My husband and I stayed at NOW Emerald last week. I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive after reading so many negative reviews. But upon arriving, I soon learned the "complaints" were very trivial. Our arrival to Cancun went without incident. We got to the airport and were instructed to walk straight and ignore anyone offering us a ride. This is very important. There are a lot of companies who aren't licensed by Mexico so it's important to read labels and get good information. The key is, do NOT make eye contact. We already had transportation arranged through our deal with Cheap Carribean. We were instructed to look for the Amstar representative. It was very chaotic, but all the reps were wearing bright blue shirts with flowers on them so they were very easy to find. TIP: Don't get suckered in to the "presentation" for "90 minutes." We were confronted by a woman who claimed to be a representative of the hotel. At first we thought she was going to help us get to where we were going but then it became clear she was trying to get us to sit through a presentation. We made the mistake of agreeing and sat through it the next day. It lasted 3 hours and we literally said "No" to 8 different people. We did get $200 and a nice breakfast...but so not worth it. Our transportation was easy to find and dropped us off at the front door of the resort. You will AGAIN be confronted by someone from VIP Services. Again, decline the offer for the presentation...unless you think the breakfast and $200 (basically cash) is worth it. Our room was not ready when we arrived, which was no big deal. We were able to hold our luggage at the front and explore the resort with drinks in hand. Note: If you or someone traveling with you has mobility issues, there are a LOT of stairs. All the resorts are built to mimic the Mayan ruins so they have that pyramid look. That means lots of levels and lots of stairs. We didn't mind at all. The bars do not open until 1100 am so keep that in mind. But if you have breakfast at Carnival, they will serve you mimosas or bloody marys. The beach was beautiful and clean and not crowded by any means. There were plenty of lounge chairs, cabana beds, and even hammocks for guests to use. Beware of peddlers walking up and down the beach selling various items. It goes all day long. Drinks and food can be served out on the beach too. When we finally asked if our room was ready at ~230 pm, it still wasn't ready but the front office staff offered a room with 2 Queen sized beds instead of 1 king sized bed. It didn't make a difference to us, so we took it. We were on the 9th floor and the view was incredible. The room itself was dated and needed a few upgrades. But we weren't there to hang out in the room. We had plenty of hot water (just let it run for a bit) and the bed was very comfortable. It was reasonably clean (And I have high standards) and basically exactly what we needed...a place to sleep. There was also a very interesting book in the room that explains everything about Mexico. The one thing that lacked in the room was a room service menu. I looked, but never found it. I'm sure that could be rectified with a simple call to the front desk. The staff in the hotel was beyond amazing. They really went out of their way to please us. Michael at the Adult Pool is a fantastic bartender and also very funny and entertaining. Girardo at Capers was exceptional. We ordered a bottle of wine and he brought out two additional dishes simply because they paired well with the wine we ordered. He was on point. Raphael at Tamarindo was also incredibly accommodating. The food everywhere was really very good and again, the service exceptional. Capers was our favorite restaurant. Many people complained about dress codes and odd hours of the restaurants. The front office staff gives guests an itinerary everyday for the next day and it lists what bars/restaurants are open and what their dress code is. We never had a problem. It also lists various activities throughout the day, i.e. beach volleyball, Spanish lessons, cocktail making classes, etc. The only con I can relay is that we woke up to hammering a couple times in the morning. Be advised, this resort was just bought out by NOW and they are undergoing constant renovations. It wasn't terrible, but not the nicest thing to wake up to. Also, there were complaints of water being on the floor. If you didn't know, Mexico is a tropical destination and it is also very humid. When the AC units are running and it's still humid, there is a LOT of condensation that has no where to go but the floor. The floors are marble, so be careful and pay attention where you are walking. There are people walking in and out all day after getting out of the pool and coming back from the beach. So there is a good chance there will be water on the floor. That being said, staff is constantly cleaning, so the water doesn't stay there for long. There was only one thing at the resort that had me concerned and that was the fact that glass was served around the pool. I feel like that's a huge liability if someone accidentally dropped their glass in the pool. Probably better to stick with plastic. Overall, a very nice enjoyable trip and we have already decided we would like to go back with another couple of friends.
Nice for price
So I went knowing it was an under new ownership deal and a deal it was. There were a few room issues to start and yes the property is a work in progress but the staff are amazing. When you visit make sure you visit Luis Moo at the bar and ask for a cheesecake shot! He was so wonderful. Jonathan at the Paramore was the best server and we can't state enough how great his service was. James with entertainment was so nice and you must attend his Spanish lessons and trivia!! The beach was steps away and the pools were amazing. I would like to visit again in the future to see what progress they make in upgrades! The staff shine and if you go expecting some new ownership bugs and not 5 star dining (expect Paramore) then you will have a relaxing and fun vacation!
Will not stay again
I was highly disappointed after having set high expectations based on my past experiences with AM Resorts. The food was poor quality, the facilities need updating, the lack of entertainment. The only good thing I can say is the customer service from some of the waitstaff and bartenders was great.
Dinner at Spice
Wonderful dinner tonight. Our food was great. It was the best on the resort. We were welcomed by Daioni who is one of the best hostesses. Our waiter Eddie gave us great recommendations and was very attentive. We were also helped by Jhon and our chef was Henry. The food was delicious and our dessert of Leche mousse and tempora ice cream topped off the evening.
We had a wonderful week.
Just back from a week at this resort and I loved it. I have stayed at several resorts in Mexico and the Dominican. I can’t understand so many of the negative reviews. It is a beautiful resort. Very clean. The food was great. The beds were so comfortable. The workers were wonderful. So friendly and helpful. Shout out to Rafael in The French and Capri restaurants. Miguel in the buffet. Efron in Sin Sin and Spice And Diddiers Spanish coffee in the lobby was delicious. Really everyone was so nice. There are a lot of steps and our group was older so that would be the only negative but we managed them and had a great time. Would be nice if there was an elevator to the beach but we did get our exercise. Lol. The ocean was beautiful. Very little seaweed the week we were there. I think they could use more covered seats on the beach but they are remodeling so maybe they will add them. Definitely will return for the right price.Just back from a week at this resort and I loved it. I have stayed at several resorts in Mexico and the Dominican.
