My family and I stayed here for a week on our first visit to Hawaii. This location was the perfect place: close to a beach, walking distance from tons of eating options/ shopping and only a short drive away from incredible hikes!
An nice, affordable hotel on Waikiki Beach
Our family had a nice stay for a week of touring, hiking and beach . The Aston was convenient and in the middle of all the beach, restaurant, and shopping areas. The pool & bar area a nice place to hang out. Our maids did a great job daily on our room, and the valet parking guys were very helpful and on the ball when we called, especially Bartz!! Our only disappointment was their inability to give us a late checkout time on our last day, after we were told it was a possibility. Anyway is was a reasonable beach option in a very expensive beach front area of Waikiki.
Lot's of Potential
Just got back from a week here. I stayed here a few years ago when the hotel had been beautifully decorated in a vintage Hawaiian style that was very colorful and modern. It was disappointing to see that everything had been painted beige. It looked like the hotel was trying to achieve what they thought was an upscale look, when in actuality now because it hasn't been completely redone, it's left with a mishmash look that's neither upscale or charming like the original vintage Hawaiian look. Also more shade and landscaping around the pool would go a long way. Virtually all of the hotel guests sought out the shady bits, leaving the exposed lounge chairs unused. Much could be done to improve the check in process to make it a bit more humane. How about a complimentary drink and a place to sit while you work it out on an iPad? I spent a lot of time imagining how this hotel could be improved! The maid service is very good and the staff working here is a nice group of people, but don't expect any information on Hawaiian activities or interests outside of the basic tourist brochures. Case in point - I had booked a group tour for the Doris Duke Shangri La House tour. You have to take a shuttle to the Honolulu Museum to get there and not one person had any idea of what I was talking about regarding either the tour or how to get the shuttle to the museum. Ironically there was a sign right in front of the hotel that had the museum name & logo indicating the bus stop! Overall this place needs work. The best thing about the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is the proximity to the great beach right across the street and the fact that it's on the end of the strip away from all the malls, giving it a more relaxed feel. I guess you are saving a bit when compared to other places right on the beach in Waikiki.
More umbrellas and planted trees around the pool please
This hotel is fine. Not expensive, so don't expect lux. The one thing I have to criticize, which can be easily dealt with, is that theres not enough shade around the pool. Not enough umbrellas, and no planted trees. How easy would it be to fix this?! The whole week I stayed here, I saw people clamoring for a shady spot around the pool, to no avail. I had no option but to sneak into other hotel pools that had some shade around them. Would have been nice if I could have stayed put at my own hotel and had a seat under an umbrella. That being said, everything else was decent. The view from our room was lovely, and the maid service was superior, they were really sweet, and on it, everyday. On another sad note: across the street at the beach, I witnessed a drowning, or near drowning the evening of Aug. 14th. It was horrifying, I can't stop thinking about it. Does anyone out there have any information about this sad episode? I asked everyone, including the lifeguard on duty the following day, no one has any info., and I can't find anything out on the net.
Great location :)
I live here in Honolulu, but as residents, we tend to take Waikiki for granted. It's so beautiful and this hotel is positioned right across from Kuhio Beach. You have a fairly calm area for the young ones or those that don't like waves crashing into their face, then just a few steps over you have an area for those that enjoy waves. Plus, you have "the wall" which is my son's favorite, he likes to jump off it and into the ocean. Our oceanfront room had a perfect view of everything mentioned above. Firm mattress, complimentary reusable water containers, which came in handy, and the staff if great here, all of them were very kind. A special thanks to Trisha who checked us in, and thank you again for the extra pillows :) sorry I didn't get to thank you again in person, but I'm almost certain we'll be back. We were celebrating my son's 11th birthday with a staycation and after this trip, my son is really missing our room at the Aston.
