So glad we choose this hotel!

Don't let the bad reviews influence you. Stay here, you won't regret it. I was a little bit unsure after paying too much attention to some of the reviews that I found here, however I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel, and after spending 7 nights and days at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda, I can safely say: I would stay here again! Only a few negative points: - WiFi not entirely reliable, and non-existent in the room. Whenever we were in the bedroom we had no connection at all, and we had to go outside to the balcony to get some. This was not a big issue though, since the idea of our trip was to disconnect from it all. WiFi good in public areas, at its best near Reception. - Beach area not great, far from what you think the Caribbean coast would look like. This wasn't a problem either, just visit other beaches. There is a beautiful lagoon 20 minutes by foot away from the hotel, highly recommend to visit it. - Seafood restaurant forgettable, I got soggy scallops and my husband, who loves squid, hated the way it was prepared. But they were extremely busy that night, I am sure we were just unlucky. Now to the positives: - Great and varied breakfast. Excellent table service. - We loved all the restaurants, except the seafood one. Special mention to the Mexican and Oriental ones. - Housekeeping was superb, our room was spotless every single day. - Swimming pool areas, wow! there were several pools, lots of sunbeds, it was never a problem to find our own spaces, it wasn´t overcrowded at all. - Animation team, chapeau! lots of activities like kayak races, aquagym, ping-pong tournaments, dancing lessons, Spanish lessons, beach parties, bingo, you name it. - Great selection of cocktails and mocktails We both loved this place and we were so sad to leave! Please don't let the negative comments put you off this hotel!

    Good 2 weeks

Reception was hard work with forms to fill in and staff not really knowing what they were doing, environmental tax $18 before we got to the rooms. Rooms are nice and spacious and there is a safe, iron, coffee machine, and we got a basket of fruit and a bottle of wine which is a nice touch also there is a mini bar stocked up daily at no extra cost. Beds are comfortable and there are a section of pillows to choose from. One code per person for the WiFi comes with the room others can be purchased but it’s a bit hit and miss There are 4 bars to drink at which we tried on the first day, the swing bar is fun and there is a good selection of cocktails available and the black and white bar is open 24 hours. The Black and White bar would benefit from some comfortable seating as the plastic chairs quickly become uncomfortable. There are some nice walks through the well tended grounds or you can wait for the bus that’s goes around the site every 15 minutes The buffet restaurants are very good with varied selection with themed meals. Also there are other restaurants bookable with the concierge. The steak restaurant was excellent the Mexican very good the Oriental average the seafood was very good. Staff are very attentive in all restaurants and always hoping for a tip. The beach is terrible not much sand and loads of sea weed and rocks, there were a few guys trying to move the seaweed it but it was a loosing battle so don’t pay for a sea view as it’s not a nice one. Apparently there is a seaweed problem along the coast that has been causing problems for a few weeks. Also it looks like there has been a storm and a lot of the sand has been washed away I had an excellent massage in the spa, the relaxation area is perfect and the therapists no what they are doing at £95 for 80 minutes it’s not cheep but worth it. There are 2 pools, a large one near the beach where all the activities happen and a smaller one at the other side of the hotel, the big one has a kids pool but they are both quite shallow, the only thing missing are tables and chairs. A child had an accident in the pool of the potty kind and pool cleaners came round and sorted it out very quickly and chlorinated all the pool. The kids club was very good and they will take the little ones from 10am until 4pm At the weekend the hotel seemed to turn into a Mexican club 18 - 30 with people shouting and singing until 6 in the morning but thankfully they were gone by Sunday afternoon Unfortunately they were replaced by about 50 teens running up the corridor and knocking on doors until 3am. It is quite a noisy hotel and the walls are thin so bring ear plugs. Taxi’s are available from just outside reception and they will tell you exactly what the cost is before go but on the way back it’s worth bartering a little as you can get it cheeper. Also you will constantly be asked if you want drugs and shop keepers will say they work as a waiter at the hotel “don’t you remember me” as the no the hotels from the all inclusive wrist bands. There is good wheel chair access to all public areas and lifts to the rooms

Management does not care about pleasing the customer.

We were not told ahead of time that the restaurants required everyone over 18 to wear pants. We only brought dress shorts and were therefore relegated to the sub-par buffet all week. Even though we explained our predicament to management, they would not budge. As well, despite our asking for help raising the water temperature in the shower, it never got hot. Our shower door was broken. There was a sour gas smell in the hallway to our room. Had to hold our breath. The food overall was the worst out of all the all-inclusive resorts we've been at. However, the most disappointing part was the rigid attitude of the managers.

Mixed reviews - However the pool area is beautiful

Let’s start off with the amazing things... - Luis at the black & white is genuinely an amazing bartender, kept up with fun drinks, and making our week special!!! (It was a birthday when I travelled and he remembered in overheating a convo) ALL staff we encountered were an absolute delight and it made the “negatives” we had so much easier to deal with. - Food was delicious. No complaints whatsoever. Always a huge variety of things, and I am a finicky eater. My negatives. - upon check in (which is 3pm like always) we got to resort and we went to eat, came back to get room keys and such, and we got to our room and AC didn’t work. In June Mexico is insanely hot, and I know for a fact that part of a check list is to ensure the rooms AC is functional. So we called front desk and they didn’t send someone down for 2hrs and we had to wait in room. The man that came (again very friendly) tinkered and was in and out constantly. He left our door wide open and unattended while we went to get some dinner. So with having phones and cameras and such in our room it wasn’t ideal. Then 5 hours later had to move rooms. I understand to some this isn’t a big deal, but it’s something that could have been avoided and took some bantering with management to correct. - also the pressure for the “time sharing” thing was quite unfortunate. Countless times a day, we would be approached and it got to a point where we would avoid certain areas. - The Beach had a lot of algae and such that kept washing up because of the tide, we couldn’t even be at the beach because of signs so we spent all our days at the pool. All in all it was just small things that added up, but the amazing staff we had made those things tolerable! Thank you BlueBay!!!
