Very happy - already planning to return!
My husband and I visited BlueBay thanks to a last-minute deal from Sunwing vacations. We were very pleased with the overall experience. Of course there were a couple of hiccups, which I will get into. For context this is our second time in Puerto Plata,. The first time we stayed at the Iberostar Costa Dorada. The check-in process at this resort could be improved. We were thankful that we could check in early, however I felt like the front desk staff could be more welcoming and have provided us with more useful information that would’ve made our first few hours go more smoothly. Especially when we told them it was our first time at this resort. Instead of simply handing us a map they should have given us a very brief walk-through of the key points of interest, and where to find information - like the bulletin boards by the stage. In terms of the property, we found BlueBay to be charming. It is not a gargantuan resort, meaning everything is within a few minute walk of everything else. We were quite happy about that. We really liked the style of architecture, which is a lot more interesting than some of the apartment-style resort buildings that you can find in this area. The grounds were well-maintained. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. As per some reviews, the rooms and some buildings could use upgrades here and there but, generally, we were happy on this front. Also, there are mosquitoes - thanks to a forested area with a lagoon - so bring your bug spray and after bite. The food was one of the areas that was lacking - but this is not surprising at most sun destination resorts. One could always find decent-to-good (and, sometimes, really good) dishes at the buffet. In particular the omelet and pasta bars were always consistently good. I tended to choose local dishes - beans, rice, stews - and was generally happy. Except for the grill, the à la carte restaurants were mediocre-to-terrible. We were all pretty surprised at how terrible the seafood restaurant is, especially given that this is an island nation. If you are travelling in low season, expect the snack bar to change in size, quality and location. The full snack bar is actually pretty great – including some of the best fried chicken I’ve had in a long time. Desserts all-around were terrible (except for their brownies!) I stuck to (and loved!) all the fresh tropical fruit. Now onto the pools and bars. The fact that this is an adult-only resort is amazing. It’s great for meeting people and making new friends without the din of kids from every direction. The fact that there are three different pools means that if you would prefer being left alone, then you could easily make that happen. The beach is quite nice with loungers and Palapas and - of course - the 24 hour bar is located mere steps away. The ocean itself is free of rocks and largely free of seaweed, but is generally quite rough during the day. Their pools could really use some deep cleaning, and the pool bar definitely needs an upgrade. Alcohol at the bars - as to be expected - is low-quality. It was mind-blowing that their bars REGULARLY ran out of basic supplies like limes, mint, and mixers. With a couple of exceptions, I also found that bar service was usually below par, with the bartenders generally moving slowly. They were often impatient, and didn’t really understand the meaning of customer service. Service at the restaurants and the buffet tended to be much better. All that being said though, it is clear that most of the service staff at this resort work their really hard, for very long hours. And for this we were appreciative. Which is a perfect segue to my final point. The animation team and entertainers at this resort are truly spectacular. The shows were generally really fun, especially the Michael Jackson revue. The dance troupe is awesome! And the animators work their butts off. Waldo (one of my new favourite human beings!!), Julio and Veronica are all incredible. They do a great job of interacting with guests, making them feel welcome and encouraging them to have a great time. I cannot sing their praises enough. We (along with some of our new friends we met while staying there) will see you again next year, team BlueBay!
Thanks to customer service, empathy and quality of service I enjoyed a phenomenal birthday. Customer service made sure every detail was perfect. Food without waste, to the point. My surprise cake (applause, applause) delicious. What to say about the environment, colorful, clean and pleasant. Eager to come back one more time!
We had a great time and loved everything. The staff is kind and polite, they make you feel like you are at home. Food is very good, they have a lot of varíety. I loved my room on the first floor, it was always cleaned by my cleaning lady! Our favorite place was the beach, it’s a magic place, blue with white sand and a beautiful sun everyday.
Blue Bay Was Amazing!!
Blue Bay was such a great time! The staff were so friendly and halarious. Lots of activities. Veronica, Julio & Waldo honestly made our trip. So much energy. Food: fantastic & lots of variety. I liked that it wasn’t “westernized” but also for those not adventurous there are options Bar: GREAT!! Franklin, Pablo, Louis, Lorelie & all of the others were just so friendly. They always had us laughing Location: so perfect. Online it looks far to the ocean but it was literally 5 minutes from our room to the ocean!!!! Unreal!!!! Below is the photo of the bridge that brings us to the ocean!!!! (Again FIVE minutes) 10/10!!
First time Dominican Republic = excellent!
Mid-vacation. Early review as others may have questions. Great resort. Only 15-20 minutes from airport. Easy checkin at spacious and welcoming lobby. When the resort fills up it may be a bit crowded but for our arrival mid-afternoon no problem. Three story villas that make a quaint community. No villas face the beach. The beach (super, safe beach) is a quick walk through the lagoon. Plenty of loungers, sun cover however, we are here shoulder season and the staff indicates it gets very busy in high season. Rooms are good. We are 2nd floor with large balcony over looking pool. Lock box available for $3USD/day. Internet/wifi good reception through resort (can not get signal in room). Grounds are very well kept. Food: selection and quality is very good. Last night’s French onion soup and steak were superb. Staff: one word; amazing!
