Wish I Could've Died Here
My partner and I spent two weeks at Bolongo for our honeymoon. We got the all inclusive option (I would strongly recommend--unlimited drinks, appetizer and dessert option at every meal) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since we stayed for at least 5 nights, the Heavenly Days Sunset Sail cruise was included. This consisted of an evening boat ride (around 2 hours) with unlimited alcohol and light snacks (hummus, fruit, veggies, and pita chips). We did this the second night we were there, and it was a great way to start off our vacation. The following days were spent relaxing, with no agenda, simply doing whatever we wanted without following a schedule. Most of the time, my husband stayed at the bar, while I tanned by the pool or ocean. At one point I got out of my comfort zone and tried paddle boarding, which I would highly recommend. On the rare occasion that we did have plans, went went on other Heavenly Days cruises. One of these is a "half day" (it's only a few hours) of snorkeling with turtles and seeing a shipwreck. Later in the week we did a third cruise called Sunday Funday (10:00 am--4:00 pm), which consisted of the same snorkeling excursion with turtles, but also a trip to Honeymoon Island. Both were fun, but if I knew the snorkeling portion of Sunday Funday were the same as snorkeling with turtles, I would've just opted for Sunday Funday and saved us a total of $150.00 ($75.00/person). The Heavenly Days cruises were not included in the all inclusive package, but each trip was $75.00/person. If we had stayed less than 5 nights, the Sunset Sail would've been $65.00/person. I would highly recommend these. The staff is friendly, entertaining, and they genuinely seem to enjoy what they're doing. They always keep your glass full, and want their passengers to have a memorable time. If you like wildlife, be prepared to encounter wild iguanas. Some people think they are tame, but in fact they're wild animals. Do not touch them and do not feed them. There are other lizards, but they're much smaller, and do not tend to get in the way of guests. I loved observing the iguanas, but other people did not. The room itself was nice. It wasn't what I was expecting, but you're not going to spend much time there anyway. The shower, though small, is clean and has pretty tiling. In the room we were in, the WiFi didn't reach, so we had to use data the whole time. There is only one sink, and the bathroom gets extremely hot since there's no vent, and the window only has a screen and glass panel things that don't close all the way. My husband thinks that because of this, a few bugs got in our room, but we dealt with it. While on the island, be prepare to get attacked by bugs and leave with plenty of bites. Bring plenty of bug spray and a bottle of Benadryl (bug spray isn't sold at the gift shop, and Benadryl is only sold in 2 pills/pack). Iggie's has great food, especially their grilled ham and cheese, and seafood pasta. Since we were there two weeks, I tried all of their mixed drinks, but the Thin Mint Cookie was by far the best. The waitstaff is immensely sweet and hospitable, but meals are on island time, so be prepared to wait and be patient. The staff I'd recommend are T'koya, Suzan, Boadicea, Meuris, Elisa, Selena, and Lorie. Take time to make conversation with waiters and waitresses and get to know them. They have a lot of useful information to share regarding the island and what to do. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. The only reason I'm giving it a 4/5 would be because of the bugs, which aren't the resort's fault.
Great staff, but poor accommodations
I hate to write a poor review, but I wish we had known the condition of this resort when we booked our "all-inclusive" 7 day stay. The restaurant staff and front desk staff were wonderful and friendly, as were the crew of Heavenly Days. But, the room was dirty, the bed was hard and concave (we literally rolled to the middle). There is only one restaurant open with a very limited menu if you plan to eat 3 meals a day for 7 days. The beach had lots of seaweed and it was never raked or cleaned at the beginning of each day as you would expect. There were paddle boards, kayaks, and water tricycles, but there were no organized beach activities, games, exercise, etc. Also no gym or spa. I understand that much of the island is still recovering from the 2 hurricanes, but this was hugely disappointing especially for the price.
Good but not excellent!
Alright, I’m going to be extremely honest and thorough. We went on our honeymoon and had a great time. Could the room have been cleaner? Yes. Could the room have been nicer? Yes. Did we get tired of eating at Iggie’s? Yes. Haha! We ate at Mim’s right down the beach one night but get ready to drop some $$$. Iggie’s is good but gets old after eating there every day and can be a little pricey. Also, honey, they are on ISLAND time. Don’t expect amazing service. We had some great waitresses and waiters and also some of the WORST service I have ever had! Seriously. We waited forever to be seated or for our food, went 40 minutes with no drink refills, had to go to the bar for refills, etc. The food is good though! In particular, we loved the fish tacos, steak, pulled pork sandwich, and popcorn shrimp. The pool is nice and open round the clock. Live music is great! All inclusive is a little pricey unless you can justify the money, we couldn’t so we didn’t buy it. Our room was beach front on the ground floor. From the back door to the sand was maybe 10-15 feet. Shower is tiny! Don’t expect to be having any company in there haha! They replace towels every day if you want. Change bedding every three days although I’m not sure that ours got changed. Air conditioner is surprisingly nice! We liked it. We went scuba diving at St. Thomas Dive club right by the old destroyed Iggie’s by Bolongo. The catamaran tours are nice! Go to buck island if you can and do the shipwreck/turtle dive or snorkel. Worth it! There is a gift shop on site and it has sunscreen, gas station food, souvenirs, etc. I will say that Bolongo is sort of secluded so there aren’t as many people there but you have to take a taxi everywhere if you want to venture out. Or you could just rent a car during your stay. Trying to think of anything else...decent watersports and things right there on the beach for kids or people who want to be in the water. The beach isn’t The Maldives. It’s beautiful but there is seaweed, it’s a bit rocky, etc.
My husband and I had not had a vacation in such a long time without the kids. I am very happy that we chose Bolongo Bay. We did the all inclusive plan and were not disappointed. The drinks were great and the food was AMAZING!! I am a total foodie and left each meal completely satisfied, lol! All the staff were very nice, friendly and helpful. The only issue my husband has was that we got an ocean view room and our room was at the end and did not have a perfect view. But in the grand scheme of things, I feel that was a minute detail. I had a great time in paradise. Thanks!
Our stay at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort could not, in fact, have been any more amazing. Keith the front desk manager and all of the staff there were so accommodating and made us feel so welcomed and relaxed!! We will absolutely be back! I would recommend this place to anyone, the staff really made it an unforgettable trip!
