    Family Vacation

Our family of four spent 7 nights at BlueBay Grand Esmeralda the first week of June 2019. We’ve vacationed in Mexico 4 times including this trip. We enjoyed our stay and had an overall positive experience. I will start with the positives. 1. Our rooms were the cleanest and nicest we’ve had in all our trips to Mexico so far. The only all-inclusive resort rooms nicer in our experience were at Sandals, which is much more expensive and adults only. Room service was good, mini fridges restocked daily, and towel art was left most days to the liking of my wife. 2. Food was good for the most part. Having traveled to Mexico multiple times you learn that most resorts serve basically very similar selections with only slight variations in presentation, choices, and quality. So when I say the food was good, I mean that hot foods were served hot, cold foods kept cold, serving utensils and food areas kept clean, good variety of local cuisine mixed with domestic choices, options for buffets or sit down style restaurants, attentive and service oriented servers/wait staff. Generally these marks were reached at most meals we ate on property in both the buffet and restaurants. There was a nice overlap in schedules of snack bars, buffets, and restaurants so you always had somewhere to eat. When it comes to our family, as long as they have chicken fajitas available, we will never go hungry in Mexico! 3. We had a very positive experience with our main concierge, Gabriel Sanchez. He was the most friendly, sincere, and helpful staff member we had all week. He helped us with booking a couple day trips and any questions we had about BlueBay. He always asked us how things were going or if we needed anything each time we saw him or passed by on our way to our rooms. One of the nicest and hardest working people we’ve met on our Mexico vacations. Thanks Gabriel Sanchez! 4. We loved the abundance of wildlife on property. There were lots of coatis, deer, birds and agouti and a few iguanas. Most tourists were respectful of the animals but of course you always have those few who let or encourage their kids to harass them. But the animals were fun to observe and makes your stay feel more exotic and tropical. 5. Resort grounds were kept very clean and beautiful. There were many tropical flowers blooming while we were there which was a bonus. The resort was generally very quiet outside of the evening shows or a couple hours during pool activities. 6. Everything on the resort was within easy walking distance for us (age ranges 14-44 in full disclosure). They do offer a tram service that I believe runs about every 15-20 minutes or so but we prefer to walk off the extra calories and enjoy the sights and sounds. 7. Drinks I would rate slightly above average in our experience at other Mexico all-inclusives. Most were good, some were excellent, and some awful. But... if you don’t like it, you can just order something else. The Black n White bar seemed to have the best drinks more consistently. Now for the negatives (likely what you are worried about most😉): 1. SEAWEED!!! Now before you write this resort off already, keep in mind that this is a major problem affecting basically most all Mexican resorts presently and not unique to this one. The seaweed issue has been ongoing for the past few years and doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. The weed is known as sargassum weed and it is a brown thick smelly mess. It was ashore with waves then starts to break down leaving a foul sulfur or rotten egg smell anywhere near the beach. 1b. Because of the sargassum weed in the after and along the shore, the beach is basically unusable. ☹️ This is the biggest drawback for our family. We love traveling to the ocean and spending most all day there swimming, snorkeling, and laying on the beach under a palapa listening to the waves and the smell of salt water. No such luck this time. We tried and after 5 minutes the smell made us nauseous. It also distracts from the esthetic look of a tropical paradise. Oh well... 2. Pools were of adequate size and layout, but had some issues. First, there are some portions of the pool that have small square tiles with fairly sharp edges. If you are not careful or move to quickly against them you can end up with small cuts. This happened to us a couple times until we realized to be cautious. Some areas of the pools didn’t have the tiled bottom and walls and were fine. Second, there is no swim up bar if that’s an issue for you. 2b. Also a major issue while we were there was that there wasn’t enough pool lounge chairs for everyone. I doubt this was an issue in the past but given that nobody could use the beach, everyone was around the pools. Resort policy was that nobody could reserve their spots with towels or other items the night before. And yet, every morning we would get up early and find that most if not all loungers were already claimed. I get up pretty early most every morning there to enjoy bird watching on the grounds. I’m typically heading out 6am local time and still can’t get our family a decent spot that is close to pool and has even temporary shade. I contacted hotel staff about it but nothing changed. I’d say they are afraid to make anyone mad to help with return business especially given that the beach is unusable. There’s no way that all those “slightly” intoxicated resort guests are setting alarms, getting up before 6am, going out and reserving spots, then going back to bed. When these people roll out of their rooms after 8am, the look on their face tells you there’s no chance that happened. 😉 There could also be a lot more pergola style or other shade structures around the pools to help with the increased use due to beach issues. 3. Front desk staff left much to be desired. Only 1-2 people were even moderately friendly or helpful during our stay. A few of them did just enough but not with any sort of smile, caring, concern, or quality service. And a couple guys who worked the evening shift were downright rude and made us feel unwelcome to say the least. I honestly do not remember their names. I hope that it does not stem from political tensions. We are just everyday citizens like they are. We choose to go to Mexico for vacations because we enjoy the tropical experience, the local food, culture, and atmosphere. We have always treated all resort staff with respect and courtesy and feel the same should always be returned. We always make a point to go into the local communities to shop, eat, and experience local culture and history. I hope this was isolated and won’t continue or we may have to reconsider our options in the future. Overall we had a positive experience at this resort and would recommend it to others. Hopefully BlueBay will continue to improve is facility and services and become even more desirable to future guests. Thanks to all who served us with hospitality and smiles. Thanks for the memories.

    Disappointing

Our first allocated room at Blue Bay had water coming out of a/c unit - this we found was both dirty and dangerous. The room was kept ok, but the corridors are a disgrace with animal faeces trodden in them. Water in the shower was never ‘hot’. The 24 hour Black & white bar at BBGE comes complete with resident coatis who steal food and walk all across the tables which are then not cleaned - yuk! Plastic cups used are rinsed out and reused for next guest. They are never properly cleaned. The wildlife at Blue Bay (mainly Coatis) rule the resort. There are signs saying dont feed them yet many people do!! They are wild animals and carry germs yet they freely roam the resort including eating areas. Staff generally favour the Mexican and American guests and will serve them first. There are rules in place - see photos however , Yes, you can eat in the pool, drink in the pool, leave your dirty plates by the pool, dive into shallow water, play loud music from your own device. There is nobody monitoring the situation. Furthermore there is no life guard at any of the pools. We witnessed numerous guests cutting their feet on the broken tiles in the pools - so go armed with plasters and saline solution. The pool is not cleaned properly with build up of hairs around the railings. There is little chlorine used - we saw this put in twice in 2 weeks!!! Restaurants at Blue Bay Grand Esmerelda:- Food at a la carte - ok Buffet food - dodgy Drinks in restaurants are ok but drinks bar at main pool bar and beach swing bar are shocking - they will stir your cocktail with a spoon straight out of a tub of disinfectant!!! - this is true!! This resort is big and the main golf buggy is an adapted Ford Fiesta that has carriages attached to the rear of it. It gives out the most toxic fumes ever. - see photo - no luxury here!! Many of the guests we spoke to had members of their party who were sick. We had 2 out of our group who were ill, one of which was so violently ill that they couldn’t eat for 8 days!!! Tour operators should make travellers aware of this problem. This is all TRUE so please dont go with an open mind - change your booking and enjoy a holiday somewhere else in Mexico.

    Disappointed but lovely holiday nonetheless

We stayed at the blue bay grand Esmeralda at the start of July we had a lovely holiday but were disappointed that the holiday is not 4/ 5 star as advertised. The rooms were in need of updating and were tired looking. The bathroom had parts that were rusted. The balcony is small with only 2 chairs when there were 3 of us occupying the room. The hotel large/main pool area was very good although there are no parasols which is not good especially as we had a child with us. Lots of entertainment. The swing bar is lovely. Free kayaking was great. There is a seaweed problem currently but the hotel staff are doing all they can to deal with it. The smaller pool are was not nice and the restaurant at it had a big hole in the netting which didn’t look nice and not what you’d expect at a 4/5 star hotel. The toilets in the hotel restaurants and the pool were shabby and definitely not what you’d expect of a 4/5 star hotel. The hotel staff were fantastic during the day and couldn’t do enough for us, evening staff not as friendly and helpful. Entertainment was fantastic at night but badly let down by no air conditioning so it was often in tolerable to sit and watch the shows. The wildlife was lovely to see - raccoons, birds, lizards, iguanas. Shuttle bus to playa Del Carmen was really good would recommend going into playa Del Carmen. We also done the dolphin experience which was fantastic but beware the photographs they try to sell you cost a fortune! I’d say there are nicer hotels in Mexico so wouldn’t recommend this hotel.

    Vacation from hell

Wildlife is out of control, wild animals ie cats and raccoons should not be in a restaurant while your having dinner. A slop room should not be next to a room which caused us to have roaches in our room 3 out of 6 days we saw roaches.the beach was terrible seaweed was smelling and you couldn’t get into the water we paid money to go to another beach that didn’t have smelly seaweed and amazingly beautiful waters that we enjoyed.
