A good value hotel with excellent staff
Just returned from an enjoyable two week stay at the Canto del Sol, and the hotel has more good points than bad. I'll start with the negatives: The hotel is a bit dated and ready for a refurb, and the rooms are quite basic with no fridge and the shower area leaves a lot to be desired. The food in the buffet restaurant is rather bland, and seems to be the same thing on offer every day. A lot of the food is lukewarm, and while there is usually something to eat it's not particularly enjoyable. It can get very busy from midday Friday to midday Sunday when many Mexicans come for the weekend. It often meant a queue for the buffet restaurant, but you can't blame them for making the most of their short break. The beach was a big disappointment, very small and stony with only a few sunbeds on it mostly in shade. The sea isn't easy to get into without sea shoes because of all the stones, but it's pleasantly warm if you do make the effort. Now the positives: Even though it is dated, the hotel is kept spotlessly clean in all areas. There is always someone mopping the floors even around the pool area. The free Wifi throughout the entire hotel is a big bonus, easy to connect and fast and reliable wherever you are. The pool areas are pleasant with plenty of sunbeds and a pool towel service. The main pool always has something going on and there is a quieter pool plus a kid's activity pool near the tennis courts. The food at both poolside snack bars and the three a la carte restaurants is excellent, good quality with plenty of tempting options on the menus. The snack bar at the main pool serves from noon until midnight, so there is always food available. You are issued 7 a la carte vouchers for a two week stay, and three for a one week. They are well worth using, give them all a try. The drinks on offer are very good - two beers (light and dark), a range of spirits both local and branded, and an extensive cocktail menu. The pool bar opens from 10am until midnight, and the lobby bar from 12 noon until 1am. It never takes long to get a drink. The hotel is well situated midway between the Marina in one direction and the Malecon in the other. Taxis are cheap and both places can be easily accessed by the local buses which run every two minutes, and only cost 10 pesos per journey. The biggest plus at the Canto del Sol is the staff. All of them work hard, are very friendly and can't do enough for you. They go out of their way to make your holiday special whether you tip them or not. A special mention to Jorge who serves drinks around the main pool sunbeds and Milton in the lobby bar. They made sure our glass was never empty! If you've booked to come here, bear in mind the price you've paid. It offers really good value for money, and we met many nice people and had a great time.
The site is very good especially for people using a wheelchair. However the sun beds by the pools have a metal frame and care must be taken in adjusting the backrest. When lowering to the flat position several cases of fingers/hands being caught between the frames causing severe injuries have occurred. Also Mexican law restricts smoking or vaping on hotel premises. Safety deposit boxes are free and in the room. Al la carte restaurants are good, but the buffet restaurant often does not have basic items eg chicken breast, chops, chips. All staff are very helpful and courteous and willing to help.
Not 5 star but excellent service and value
Stayed in plenty of hotels in this area, this is one of the more dated ones, rooms are a decent size but very basic, food options are limited compared to others but decent enough quality. Drink options and bar/waiting service is excellent and the swim up bar is plenty of fun. All the staff I came across where excellent and the shows from the entertainment team where decent, I’d be unsure of staying here again, but it was fun and in terms of price you can’t beat the value for money this place offers, and location wise it’s great for the beach or if you want to explore the city
Went here in may with my girlfriend and is by far one of the best holidays we've had. Obviously there's a few things that could be improved like the room wasn't amazing and the food got a tad repetitive but none of that takes away from what an amazing place this is. The staff are excellent and can't do enough to help you. The food quality was brilliant even if it was a bit repetitive. The weather was unreal didn't see a cloud in the sky in a two week stay. Everyone on the staff from the waiters to the activities team are friendly and incredibly welcoming made you feel at home. 100% would come back.
Viva El Canto, Viva El Mexico !!!
We Booked the Canto through TUI, having stayed at the RIU Vallarta last October. That’s further up the coast & it’s quite secluded. So we decided to stay in the heart of the city at the Canto Del Sol. I knew after checking it out on tripadvisor that it was a older hotel, that was set on a small beach. I knew the sea would be quite rough, as it was further up the coast. So we knew it wouldn’t be are ideal sea & beach holiday. After a long flight, we moved through customs & baggage quite swiftly. Then it was a short coach ride to the hotel. Check in at the hotel was swift & we soon headed for are room & all though a little dated, it had obviously just been renovated. It had a modern combo safe, iron, plus board, a hair dryer & a flat screen tv, but unfortunately no fridge, which is a must in a very warm country. If it’s 30c in the day, then it’s about the same at night. And it’s always warm come rain or shine, but global warming winds will effect the Mexican weather, just as it is every country in the world. Anyway back to the hotel, this is the cleanest complex I’ve ever stayed in. They are constantly cleaning & that includes mopping the pool areas for excess water. Then there’s the service, that is second to none. The owners should be proud of there management & there work force. There are just a few tweaks that are needed in the Canto. One is the night time shows should start at 21.30, as is the norm in most hotels in this part of the world. 20.30 is to early & lots of people are eating around this time. So the shows didn’t always get the support that they deserved & the guest didn’t always get to see them. The second tweak, would be the food on offer in the main restaurant. Over 80 percent of the guest are the Latino & apart from breakfast, the food on offer was mainly for them. It had nothing to do with the chefs as the food in the specialty restaurants, especially the surf & turf was five star. As was there staff Capitan Diego, Adrian, Sergio & Oscar. As were the manager & the staff in the restaurant & the snack bar. You get 7 tickets for these restaurants if you stay a fortnight or 3 if you stay a week. You must go to them, especially the surf & turf as the food & service is five star. You can book all your nights in one go at most times of the day, depending how busy the hotel is. You go to the small reception behind the lobby bar to do this. Kevin, Tony, Jasmin & Antonia will look after your every need. The same at the main reception, Were they will soon sort out any questions or problems that you may have. The weekends are very busy, as lots of well to do locals stay for the weekend. As we where leaving, they opened one of the speciality restaurants for breakfast, to ease the strain on people queuing at the main restaurant, this seemed to help a lot at breakfast time. Puerto plata is a city, but it’s well spread out & there are plenty of shops & areas of interest to walk, bus, or taxi to, if you want a change from the pool area. Don’t be alarmed if you see armed units of police or army, as it’s quite normal in this part of the world. It’s perfectly safe to walk to most areas in the day, just remember a drunk tourist is open prey in any city in the world. You will be hard pushed to meet more pleasant & friendly people than the Mexicans are & we've been to both tourist sides of Mexico. If you get the chance to go to Mexico, grab it with both hands, you won’t be let down. I’ll be back !!!
