Vacation with family
Very nice resort. Staff very friendly and efficient. My room was cleaned before noon each day and the maid was excellent. Pool area and beach were both great. Lots of local guests and it was very busy given that it was Easter so if you are looking for a quieter trip don’t go during a local holiday. Also the bar fridge was not stocked but room service was very fast when ordering drinks. Lots of activities for the kids and the bike ride through a park was very nice. Food was ok and the Costa Azul restaurant was excellent.
Nice resort, to many kids, to many locals
Azul Ixtapa Canadian traveler We love Ixtapa. We have vacated there several times. Best beaches. From - March 28-April 4, 2019. I have broken down my review in sections so that you can read as applicable. Oh boy was it busy, the tail end of their school break, locals came in on the Friday and left Sunday. It was unfortunately the worst 3 days of our vacation. We stood in line for 20 minutes or longer for the restaurants with locals budding in to get seated. And at the bars locals would run up to someone in line and order dozens of drinks to take back to the pool. Very disrespectful. Many times there was only 1 bartender working. The hotel should have staffed the bars accordingly so that you were not left standing for long periods of time. Guests are guests no matter what country they arrived from. Let’s ALL be treated the same. Azul Ixtapa is a great hotel. Very clean. We were in room 1905 our maid Asgncidn was the best and made sure we were happy every time, with turn down nightly service and a candy kiss on our pillow. Rooms – every room has an ocean view. Clean and spacious. Elevator – Only 1 was working. Very unpleasant NO AIR CONDITIONING in the elevator and we were packed in cause we only had the one. At times I was scared due to the amount of people that would load in. At one point took over the indicator panel and when the elevator opened on a floor I spoke “sorry full”/”lo siento lleno” and pushed the button closed. Restaurants – 3 Al-a-Cartes – plus you can eat your breakfast at the Oyster Bar every morning, avoiding the line ups at the buffet restaurants. And who does not want to avoid this and be able to enjoy your morning at the water’s edge. Just ask when you book your al-a-cartes. The staff were very accommodating. Mexican Restaurant – the WORST place to get seated – up to 25 minutes. The food was cold and un-edible. Locals all eat here. Colours Restaurant – seated in minutes, as the locals did not like this restaurant. Food was good, variety, and a great location overlooking the pool and ocean. Italian Restaurant – good food. There is a make as you wait past bar. Mediterranean – did not eat there as vacationers were telling us to avoid it. Snack bar at the pool – cold, bland, and if you like to share from the food station with kids and their fingers, then enjoy. Parents and staff did nothing to keep the kids from eating directly out of the french fry, and hot dog containers. One child actually took a bite of a hot dog and put it back in the food station for someone else to enjoy. Yukkkkk. Oyster Bar – THE BEST place to eat. Breakfast every morning avoiding the buffet line ups. Order off the menu and eat from the small but plentifully buffet. Most guests do not know you can eat your breakfast there every morning as it is not consider part of your al-a-cartes. The staff – Humberto you’re a very thoughtful person and were very attentive to ALL the guest needs. We can’t wait to see you next year. Hugs to my new friend. All of the restaurants should have a better selection of food for kids. Hot Dogs and fries are not every kids favorite. Many of the people we met with kids commented on this. Some ideas – Mac & Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Chicken nuggets, Spaghetti. Cold cereal and milk should be out at every meal not just breakfast. A marked kids section would be great. Including kid approved deserts – jello, ice cream, cookies. Pools – 4 sections, swim-up bar, and a kids water park area (that was not used by kids) Very clean, plenty of chairs, life guards and security. Easy access to the ocean with life guards. There is NO ADULT area. It would make sense that the section of the pool where the swim up bar is should be designated for ADULTS only. Kids of all ages sat at the swim up bar and were severed a drink (juice, soda) with adults and there bad language and alcoholic beverages. What’s wrong with this picture. Azul management should make this section with signage ADULTS ONLY. This would also allow the adults to sit on the pool deck, away from children and their splashing. So, from the bar to the walk over bridge would make sense. Music – pool area – VERY VERY loud. You could not enjoy conversation. Maybe have sections speaker’d off so that not all areas are the same level. Bars – swim up bar and 2 walk up bars in pool area. Lobby bar always busy and under staffed. Azul bar staff always ready to get you drinks around the pool and in the lobby section. But it took a long time to get your order as the bar in under staffed. Security/Life Guards – Security does a great job in making sure that all guests were safe. This type of security is appreciated. Maybe a security person could monitor the NEW adult pool section if this is implemented. The life guards were on it if anyone was in an unsafe area of the ocean or playing inappropriately in the pool. One thing I noticed is that male adults were asked to remove any t-shirts that they may have worn into the pool and were some children (age 8+) the sun was very hot and for the children the t-shirts were UVA shirts. Not sure why…… Front desk/concierge – very friendly, helpful staff Room Service – accurate, prompt. Food was hot and tasty. Currency – the Canadian dollar is the currency of choice. Exchange rate – 13.50. No longer is the US dollar is excepted everywhere. Donald Trump is to thank for that. Sunwing hosted a BIG BBQ party with entertainment – this was so fun… thank you Sunwing. There was a dinner show that both Azul Ixtapa & Azul Grand guests were invited to. Great food with a traditional Mexician show. – Loved it. Thank you Azul At the Azul dinner show this is where we meet friends from the flight down. They were staying at the Azual Grand – next door. We went over there the one day and WOW this place is amazing. Hardly any children and there were several adult areas to enjoy the pool. This place is hands down the place I will be next year.

We just returned & wanted to pass our option on to those considering this resort. BIGGEST PROBLEMS: If you’re going to stay here you need to be ok with: - Ok with having to wait 10 minutes with one elevator (other elevator was broken and there was zero attempt to fix it) - Ok with eating the same food every day - IF YOU HAVE A SWEET TOOTH, Come with your own treats - the dessert selection here is pathetic!!! - Ok with locals bombarding the resort with day passes, leaving you and maybe 20 other people who speak English, everyone else is local, leaving the pool and beach chairs areas packed. (The weekend specifically, everything was in Spanish, no “American style” music, food or activities. The resort became COMPLETELY focused on the locals and not the international guests) - Ok with walking long distances and up hills, as this resort is built on a hill - No map or proper signage for the resort, we didn’t even know there was a show stage until 4 nights in as it was never advertised or posted anywhere KIDS Great resort for families, park and baby club was great with our kids, tho the baby club being closed from 1-2 is super inconvenient because that’s right at nap time, when you’d want them in there sleeping in the crib room. Had chase Marshall and Skye on day for the kids to take pictures with which was nice. The water park with the water slides was an incredible area, kids loved that! FOOD The food was our biggest issue and downside. It was ALL THE SAME EVERY DAMN DAY. Like extremely obvious that salads were being reused every day and just bland, not impressive food. (Reminded me of food in Cuba). There are 3 buffet restaurants but what’s the point of that when they all just serve the same food, no variety at all. Snack bar for lunch (burgers, fries, pizza etc) was good but really sick of that for 7 days straight. The cook staff was a real issue too, like the lunch snack bar would open and be out of fries in 2 minutes, and no one would make more.... like those of us with kids that have been up since 7am and haven’t ate since are starving by 12pm so have some food ready! You know you’ll be busy! Just so unorganized. And the breakfast, every morning the egg cook guy was no where to be found at 7:30am, no waffles being made, just so unorganized, I get it it’s early but some of us are up early and deserve good service too. ROOM we upgraded our room to a one bedroom suite and really glad we did, the room was really nice and kept clean and organized. Our room had a huge jet tub, shower and a sauna. Kids could be in the other room so that was super nice. Issues with the room included never getting our mini bar filled, ever! No beer, water, pop, nothing. And the shower didn’t get hot water, like not even close to hot water. The tub did, but not the shower. The location of our room wasn’t ideal tho, quite a walk to the pool/beach but it was very quiet. All in all, our kids had a freaking blast, it’s definitely a great resort if you haven’t done an all inclusive much and you’re not looking for anything “special”. The kids areas and programs were great but for us adults we definitely wouldn’t return. The food was a breaking point for us, we couldn’t wait to get home to actually eat good food again. If you’re coming to this resort pack snacks from home and bring your own cup, they don’t do straws here.
Nice resort but could use a few improvements
This is a difficult review to write. Overall we had a great vacation at this resort but there were a few things that were very difficult to deal with and this left us with a lot of disappointment. If it wasn’t for the friendliness and williness of most people that worked at the resort, it could be a completely different review. The location and scenic beauty of this hotel is at the top of the list for good things. Every room had an awesome ocean view. Although there was a used bar of soap on bathtub edge with a few hairs still attached to it upon our arrival, during our stay the room was cleaned perfectly each day with the usual wonderful towel art and flower petals. The beds were very typical and just OK and the pillows were awful (unless you like rock hard). However, we just accepted it and never did talk to front desk. The bathroom area needs a much brighter bulb/ more wattage. Although we were on 7th floor directly above lobby bar and could hear music, the sound of A/C fan would drown it out and make it no more than background noise and not enough to keep us up. The grounds were well maintained and the drink selection at the bars suited us well. We liked the pools and although some days we had a harder time finding lounge chairs, you could usually get one. They have large bins of the arm floatees for kids but be aware that if your child is under 4' they must wear some sort of floatation. The pools however were the perfect height for my kids and they loved them. Like most resorts, some lounge chairs were held early and the towels spent more time on them then people did. It was hard as well to get around lounge chairs. They are so close side by side to each other that you cannot get through and must walk around until you get a break. It would be nice as well to just have some plastic chairs available for those that want to sit and watch rather than lay down on lounge chair. The playground area in kids club was great. Nicely secluded and well shaded. We did a few kids activities but overall only used playground a few times to get out of sun. The climbing wall on far side of hotel was good but never tried some other activities like minigolf as they had an additional cost we were not willing to pay. It was a little slow getting towels each day as they all had individual numbers sewn on so they had to keep record every day of each towel you signed out and then you had to return the same towels. Never a shortage in our week. There were an adequate number of bars but things wrapped up pretty early at night. OK for those of us with smaller kids, but not so good for those that wanted to party. We never met a bartender or server that wasnt friendly. Didn’t see too many people that had way too many drinks either. That was a first. Daniel in the Lobby Bar was our favorite and could even predict what we were going to order. There was a lovely theatre that could be seen from many rooms but not one show was ever performed here. The evening shows were a longer walk up hill to an area between the Grand hotel side and this hotel. Too far with kids that were tired from spending all day at pool or beach. Leading towards the less good things was simply getting around. For a resort located on hill, they did a great job of splitting up levels so you never walked up too many stairs at any one time BUT getting from lobby to beach for example had a person walking much longer and looping back. They needed more paths where you could cut down to the next level. Going from buffet to beach had you walking away from beach before circling back up around pool. OK if you're just wandering but if you just needed to run back to room to get something, it could take a while. Then with only 1 out of 2 elevators working, it always was a wait. There was only one spot where you could take stairs down to access beach. The beach was OK but if you are a soft sand lover like us, it was not ideal. We had fun playing in waves. Perfect for long walks on a flat beach but difficult to play in or build anything. The main problem overall for us was food. We are family of 2 adults and 2 kids (11 and 8). Nobody enjoyed the food. The bigger problem was options for the 2 Celiacs. I loved the willingness of people we talked to try and help find gluten free options, but not even including the language barriers, they just don’t know anything about it. I had a gluten free card in Spanish explaining what was needed but they would hand it off to another person then that person would go ask and hand the card to another and there was basically few options. We talked to a few different areas ie the front desk had this info, tour operator had a "allergy" person that took our info, we used the gf card, but there still just wasn’t options. Our second day we finally found someone that could run next door to the Grand side of resort as they had GF pasta but the length of time to go there, cook it and then bring it back was 20 min and food was luke warm. By the 4 day there they finally advised us they brought the GF pasta to our side of hotel and they were always willing to add something to it like sauce, butter, peas, grilled chicken but all this was always specially prepared and my daughter did not want pasta at every meal. None of us wanted to sit and wait for 20-30 min while everyone around us was eating. Appreciated the effort beyond belief as we knew it was safe, but there was little info on anything in buffet. At most other resorts, the head chef comes out and can point out stuff that is safe and not safe. Here we had to ask if one dish was gf and the person could run back and check but it was always a guessing game. One time the guy comes back and informs me the chicken wings are safe as they are not breaded, only fried with oyster and soy sauce (both of these normally contain gluten). There just wasn’t that many options and not knowing if the rice or potato dishes were OK was frustrating. Al a cartes were better but still lacking knowledge about gf options. As one person in the family that can eat gluten, there still wasn’t a lot of options. They had 2-3 different buffet restaurants each night but each were small scale without much variety. They also rotated which ones were open which was confusing. The entire buffet line and amount of dishes would equal what other hotels had just for salad selections. We've been to large hotel chains and much smaller resorts and never had such a limited buffet. They had a small 2 door, 3 shelf plexiglass unit with all the desserts. You could get ice cream but had to ask for it. I normally love buffets as we can try foods that are new to us but there was just not a lot appealing. The dishes I tried were OK, but unhappy with overall selection. First vacation I think we lost weight. So overall, our vacation was good. We met some great people, got treated well by locals and workers at hotels, felt safe the entire time, loved the weather and scenic views from hotel but would likely not return and not recommend the hotel for others.

When we first visited the Azul Grand resort it was just a brand new building, about 4 yrs. ago. Just returned from a most relaxing and enjoyable vacation there (March 10th to the 24th.) Not much has changed. Still ultra modern, with top end service and first quality meals. Utilized the spa,it was wonderful, had a few excursions into Ixtapa and Zihautanejo. Sunwing seems to be the majority provider of all-inclusive bookings in Canada for this location. The Sunwing reps and Sunwing are doing a fabulous job of managing and maintaining the quality of expiriences available at this location.
