, could not to do enough for you.. I don't think their was any point I didn't have a drink in my hand when he was their! My only negatives are the rooms are slightly dated and could do with a lick of paint, but they were always so clean! And they need to get rid of the seperate entertainment stage and move it closer to the beach and bar area so you don't feel like your too much at the theatre. A fantastic stay, and I would definitely recommend! Also, perfect location. We were right in the middle, only a short taxi journey to the Malecon and Marina!
Canto Del Sol Hotel
Just have returned from a 10 day break at the Canto Del Sol. We had a great time. Our room was dated, but spotlessly clean with a huge shower and separate vanity section outside of the bathroom which was great. The safe was free, and there were plenty of mirrors in the room, including a magnifying mirror. Everything did feel a bit "damp" but this was only due to the humidy and not damp in the room. The air con was good. The balcony was tiny, but we didnt use ours apart from drying bathing suits. There was a small washing line, which again was a bonus. We didnt spent a lot of time at the hotel and really just used it as our base for exploring. The time we spent around the pool was fine, there were plenty of sunbeds and not the ususal 5am reserving with towels. The weekends were busy with mexican families enjoying the pool, but it really wasnt too bad. We only heard lots of noise on 2 of the nights we stayed, and on 1 of those nights it was a wedding so that it was understandable. I think the noise probably sounded worse than it was as the corridors echoed everything. The drinks were excellent on the all inclusive basis, in fact the best we have had on an all inclusive basis. The drinks were branded, such as Jack Daniels, Jim Beam and Malibu. The drinks were served in plastic cups around the pool, but were not those horrible chewed ones you get at some hotels. The food was ok, but we fond ourselves struggling a little for variety towards the end of the holiday. No tummy upsets though, as everything seemed well cooked. We went to the speciality dinners as part of our package. Everybody raved about the food at the speciality dinners, but I honestly didnt rate them that highly. They were nice as a change from the main buffet though. Overall we have no complaints about our stay at the Canto Del Sol. It was well placed for exploring, it was clean, the staff were all very friendly, and we didnt go hungry. Nearly everyone we met during our stay were return guests which is always encouraging. We would use it as a base again if we returned to Puerto Vallarta.
