Not as impressed this time around
This was our second time at the Bahia Principe Luxury Bouganville, and our 6th time at the two side by side Bahia Principe La Romana resorts combined. The grounds are always meticulously maintained in both resorts, and the food is generally excellent at the Luxury Bouganville, but not so great at the La Romana side. If the food is important to you, pay the extra and go Bouganville. The lack of decent nightly entertainment this trip was disappointing, and the drinks are inconsistent to say the least. Sometimes you get an excellently prepared cocktail, but most times they are substandard. Some of the bartenders don't seem to care what they hand you. The pools are excellent, the a la cartes are great, but not easy to get reservations to. We had 7 allotted dinners, but were only able to get reservations for 4. Not a huge deal since the food at the buffet was generally very good. Staff is always super friendly, but the beach is getting worse each time we go. The water has always been cloudy because of the Rio Soco river that empties into the ocean nearby, but now the beach has jellyfish lurking in the murky water that you can't see until it's too late, A member of our group was stung, but thankfully not badly. Also a large 'lip' has now developed in the water by a constant rolling wave at the shoreline, and it makes it quite difficult to enter and exit the water, especially for older patrons who are not as athletic as they once were. A multi-knotted rope secured to a palm by the shore extending into the water would be helpful for swimmers to pull themselves out. The beach itself is beautiful with the large palm grove all along both resorts, but the quality of the ocean water, and these other issues I've mentioned above are unfortunate. There is now a 'Privilege club' that didn't exist last time we were there. Solicitors at the lobby attempting to sell you a membership into the club. This was one of the reasons we kept coming back to this resort, no time-share or privilege club pushers. Not any longer. The way the real estate for the Playa Nueva Romana development is offered is well done. If someone is interested in purchasing a condo, they approach the agents. No pushy salespeople trying to sell you real estate you cannot afford or want. Why isn't the membership into the privilege club done the same way? it's a big minus for us. It's almost as annoying as local hawkers on the beach selling things they've made and you're generally not interested in. Fortunately, there are none of those here. Yet. In conclusion, this may be our last visit to these resorts at La Romana as things that are important to us have deteriorated.

We survived for 7 days
our room should not be rated 5 stars as claimed to be. Daily plugged toilet was a challenge, broken furniture never got fixed. Beach area need cleaning. Actual beach seemed to have a muddy bottom. Check in time at reception was not respected. Wasted too much time in frustration.

A very nice stay at Bouganville, but with one or two issues.
Before we travelled on our holiday from 4-18/11/24, we were aware of the 'colour' of the ocean and distant view of the oil refinery offshore. This has nothing to do with the hotel, but because of the major rivers nearby feeding the Caribbean, the sea is far from clear, especially after heavy rain. There are also apparently jellyfish in the sea, with purple flags warning bathers, but we didn't see any. The beach itself is fine; not the best by far, but it is smooth underfoot with beautiful palms all along the shore. There are also plenty of sunloungers on/near the beach and the sunsets are very nice indeed. We arrived at the family hotel, and a golf buggy then took us to the adults only Bouganville (which was much nicer). The lobby is beautiful and the reception staff are very efficient and welcoming. A good piece of advice is to check in online before you leave home, and book all your speciality restaurant dinner reservations a week before you leave. We even booked our excursions in advance with the hotel and it worked well. Good job because the TUI rep is very seldom seen in Bouganville. After arrival and room allocation, we were personally shown to our room (a very nice touch). We booked an Oceanfront room, which in hindsight was not worth the extra cost. It overlooked the activity pool before a partial view of the ocean through the trees. This was a little noisy in the afternoons on our balcony. The pool front rooms near the quiet pool were much quieter. The room itself was very nice indeed, with a large bathroom, twin sinks, shower and spa batch, canopy bed and balcony. The hallways were also very clean, well decorated and very well kept. The gardens throughout the hotel were absolutely beautiful. A real credit to the gardening staff and the hotel. The paths to the pools, lobby, bars and restaurants were also immaculate. There are 3 pools at Bouganville; an activity pool near the beach (with its own pool bar), a cool spa pool, near the beach with its own bar and a quiet pool at the front of the hotel (near the breakfast restaurant) with its own pool bar. There is also a beach bar. We stayed around this area for most of our time as we liked the area. Note. There are 7 umbrellas and about 15 cabanas around this pool. These go very quickly, so you need to get up very early to reserve them, especially those in the sun first thing, and I mean early.....6am or earlier! During our stay, the hotel started a mini poolside buffet cart around lunchtime, with ice lollies, fruit and snacks. This was a lovely touch, but you had to be fairly quick as the cart ran out quite quickly. Now, a note of thanks to 4 members of bar staff: Namely Pedro, Marion, Bryan, Naelij and Celeste. They were really friendly and brilliant. The restaurants were all good and the staff excellent. The breakfasts in Las Dalias were lovely...we even had champagne in the morning! The buffet restaurant was very good for both lunch and dinner and all the speciality restaurants were nice, although our favourites were Don Pablo and Takara. The entertainment was rather low key to our normal holidays, but still very nice. Please allow me to say the saxophonist in Palmira was superb. Maybe a pianist/singer could be included in this lovely bar twice a week aswell to utilise the beautiful space more. The Tamarindo bar was also very nice with lovely chairs. This is where most of the 'shows' were held. Finally, if you go on any of the catamaran trips to Catalina or Soana Islands, please be aware that the boat to boat transfers from tender to catamaran and back are a touch risky for anyone not stable on their feet. Just be aware, but Soana Island is stunning!!! All in all, although we had a few heavy showers, we had a lovely time at this hotel, but please be aware of the sea state and in our opinion ask for a pool front room in the sun at the quiet pool if you prefer a quiet location.

Lovely, relaxing vacation
We had a lovely, relaxing stay at this beautiful resort in early November. The staff was amazing. We didn't like the location of the first room offered to us and they moved us to the building farther from the lobby, which was the newer part of the resort, and we enjoyed our stay there. The room was large and clean and we had plenty of hot water. The hairdryer was excellent. Lots of drinking water was provided as well as other bar items. The wait-staff in the restaurants were very well-trained. The food was excellent and there was always a good variety. We ate in Don Pablo, Takara and Rodizio and all were great. We especially loved the Jazmin Main Restaurant for lunch and dinner. The beach water, as described, wasn't crystal clear Caribbean water, but we knew that ahead of time. We didn't swim, but we did see several others do so. There's netting to keep the jellyfish out of the swimming area. It was always easy to find shaded lounge chairs at the beach and fairly easy at the jacuzzi-pool, but not at the quiet pool. All in all, we had a lovely vacation here and I would recommend it.

Enjoy and go with the flow
Arrived after very long flight, from gatwick with TUI had to wait 30minutes at check in as room 'not ready, NOT A GREAT START, food in buffet was a bit hit and miss, room very spacious but a damp smell on first few nights, staff are mostly great and friendly, especially poolside, and waiting staff. entertainment teams and gardeners seems to be working 24/7, never had a problem getting a sunbed or dinner table, nit too dressy either which suited us, if you want to chill out in this adults only hotel. Relaxing with a few drinks after dinner, go for it
