Lovely worry free vacation
The resort is located on a lovely beach. (Mostly) Bungalows (some 4-plex) are spacious and well kept. There are a LOT of stairs and hills; not for those who have difficulty walking or require wheelchair access. There is a shuttle on the resort to get you from place to place but we had about 40 steps up to our bungalow from the street. Some had more. Staff are friendly and eager to please. Food and beverages were very good. A wide variety of activities available by day and evening entertainment. VERY quiet at night. Wildlife abounds; monkeys, iguanas, raccoons etc. We'd certainly go back.
Hard to keep this place a “Secret”
Where to begin? Secrets is everything and more. The layout of the complex provides enough space for privacy and retreat in your room while also being 3 min. from the beach, restaurants, and pool. Let’s start with the service and food/drinks - top notch. I have been to resorts that feel like you are constantly being sold to... The staff here was focused solely on providing a tailored and enjoyable experience. Luis Vallejos, our sommelier, knocked it out of the park our first night and dinner, then came to a separate restaurant the following night to ensure the bottle we selected was up to par. Pool drinks were refreshing. The variety of food options gave us a new and delicious experience every day. And being able to order food to the room with our tablet at any time of day was a real plus! The views are spectacular. Black sand beaches, extremely well maintained grounds, and round the clock activities that fit with any type of vacationer. (Would recommend the couples massage - nothing better than deep tissue with the sound of the ocean and trees to relax you even more.) For anyone considering Secrets or hesitant to pull the trigger on all-inclusive, I can’t stress enough how “worth it” this resort is. Amazing service, unforgettable views, and flowing piña coladas made this our best vacation yet. Many, many thanks to Eduardo Carrasco for reservation assistance and the recommendations!
Ideal location, setting and service!
The resort has a fantastic location overlooking the Papagayo Bay! The resort was about 100% occupancy and we still had more than enough room to enjoy ourselves at the restaurants, pools, beach. The food was amazing but what I really want to highlight is the service, the resort clearly invests in their staff to encourage a 5-star experience. Big shoutout to Luis Vallejos, the sommelier and his staff. He made all of our nights memorable and went above and beyond. Thank you Eduardo Carrasco for the suggestion and help in our reservation. We will definitely be back!
Best all-inclusive yet but be aware of certain features!
My husband and I had an amazing time at Secrets Papagayo. I would highly recommend upgrading to the preferred club- we did and truly believe we would not have had as good of a trip if we had not...The preferred club gives you access to the Sea Side grille for breakfast and lunch and it is served Ala carte. Mr.Husband and I would not have been pleased eating buffet food 2 times a day. I feel as though the resort would lose a star from us if we were not in the preferred club. We found it irritating that buffet closes between breakfast and lunch, so you may not be able to walk right in and snack. There is the barefoot grill which is good and will be open when the buffet closes. Overall, although choice is somewhat limited compared to other resorts, we found the food quality to be much, much higher. All the steaks that we had were incredible. The sides were not anything to write home about but the steaks made up for that. The Sea Side grille was our favorite restaurant by far. Amazing service from Johnny and Ana truly the top! Johnny truly made us feel like family. He made us feel like the most important couple there. We feel like we made a true friend in him. The Japanese which is the only restaurant we found to be sub-par although we may just have higher standards for Japanese food as we have been before. The preferred club also puts you in a better room location. We were directly off the main area with the pool, restaurants and coffee shop. (our favorite part of the entire stay). Coffee is outstanding in Costa Rica. If you are up further in the resort as it is very hilly and recessed into the mountain, to me it would have been irritating having to call a shuttle each time we wanted to go down to the pool or back up to our room- another great feature of the preferred club. Although the shuttles do come very quickly, still it is much more convenient to just walking right out into all of the action. Rooms are well appointed and bungalow style so you feel almost as if you have a private villa. The rooms only have a shower so if you like to take a bath, you will miss out. As for the culture of the resort, we found that it was an older crowd which is great if you enjoy chatting with the people around you and making friends. Mr.Husband and I are quiet people and were really just looking to stay to ourselves so this was fine to us, however if you are younger and looking for fun/party/lively I don't think this is the resort for you at all. The main pool gets a tad rowdy but only for maybe two hours max per day while they are doing the activities. The backside of the same pool is much more quiet however it does not have a shallow end. They offer a few activities daily although they do not do a great job of advertising them or timing them appropriately ( as in a black jack game at 7 pm--everyone is eating or getting ready to eat at 7!) We did not see any shows during our stay but we did watch a movie on the lawn. They stripped the Beach beds of the cushions for the movie and set up 6 metal chairs instead. I am nit-picking now but it was just a bit strange. I do feel like due to this being a smaller resort, 5 days is the perfect amount of time to stay, I don't know how people stay 7-14 days here. It is not big enough or with enough choices to stay longer than a week FOR US. We would be tired of eating and doing the same things. The beach will be disappointing to avid Caribbean travelers (if they are expecting powder white sand and clear water) as the dark sand stirs up the water so it is not clear or aqua blue. It is more of a bay so it is a bit calmer. There are vendors who can take you on boat rides or on a jet-ski so if that is your cup of tea- it is available. We are more "pool-people" so we were not bothered by the beach, but if you are beach people you may be left wanting something more. Drinks were excellent. Mr.Husband and I are not drinkers at all so we really cannot comment on the potency of the drinks. The drinks we did have were delicious and the bartenders taste each before serving which impressed us as they clearly care what they are serving. The service was also impeccable. Julio was probably the nicest staff member we have ever met at ANY resort. An absolute doll. He truly embodied anticipatory service. We always told him we were okay, didn't need anything and he always brought us treats anyway. He remembered we didn't drink alcohol and would bring us smoothies, coconuts and chips. Such a sweetheart. Overall, I believe it was an outstanding resort for the correct client. I personally would not peg this as a honeymoon destination. I feel like it caters more towards an older crowd and an older crowd will thoroughly enjoy it. My most important takeaway however is upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. If you are sold on this resort and it sounds as though it would fit your needs, upgrade to the preferred club! It will enhance your stay 10 fold. I've personally never seen much reason in upgrading in other resorts but here it truly does make a difference. You will get preferential everything and it will make your stay that much more special. Thank you Secrets Papagayo and Johnny, Julio and Ana for making our stay amazing.
Perfect is the only word that describes our vacation. Perfect from the time we arrived! We was a group of 17 and was a easy check in greeted with cold drinks and hustled to our room by shuttle the shuttle drivers are fun and entertaining and was always the within a couple minutes. Restaurants was delishes steakhouse was our favorite. The buffet was great for lunch on 2 days they brought us lunch poolside which was awesome. The wings were amazing! Ceviche was delishes also! The rooms were just beautiful we had a king and plenty of room beds were comfy showers hot and the robes was a perfect touch after a shower. The beach was beautiful with mountain and hills as its backdrop. There were people selling things and we did buy some jewelry. They were not pushy a polite no and they were gone. There was music and a pool game everyday at pool bar which we enjoyed alot. There is a quiet pool for those who just want to relax. Evening was alot of fun with music and games we went every evening each night was different. They work hard to make your time enjoyable we lived every minute! We booked 2 excursion with Frank the tank and both were awesome. Catamaran sunset cruise was a favorite they pic you right up on the beach. Would definitely return to this paradise was pur first visit to Costa Rica and They made us fall in love with the them and the country!
