We had a great stay at the Hyatt---it's a beautiful, low density property with one of the best pools I've ever seen. There are maybe 6-7 food/beverage venues so you won't get bored with the resort food offerings. Location and waterfront setting were great. Easy access from San Juan and there were numerous off-resort attractions nearby.
Some Good, Some Needs Improvement
This is a nice resort for a relaxing get away. The rooms are large and comfortable. You are right on the water, which is nice. The F&B on-site is not excessively expensive. However, Hyatt still has more work to do to bring this property up to their standards. For example, the old concrete by the pool is painful to walk on in bare feet - it seems like they only replaced a few sections but really, they should re-pave the entire area. The Food Truck by the pool is a nice idea, but the food they serve from it is mostly not good. There was a nice Japanese style bath/shower room in the bathroom in our room, but the floor wasn't at the right pitch so it didn't drain correctly and flooded the bathroom everytime we used it. These aren't deal breakers, certainly, but things that Hyatt needs to improve.
Exotic & Family-Friendly Getaway at a Bargain Price!
I brought my family (parents, in-laws and kids 6yrs & 4yrs old) to the Hyatt Grand Reserve in February 2020. It was amazing - the adults had a relaxing & refreshing experience, and our kids never once complained about being bored! The staff went above and beyond, bringing a great attitude and level of service 100% of the time - from breakfast at the Waters Edge restaurant, to the pool / beach area, to family dinners at one of the great restaurants on the property. The staff at the kids club engaged our kids in numerous activities - a treasure hunt, water balloon fight, hermit crab races on the beach, movies in the beautiful conference center space (with a legit popcorn machine) - when you include a massive pool and numerous water sports, there is so much to do without leaving the property. In addition, I took my son to play tennis (on new tennis and pickle ball courts), and we played golf at the PGA tour quality golf course. In fact, the resort is hosting the PGA tour this weekend, and so not only did we play a round, but we were able to watch the pros practice for the tournament this weekend! The physical beauty of the property is also worth mentioning. Whether you sit in between the pool and the ocean, or take a walk down the beach, the property blends the feeling of a newly renovated beach resort, with a sense of being in a remote location where you really feel away from the hustle of dense urbanization where many of us live, and look to escape. This is not the typical Caribbean beach hotel where you are on a beach with a string of hotels up and down, with a sea of beach chairs and people in every direction. This experience is the exact opposite. You feel like you are away, but the resort has newly renovated infrastructure to provide everything you need. The GM mentioned that they are adding even more amenities in 2020, with Top Golf, a new sports bar concept, a new gym and spa, etc. etc. So, this place is going to be even better when I bring my family back next year! I have stayed at hotels in the Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica, and have never experienced value like this. I felt like the experience was in-line with hotels where I have paid $800-$1,000 per night, and the room rate is a fraction of that. The rooms compare favorably to other hotels in Puerto Rico that are charging $800+ per night over peak times. I found the food to be reasonably priced, based on my previous experience. In summary, I highly recommend you go and check it out. No need for a passport. Great weather in a beautiful setting, with a staff that operates with a great attitude, at a price point that I would put up against ANY resort in the Caribbean. You can't find better value than the Grand Reserve, period. Good luck in your future travels!!!
beautiful property but something off with service
Property is exceptional, but why were we asked by almost every staff person to write a review on trip advisor? I would’ve happily written about the service, but when they hand you a card with their name on it and then show you how to download the app, it seems very disingenuous. management shouldn’t be giving incentives for online reviews. It will backfire.
Gorgeous Property/Friendly Staff
We had a wonderful stay at this newly renovated property with gorgeous views! They are still renovating and adding features, but our room was exquisite! The beach is beautiful, and offers kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkling. They had just opened a new Italian restaurant (Trattoria) to complement the Puerto Rican, Asian, Steakhouse and Water's Edge restaurants so there was plenty to chose from and the food was excellent. The trattoria was a pleasant surprise as it opened 3 days before our arrival and the food was very authentic. The staff was super friendly and accommodating and the Concierge was able to arrange half day or full day excursions to nearby El Yunque and Old San Juan. Overall, we had a magnificent time and will be sure to return!
