Beautiful area. Nice long sandy beaches everyone is welcoming. I would definitely go back again. This was my first major trip and a great way to start off travelling. I recommend this place to anyone trying to either have a good time or just trying to get away and relax.

    Barcelo Maya Caribe

Hotel is amazing place. There is lots of activities u can do for example catamaran, scubadive, snorkel, jetski and hotel own guided programs, stretching, water polo etc. Stretching was my favourite start for the day and the instructor Kathya E. Hernandez was the best. She is super positve and happy all the time, 6/5 for her stretching lessons. :)

Review for anyone bringing kids who are celiac

Review for anyone who has kids who are celiac travelling to this resort. We stayed at the Caribe in the junior ocean front premium and my daughter is celiac and is 4 years old. P.S. when looking at the ingredient list there - "Trigo" is Spanish for gluten. But lots of things had listed Trigo & Gluten which was helpful. I brought our own letter in Spanish about gluten allergies (that I got off the internet) but they gave me a new one more specific to her at the premium check in. It had her name on it, room number, dates of our stay and then had information about her gluten allergy. She told us to give this to them at the restaurants and buffet. The first night we got there late so we ate at the buffet. I gave the letter to the hostess and she walked us through telling us what she could have and that the chefs could make her gluten free pasta but it would be about a 25 min wait. Which we did and the pasta was amazing! Penne pasta in a tomato sauce. I loved it and I'm not celiac! I actually preferred it to the others she had at the a la cartes. :) We ate at the Italian at the Caribe and at the Tropical and Tokyo at Caribe. Her options at the Italian restaurants were gluten free pasta, one had penne and the other was spaghetti. The penne was better than spaghetti but she was picky with both as they didn't taste the same as home ;). They also had gluten free bread for her (I think it was corn bread) and she loved it! They had gluten free desert options, one was fresh fruit and the other was panna cotta. She didn't like that last one, but at least there were options. And the waiters seemed very knowledgeable after I gave them the letter and told us what she could have. Tokyo was great, again I gave them the letter and the chef just cooked her stuff separately and had gluten free soy sauce for it which they also showed me. The lady who took our orders at the beginning was excellent telling me what she could and couldn't have. She had options for the salad, sushi, main course and desert. I was very impressed and she really enjoyed it! At the buffets for breakfast she would have eggs, bacon - although one day I saw they had bread lined in the bottom of the bacon pan! I think it was to absorb the grease. The first half of the trip they had mini yogurts which were gluten free but after that they disappeared and only had the big yogurts and yogurt drinks - all of which had gluten which was disappointing as she loves yogurt! Lots of fresh fruit and jello. Lunch at the buffets were limited - she lived off of guacamole, corn chips and fruit. I was nervous as the tongs often are on plates by the chips and one day there was a plate of seasoned bread beside it so you don't know if the tongs were used for both. But she never got sick so we were ok. The ice cream out of the soft serve machines were gf and so was the lime and tangerine sorbet at the buffets which was delicious! She loved those. We brought a ton of snacks with us, gf bread and peanut butter and I'm glad we did. She often had a peanut butter sandwich during the day and her snacks when she was hungry. :) And we needed to have lots of stuff to bring on the plane as we flew Sunwing and there wasn't many options. Overall we had a good experience as she never got sick and didn't starve! You just have to be prepared and bring lots of extras but we were impressed with how all of the staff handled it.

    Barcelo Caribe Buffet

My family and I just spent 10 days staying at the Barcelo Caribe. Every morning at breakfast we had Alberto Diaz and Joel Hernandez as servers. They were wonderful! And started our mornings off great and were always quick with their service. If you’re staying at the Barcelo go say hi, or better yet sit in their section and you won’t be disappointed.

I don’t understand the high rating of this resort

Our family of 8 just got back from vacation here. This wasn’t the best resort we stayed at, but wasn’t the worst either. Check-in seemed a bit disorganized. They didn’t provide a whole bunch of information. They lost my daughter’s departure immigration form and then acted as if I was lying about it. It was found in amongst their papers - no apology. They didn’t give us wifi codes. The bed for my daughter was not made up even though I asked repeatedly if it was. One of the keys didn’t work. And one fell apart in the first 12 hours. As premium guests we were not told about any of the extra benefits for that level. They never added our credit card to our file so that we could charge items to our room. Rooms: We stayed ocean view premium level. We had asked that our 3 rooms be in the same building. They were not even though there were available rooms in the building my parents and brother were in. The rooms were quite nice however some of the issues were: 1. We booked at the caribe but were staying at the beach, which made for an extra walk anytime there was an issue. There were several issues. 2. We didn’t received most of the benefits of the premium level ie: turn down service, welcome gifts, children’s gifts, swimming pool towels in room, bottle of tequila, we weren’t told about the hydrotherapy found out later on our own, VIP mini bar - if that was VIP I would hate to see the regular one. Food: the food was ok, I am not a picky eater but I sometimes found it difficult to find things to eat in the buffets. 1. I never bothered going to the pool buffet at the beach, I had quite a lot of difficulty finding things to eat there. 2. The larger buffets at caribe and beach had many more choices, however a lot of the food was not warm. The pasta and omelette stations were always good. 3. The service in the buffets was not that great, sometimes we ate meals without getting a drink or seeing a server. I would except with the amount of people at this resort and the amount they charge to stay there would be servers everywhere. 4. La Trattoria- service was excellent, food ok. The fresh pasta was good but the sauces were not noteworthy. 5. Mare Norstrum - service was excellent, food ok. 6. Kyoto - service excellent and the food was the best we ate all week. Our chef was incredible and I wish I could remember his name (started with an A) 7. The buffets were SOOOO noisy, I had a hard time being in them. Pools/beach - the pools were clean. The beach was beautiful. You could always find chairs. My only complaint would be the lack of servers at the pool. No one was around to take drink orders or clean up glasses, which left quite a mess at the end of the day but it was always clean by the morning. Bars - I am not a big drinker and I only had a couple of drinks a day and usually with dinner at the restaurants. However, on our third day there I had a mimosas and then ordered a second and then I blacked out. I have no recollection of anything after my second drink until I was vomiting in the room. My daughter said I had three drinks in total and could barely walk, I’m quite sure I was drugged - I have never blacked out in my life and I certainly wouldn’t be so drunk after 3 small drinks that I couldn’t walk. This made me so nervous about having drinks here that I only had wine if I saw it come out of the bottle. Extras: this was the part that I disliked the most. I seriously hate being nickeled and dimed. So many things here cost extra. $20 USD per person to go to a crappy kids water park with 4 little slides. $60 USD per person to go on zip lines and then portions of the adventure park were not even available. Extra charges for some restaurants. $20 for the smallest little ceramic to paint. The stores at the mall were quite expensive. The bowling was more that what we would pay at home. Be all inclusive if you are calling yourself all inclusive. If I was going to pay extra for everything, I would have went on a cruise and at least the food would have been good. I definitely will NOT be back to this resort. Thankful that the weather was beautiful and I got to spend great quality time with my family.
