This iconic hotel really grew on me after a slightly faulty start -
Booked thru luxury escapes back in November and upgraded to get a premium oceanfront room with fabulous 180 degree views right on the beachfront.. Great location and loved the market grill restaurant and bar on the ground floor. However - our expensive upgrade was to include nightly drinks and canapés at the top class voyager 47 club lounge - between 5 and 7 pm. Top notch this was not - yes the sunset was amazing but the bar staff did not seem to understand the difference between cocktails and mixer drinks. No cocktails . The canapés varied from dried out fried stuff to something reasonable. It seemed strange that the fab restaurant and full bar downstairs was not rated as highly as the Voyager 47 posh lounge ! Loved the relaxed feel of the hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful and everything was super clean. Our room however was quite dated and paper cups were the go ... Maybe that’s an American thing. No big deal, but surprising as the room price was top whack. Only one pool that was always filled with noisy teenagers but think it was school hols. Overall tho we grew very fond of this established quite famous hotel and were very very sorry to leave !
3rd stay - as great as before....
This really is the best hotel in Waikiki - perfect location right on the beach and the oceanfront views do exactly as they say....you can’t get closer to the ocean in any other hotel so that’s a massive tick first up. Whilst the rooms may not be to the splendour elsewhere, they retain a local charm that assures you that you are in Hawaii not some corporate hotel elsewhere. And the housekeeping service is exceptional with rooms always cleaned as you leave for breakfast and pretty much done by the time you are back. Rooms also a good size with more than adequate bathroom facilities. I would definitely recommend an oceanfront view and if not ocean view as worth the extra - ask for 9th/ 10th floor as well. We have stayed on two previous occasions and the addition of the Club Voyager package is a good addition. Whilst there’s plenty of nearby options for both breakfast and diner, we took the breakfast option one day - arrived quite late at around 9.30am and probably need to get there earlier to get it fresher. Diner looked like there was a fair few options and was popular most nights. We made best use of a couple of drinks every night post relaxing on the various beaches of Oahu and capped off the day before heading out to the nearby restaurants. One standout in the Voyager was the service and in particular Gina - a credit to the hotel and really did make us feel very welcome with plenty of conversation. Thank you Gina! We didn’t use the pool as prefer walking/ driving to other beaches - the beach outside is small but good or stretch your legs further up Waikiki. Finally - there’s lots of hit and miss comments on food here. Yes The Shorebird is a loss and it was iconic in Waikiki for both tourists and locals - and was always busy!! It was a bit sad to see so many empty seats in the bar and restaurant given how packed it was before. But the new Reef still retains the great views, old school Hawaiin charm and also there’s plenty of quality in both diner and breakfast - we ate each once. The buffet for both isn’t as generous as before - this is a hotel company with different margin targets than previous local ownership so not unsurprising - big its still good quality. The omelettes for breakfast were huge and whilst we didn’t have the BBQ option and went for cooked diner, I still like the point of difference of cook your own food. It’s very clear what you are getting when you read the menu so I don’t really see why people complain. A bit more fine tuning and perhaps a bit more local love and hopefully the food and beverage team start to really head in the right direction. Also the Club Voyager Discovery membership gets you you 20% off and 15% off at Hulas at the other Outrigger - this is very useful and a real benefit! Definitely upgrading pays for itself if you make use of it. Overall another fantastic stay at the Outrigger Reef - thank you for a great all round holiday and see you next time!
Nice Accommodation just needs brightening up.
This is our 5th family trip to this hotel the last being in 2014. I must say I was both excited and disappointed with the hotel. Excited because I still think its the best positioned hotel along the beach strip and of course happy hour. Disappointed because its really not given itself a face lift and you feel like your back in the 80's. The restaurants have gone downhill, The Reef Bar & Market Grill has lost its mojo the buffet breakfast dry and poor with the Kani Ka Pila Grille pool bar nice for the evening music but a poor menu really just snack food. What ever happened to the old Shore Bird and ocean house restaurants which are now closed as they gave the place some life. My suggestion just eat out. Another disappointed is the Hotel resort tax, they say it covers the Waikiki connection trolley as it main thing and tha's a big waste the trolley does nothing that you feet or the local bus can't do and they do it cheaper .Rooms are basic and need brightening up the same for the lobby.
This resort took our vacation to a new level... The best service we have ever had in all of our years of traveling. There are so many great dining options at the resort, nightly live music, ocean views, and any shopping you might need is within a block... Downtown is literally a block away. We did not ever need a vehicle. This will not be our last stay at this resort!
great, friendly, relaxing hotel
we had a partial ocean view and it also overlooked the pool and bar area which was great. nightly Hawaiian music at the pool bar, efficient waiters and great food help make it a perfect day. the hotel staff are very helpful and friendly, can,t do enough for you. if you get a room on the 8th floor you will find the best maid you,ll ever meet. Susana is a delight and makes your stay unforgettable.in my opinion it,s the only place to stay at Waikiki. it,s also right on the beach.
