Beautiful location! Resort was, eh.
We have stayed in Secrets resorts several times over the years. It feels as the corporation has grown, the resort quality has been significantly watered down. The food wasn't bad, but definitely not top quality. For being on the ocean, there really wasn't much in the way of seafood. The room was blah and dated. The shower was leaking above the head. It soaked the plaster so wet goopy plaster would fall on you while you showered. Housekeeping staff would smooth it each day. We told the front desk, but it was never repaired. They were at 100% occupancy, so they were busy. The Sky Bar was cool, but could rarely find drink menus. One day, the bartenders on duty didn't know how to make several of their drinks since they couldn't find a menu to refer to. There were plenty of staff. However, so many were Unlimited Vacation Club reps. They are everywhere. They are incredibly friendly and chat it up with you until you tell them you're not interested or you've done the presentation before. It was like staying at a hotel with a whole lot of friendly used car salesmen. Okay, now the good. The staff were always so friendly and accomodating. Everything was clean and well kept. Beach and pool staff did everything they could to find chairs for you and clear up unused chairs where folks just left towels. Staff in the buffet restaurant worked so hard to get tables opened up quickly for such high demand. The resort location and views were some of the best we've ever seen. So beautiful. Overall, resort was OK, location was excellent, staff were great.
Great First Stay
Our first trip to a Secrets Resort, so we weren't sure what to expect. We have a favorite resort south of Cancun that sets the bar very high for us, so we were concerned that no other resort could compare. While Secrets Huatulco was quite different than what we are used to, it more than met our expectations! The pros are the view, the beach, the pools, the food, the drinks,...just about everything! Just a few cons: -When we arrived, no one showed us to our room or filled us in about the resort. We basically got our key and were told to go find our room. We got lost trying to get out of the building, and then struggled to get to the pool level. Thank you to the nice guest who walked us to the correct elevator, rode down with us, and gave us a quick rundown of the resort. -We knew there was a dress code for dinner, but didn't count on men having to wear a sleeved shirt for breakfast or lunch. Seems to be overkill, especially when women could walk into the restaurants in their swimwear. -We were eaten alive by some sort of bugs, and we were not the only ones. Not really the resorts fault, but the spray we brought didn't do anything, nor did the anti-itch cream we had. Luckily, a lady we met via TripAdvisor forums and at the marina in town directed us to the pharmacia for something that did the trick-thanks, Maria! Overall, we had a great time, and we will most likely be back for another stay!
One of the best all-inclusive experiences
Spectacular scenery, comfortable room with ocean view, excellent food and drinks, lots of space to lounge around, various activities to participate and fantastic service all around... what more would you ask for on your sun vacation? Having been in many different all-inclusive resorts, this resort was definitely one of the top. No wonder many guests are repeat visitors (majority is Canadian, some locals during the weekend). First of all, I was very impressed with the food. We all know that the food in most of all-inclusive resorts is usually just a little short in taste, but in this resort we visited all restaurants and wanted to try again. Especially, the Mexican one offers the great authentic local food menu. We had cappuccino and coffee with Bailey's at Coco Cafe, breakfast at Market Cafe, lunch at Castaway, dinner at one of the 6 different restaurants and actually looked forward to each meal time. My personal favorite is Oceana. Check out Barefoot Grill for lunch as they sometimes offer special local food menu or cooking contests (i.e. paella). And the drinks - they use the real bottles with better quality alcohol and make the drinks less water-downed. Also the quality of ice cubes was much better (I always get some funny feeling about the ice used in the all-inclusive resorts.) You can float around in the huge pool all day if you want, but if you rather want to get into actions, there are many options. Other than usual pool activities (volleyball, aquarobics, basketball, football etc.), you can walk to the beach (the sands are little coarse but you get used to it) in front of the resort and walk little further to another beautiful beach next to it. Snorkeling, kayaking to Playa Punta Arena, paddle boarding, and sailing are safe and popular options and the service is great. We also walked to La Bocana beach, about 20 min walking distance from the resort, and enjoyed the beach (famous as a surfing spot) and the best fish taco right at the beach. A visit to town is a must. There is nothing spectacular at first, but this little town will grow in you. The church has this amazing ceiling mural painting that I have never seen similar even in Europe. We tried pizza in La Creme and Italian food in Giordana. The dancing shows at night (3 nights a week) were very good but night entertainments maybe need some variety and frequency. However, live music at the Sky bar, live Grey Cup final match and karaoke night were enjoyable. After all, everyday was full of fun and pleasure during the stay in this resort (except some mosquito bites... bring your repellent). I'd like to mention some names of excellent staff - Gerry and Victor in the tennis court, Alejandro and Bruno in entertainment team, Cecilia in Market Cafe, and Ivonne in Oceana (thank you so much again for the habanero sauce recipe!) Sylvia for turn-down service... thank you guys for wonderful service!
Good for a quiet couple’s vacation but not so good for groups
Spent a few days with my wife last yeat. It was good enough tonrecommend to our group of friends to go this year. Sadly the experience proved that you are better off going only with your couple. The restaurants simply cant manage to setup a table for 12 adults even if you call a day before and explain we want to sit together. Even had to call the concierge to explain and the restaurant Manager on our last night to get it right. Overall service and food is good, location is beautiful, but look elsewhere if you are a large group.
Entertainment was lacking.
The biggest downfall of this Secrets location is the entertainment. Out of the 7 evenings there were only 3 shows in the main theater. Entertainment for the other 4 nights was a small band or single singer at the only bar open in the main complex. Seating was always an issue. Disappointing. During the day, if you're looking to do something other than read a book all day by the pool, this is not the resort for you. From an activities perspective, we are used to highly-engaged and fun entertainment teams at Secrets resorts. This team however, was almost non-existent. Activity options may as well have not existed at all....no one knew when or where they were happening, or if they were happening at all.
