Always a good time
It's our second time at the Barcelo Grand Faro and we have also stayed at their hotels in Playa del Carmen. It's always an enjoyable time. The property is well-kept and the staff is always friendly. The location on the beach and close to the airport is fantastic.
Nice place! But, not 5 star
Beautiful pools and beach, rooms were nice and some of the food was pretty good (dinner buffet is TERRIBLE, however). It was a very pleasant stay, but it is absolutely not 5 star. If you're looking for upscale luxury I'd pick somewhere else. But, overall it's clean and nicely equipped, most of the food is good and drinks were surprisingly good for an all-inclusive. We splurged for the premium level so we had access to the premium lounge which was consistently stocked with snacks and every beverage imaginable. They also have computer/printer access for premium guests. Overall, are the restaurants "gourmet" like the website boasts? No. Is it 5 star luxury? No. Is it a nice place? Yep!
Jorge - BEST server at the pool! He checked on us frequently & made special drinks for us to try. Great customer service from everyone, good hotel, and good food! Tips were not expected but well deserved. Felt very safe in Cabo! We will be back!
You will get sick!
I have never written a review before, but I think this resort and others thinking about going here should hear about my experience. I visited this resort last week and will never go back. Since returning home my boyfriend and I BOTH have had continued GI issues. After 6 days of pain, I finally visited my doctor who had to give me an antibiotic from whatever we had eaten/drank at Barcelo. We did not eat anywhere other than the resort and brushed our teeth with bottled water, etc. We were trying to be careful but still became infected. I suspect that the buffet (basically your only food option) gave us this infection. The food on the buffet is not hot which is a major health concern. If you eat food that is not at the proper temperature (hot food hot and cold food cold) there is bacteria growing on the food. This is rampant at Barcelo! Beyond the traveler's diarrhea, I still would never return to this resort. There is nothing wrong with the resort (other than the bacteria-ridden food), but there is nothing special about it either. The grounds are nice, they have 3 pools ("salt water" pool is fresh water), our room had a great view, but this place is nothing to "write home about." We stayed in a premium ocean front room (we were some of the highest paying customers at the resort) and we received turn down service ZERO out of 8 nights. I also had to call twice to get our room cleaned in the mornings (afternoon I returned to the room and it was still not clean). They came very promptly but I should not have had to call the get a maid. Upon checking into the room I also had to call to get a lightbulb changed in the bathroom and the service man came very quickly. So they are very responsive when you call but I shouldn't have to call. The "entertainment" at the resort was pathetic. For example, one night was the video dj- it was just a guy using a projector and playing YouTube videos. I enjoy bingo and when I asked if I could play the Mexican version without knowing Spanish, the activities director's response to me was "en espanol." So obviously there is a language barrier (she didn't understand my question) and I was not welcome to play the game. They had other activities at the activities pool but it was so loud over there we avoided the area. The premium upgrade is kind of worth it. It is nice to have the premium lounge because of the exclusive check-in, but don't eat the food, that really sits out all day and I avoided it. The only real advantage of it is being able to book reservations for the restaurants as many times as you want. The only place that the food is acceptable is in the restaurants, but even then I was given cold potatoes at the Italian restaurant. If you want to go to a great resort for around the same price range as this place go with the Excellence brand of resorts. They don't have a location in Cabo but I will never stay with anyone other than them after this experience.
Much To Appreciate Here but...
We have been coming to this hotel long before it was a Barcelo. There is so much here that is good. The staff are friendly, helpful, always pleasant and smiling. The location is perfect. The beach and crashing surf are beautiful (more about that later). The food at the buffets is quite acceptable. The fruit, cheese, meats and salads were always fresh. Service and food in the specialty restaurants La Gondola, Las Jicamas and Kyoto were above average. Food was well prepared and service was personal. The evening shows were very well done. We especially enjoyed A Night With The Tenors. Kudos to management for implementing a policy of not saving lounge chairs. All it took was posted signs and with few exceptions, guests complied. Gracias. Our room was very clean but Housekeeping services were not consistent. We had to call 3 or 4 times for towels and bath mats. The beach towels in the room were never replaced and we only had turn-down service 4 of the 7 nights we were there. Finally, during our stay we watched workmen erect a post and rope fence stretching across the beach in front of the hotel. What a way to ruin the beautiful view!.
