    Disaster

This place is a disaster. I don’t know how or when they got their 5 star rating, but it seems extremely generous calling this anything above a 3 star resort. Expectations are everything, and when we booked the hotel we expected it to be an amazing resort, and it did not meet our expectations. Food: The food options were limited and the quality seemed sub par. We really struggled finding food on the property that was edible and enjoyable. If crappy chicken fingers, hot dog and French fries are your thing, disregard this. Staff / service: I’ve traveled extensively throughout the Yucatán peninsula, and generally I’ve found the service in Mexico to be outstanding. The staff here generally seemed unpleasant, and unfriendly. Other issues: Our AC in our room went out on the 2nd day of our stay. It took the resort 6 hours to get a tech to our room to repair it. This normally wouldn’t be too big of an issue, but we were traveling with a 3 month old, and he had a really hard time trying to sleep with the humidity and heat. The rooms are also really old, and the place is in dire need of an update. Summary: I would avoid this place like the plague. We originally booked a 4 night stay at the resort. After 3 nights, we decided to just get up and leave. We didn’t want to waste any more time at this resort, and we wound up booking a room at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun (this place is amazing, and what a 5 star all-inclusive should be).

    A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

This resort has everything we could've asked for. We booked a bit last minute but it was so worth it. We were staying in a Junior Suite in the AO building, the rooms are a bit outdated but it was very clean which made the decor nicer! We had a jungle view at the back of the building, great for hanging your wet stuff because it is under the sun pretty much all day. The beds are great, we would've like a thicker/heavier bed cover but its ok we turned off the A/C at night. The mini bar was ok, we are not big users of mini bars! From check-in to check-out staff members and management teams were incredible! We had so much fun playing beach volley ball every day!! Entertainement staff members are just amazing, Erik was the funniest!!!! They all go above and beyond to entertain both pools family friendly and the adult only infinity pool! The shows: URBAN SHOW is crazyyyy!!!! we loved it so much we went twice! And of course we went to two silent disco which are my favorites!! The ocean: we are huge beach walker but going to Akumal we knew that the beach could be a bit rocky which it was, BRING WATER SHOES! The water was soooo warm an felt so good!! YOU CAN SNORKEL RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE INFINITY POOL on the adult only beach! We are big snorkeling fan and we could not believe all the fishes that are just right there! There is also a nice reef on the family side beach where you can see lots of fish, worth carrying your own kit if you have one! A LA CARTE DINNER (you have access to all 4 resorts for dinner which is probably around 20 restaurants all together. At Sian Ka'an its AO): MEDITERRANEO at Coba 10/10 : I have the fried fish and it was delicious, my husband got the octopus and it was also delicious FRUITOS DEL MAR at Akumal 6/10: it was good but we would have expect a little more from a seafood restaurant ALUX at Sian Ka'an 8/10: INCREDIBLE FOOD, the welcoming drink was delicious and all the food was so fresh and very good. Portion are a big small but its usually what it is at a la carte dinner MAIKO at Sian Ka'an 9/10: the only place i left with a fully belly, our waitress was awesome, as it was getting late she let us order a bit more food at the end of our dinner! MIKADO at Coba 10/10: the typical japonese restaurant with your chef that cooks in front of you, i have never eaten a fried rice that delicious!!!! Good portion also!!! Our chef was amazing!!! The main buffet is 10/10 for all services, breakfast, lunch and dinner. So many choses I wish we would have save more nights to go there and try different food. The food at the AO buffet was a bit the same each day but it was ok! The pool restaurant TIKALITO was awesome for a quick snack, amazing fish nuggets, great sushi selection and more!!! Overall we just want to go back to try more restaurant and see more shows! We are so grateful for this amazing vacation we just had at this resort! Stephanie & Elie

Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal Experience - April 2024

Overall, our recent stay in Room 8021 at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal presented a mixed experience. Extra attention to detail would improve the customer's journey, as guests should feel taken care of while on vacation without needing to report every need. Some may not provide feedback due to the relaxed nature of vacations. Substantial fee increases for requesting a new room should be addressed for future improvements. Health-related concerns stemming from food control challenges prompted dietary restrictions and prolonged symptoms, highlighting the need for improved buffet quality control. We recommend assigning additional staff at the buffet stations to monitor quality control and prevent cross-contamination, while also ensuring prompt replenishment of food and serving utensils. Addressing inconsistencies in service, such as staff responsiveness, is essential to enhance the guest experience and uphold proper behavior within the establishment. Neglected landscaping, and mixed standards in our area. Despite these challenges, our overall journey remained pleasant, reflecting the resort's commitment to guest satisfaction.

Absolutely LOVED this place, Amazing Resort!!

Well what can I say other than we’ve had an amazing 10 day trip to this resort. The family room we were allocated was okay, a little dated but for the time we spent in there it really didn’t matter. In any event, the room was cleaned daily with fresh towels which is what mattered the most. The staff are so friendly right from reception staff to the cleaners and entertainment staff. The entertainment staff worked endlessly and was engaging every night. There was often a band playing outside in addition to a different show every night. There are also plenty of other activities to do during the day including bike rides, tennis courts and booked excursions to name a few. The food was exceptional and this is coming from someone that is quite picky. Staying at Akumul meant that we could eat out at a different restaurant every night spread across each of the sister resorts. I would strongly recommend you download the app and make reservations before flying out. Getting to each resort was quick, fast and fun on the carts. In any event, the buffet restaurants also had plenty on offer. The cocktails were plentiful with a wide variety. The swimming pools were big enough and I was pleased to see there were no sunbed wars at silly hours of the morning. The beach on the resort was also not short of sunbeds. The only downside was arriving in Cancun on a Saturday. The airport was carnage with luggage thrown on various belts, but other than that there really was nothing else of concern. As a family we like to travel to new destinations and experience new places but I can safely say we will be returning back to Bahía Princple Luxury Akumul again!! We were quite sad to leave!

LOVED this place and would definitely return

This place is AWESOME. We are normally frequent flyers of a different resort group, but we decided to take our chances on the Bahia Principe and we were not disappointed. ROOMS: We stayed in a recently renovated swim out room. Our understanding is that the swim out rooms and other higher end rooms are renovated, but others are not and are a little dated. Our room was beautiful, the bathroom was well laid out, and the swim out pool area was gorgeous. Our only issue with our particular swim out was that due to the surrounding buildings and foliage, it didn't see much sun so it was a bit cold. The housekeeping staff was wonderful and were really on top of cleaning our room. We would leave for breakfast and by the time we came back, the room was already clean. Nicely stocked mini bar, and if you asked the staff stocking it nicely, they would give you extra of the items you liked and not put in anything you didn't! The beds were very comfortable and the AC was some of the best I've ever experienced in a room in Mexico. CLEANLINESS: This might be the cleanest place we've ever stayed in, period. Everywhere you looked, someone was cleaning something. My husband joked that he saw someone pop out of the bushes after cleaning them, haha. Even the bathrooms near the pool and beach were clean. The groundskeepers were equally fantastic and everything looked top notch. SERVICE: Some of the friendliest and most helpful staff I've ever encountered. The front desk staff was great. Every staff member you walk past smiles and says hello. We had an issue with our room key (which is your bracelet so you don't need to carry a separate key, very convenient) and couldn't get into our room to get ready for dinner, and we knew we would be late for our reservation. A staff member came in a golf cart, let us in, and when I explained the situation, he came back and picked us up in a golf cart and drove us to our dinner reservation so we would make it on time. At the end of our trip I was trying to pick up pottery I painted and the booth was closed for some reason. I had lost all hope of getting my item when I said something to the bellman at the front entrance. He told me to hold on, and within five minutes he was back with my pottery! I couldn't believe it! RESTAURANTS: If you stay at either the Luxury Akumal or the Luxury Sian Ka'an, you have access to all of the a la carte restaurants on the property and can eat in one every night, as well as access to a smaller buffet breakfast near the adults only pool (if you don't have kids with you). The buffet at both locations was actually really good. We loved almost every restaurant we tried and particularly liked Dolce Vita at Luxury Akumal as well as Don Pablo at the Grand Tulum and Alux at Luxury Sian Ka’an. We were only disappointed by the food served at the beach “food trucks” and just chose to eat in a buffet for lunch instead (food isn’t that great and the wait at lunch time is very long), and the Maiko Japanese restaurant at Luxury Sian Ka’an. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RESERVATIONS: Make sure you join My Bahia Principe (the free loyalty rewards program) when you book your stay. You can use the app 10 days before your stay to log on and make your reservations for a la carte restaurants. Don’t wait too long to make reservations, as certain restaurants book up really fast and there aren’t many options at prime locations and times day of. BEACH: The beach here is one of my favorites in Mexico, and I’ve been to a lot of spots (including the famed Maroma Beach). They have breaks offshore that stop a lot of the huge waves from coming in, but it’s not so closed off that you end up with stagnant water. Mexico is hit or miss. Our first few days the water was glass, but then the winds changed and it got a bit choppy. Even when it’s choppy, there are some sheltered coves that are still really nice. The beach is also very long and great for walks. Great snorkeling in the middle near the Grand Tulum. Check out the area near the big dock, lots of fish congregate there. POOLS: Large, and had plenty of seating around them. If you want peace and quiet, stay near the adults only infinity pool. If you’d like a little music and fun, check out the main pool. My only complaint with the adults only pool and the main pool is that there was no swim up bar in either, except off in a different section of the main pool that required you to get out of the water and get back in. If you want a busy party pool, check out the main pool at the Grand Tulum. Our favorite spot to sit was between the main pool at the Grand Tulum and the steps down to the beach; there was a secluded area just steps from the pool but on beach sand and shaded with palm trees. USE OF OTHER RESORTS: The best part of staying here is your ability to use all of the facilities at all of the other resorts on this property. We never got bored because we went somewhere different every day. There are many shuttles available all over the whole property that will take you to the beach, other lobbies on the property, and across the street where the Luxury Sian Ka’an is located. There is also a great little shopping plaza towards the entrance of the resort. Our only minor complaint is that the property layout as a whole is a little confusing, and the maps aren’t great. The app map would be great, but the Wi-Fi is not stellar so it won’t always load.
