Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf and Spa Resort is amazing. The food is delicious and there are plenty of options. The facilities are clean and modern. Plenty of events at the pool to keep guest entertained if being in Mexico at a beautiful place with great weather doesn’t keep you entertained. The resort staff are very family and by the end of your trip will be your friends. We did preferred club for our stay definitely recommend it the perks are worth it. The staff at the Preferred Lounge are always so friendly and welcoming. Luis made the check in process very easy and fast. The bar in the lounge is great, Alexis and Itzel whip amazing drinks. The spa facility is world class. I’ll conclude I stayed at this facility for six days and it was purely amazing with a fabulous resort but more importantly staff that wants to make sure you have a great stay.
Very Nice, but...
This was our first visit to a Secrets resort. It was a recommendation by our travel agent, as we wanted a different area other than the Mayan Rivera (four of us have been visiting this area over 19 years). A very clean and well groomed resort. We stayed in the Preferred Section, rooms 2430 and 2434 overlooking the ocean - very nice. It is not a huge resort and easy to navigate - a golf cart will take you between the room/pool/restaurant area on the beach and a nightclub/fitness/restaurant area at the main lobby. Keep in mind that we have been at many resorts over our 20 years of traveling the Caribbean so our expectations are quite high. FOOD is a very subjective topic, and it was absolutely good but nothing was really HOT in the buffet. The only restaurant that all four of us really enjoyed our meal was Portofino, the Italian restaurant. There was at least one of us that said the meal was just OK at the remaining restaurants. We expected more from a resort of this class. What we liked was that they enforce the published dress code - first resort we have stayed at that does this. It was nice to not get a wet seat at lunch and to not have to look at tank tops and shorts or a bathing suit at dinner. Also, even though you can order specialty wines from a wine list, they are very expensive. Expect prices to start at $80 USD and go well into the hundreds for most. Having said this, the house wines are pretty good. ROOMS were very nice, comfortable and good size. There was no lock on the door wall (rm. 2434), so keep all valuables in the safe. We were on the 4th floor and had no issues. The blower on the HVAC was so quiet that the only way you knew it was on was by the curtains moving. It had a nice sitting area that had an ottoman that was actually usable. There was a tablet in the room so you could access any information about the resort, but it is not real user friendly, so be patient with it. Further, there should be a tab for 'My Bill' so that you can see daily charges to your room. If you want to know what is going on during the day or evening, the activities for that day are all you can find. It would be nice to see tomorrows activities today rather than finding them posted at 6 am the day of. Our maid, Jazmin, kept our room neat, clean and straightened up every day. RESORT personnel were very accommodating, polite, spoke very good English and always had a smile. If you need a pre-visit contact for particular requests, Marcela Gomez, the Chief Concierge is the person. She accommodated all of our requests and met with us while we were there. Her info is email@example.com. Another person, if you stay in the Preferred section, was Louis, a concierge in that area. He helped make our visit fun and was nothing short of helpful. BTW, he speaks English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. Secrets needs to get a resort brochure in English. The pictures were nice, but we could not read the Spanish information that went with them. If you consume alcohol, this resort has high end just about everything. Twelve year scotch, many liquors and at least 5 different beers (cans and some draft). The overall entertainment is probably the best we have seen in a resort. Poolside entertainment is live music and different everyday. The evening shows were not the usual resort entertainment staff - some very impressive. We recommend rooms 4228 - 2433. The only problem with 2434 or 2435 is that there is a wall that partially blocks your view of the pool area. All of these rooms have great ocean views. Secrets has a tennis pro on staff with a very nice court. They really need to advertise that, as it is not something that you find at most resorts. Pool towels are rolled neatly and placed on each chair every morning. However, when you unroll that towel to save a chair, be sure to leave a personal item such as a book or sunscreen as staff will remove a towel that has otherwise been unused (it happened to us), again, we liked this. Finally, if you travel to Isla Mujeres, and we recommend this for a day trip, rent a golf cart from Bahia rental. They are located a block to the left coming off the ferry across from the gas station. Their prices were better than others with nicer carts. Expect to pay about $60 USD for 6 hours, gas included.
Another Great Stay
We really enjoy coming to this resort. We found the service, friendliness of the staff, and facilities to be excellent. Also, the food at all the restaurants, except for El Patio, was very good to excellent. We did not care for the El Patio, Mexican, which is a shame since we are in Cancun; but some of our dishes were not hot and some of the items were either underdone or close to being burned. The service also at this restaurant was rather slow. I know, where are we going to go, but this restaurant was not busy so we expected a little faster service. All other restaurants served courses in a leisurely, comfortable manner. They are always cleaning. In fact they washed some of the sidewalks many times during our one week stay. We had great maid and turn down service. The pools are well maintained and our beach friends said the ocean was chilly but nice. This is the only Secrets that I have been to that offers water Zumba. This is great for those with some aches and pains to get out and do this activity. Hector was a great instructor. They also do offer water aerobics. Three of us did have the hot stone massage. It was wonderful. Suggest trying it if you are a little achy from the plane trip to Cancun. We had preferred privileges so we had access to the Grey Goose and other top brands. However, they did have Kettle One and Absolute at the pool bars--yes, I drink Vodka. One thing we could not understand though was the stocking of Grey Goose at the preferred bar. Many times they were out and we needed to keep asking the bartender if they had any. He would try to his best ability to have it brought to him and for the majority of time it became available. Why they don't keep a better inventory of the better brands in their bar area is a shortcoming of the bar manager. We did have a little problems with receiving some of our daily complimentary items which preferred rooms are to have. I did address this on another review. Also, please check your checkout bill. We checked out at 8:00 am and there was only one young man helping at least 6 couples at this hour. First, they needed at least one more person checking people out. Second, our bill was not correct, they had added $2.22 on my $70.00 bill. I know it's a small amount; but if this is done to everyone who has charged the spa to their room, this starts to add up. Third, the amount was charged to me in pesos (What). Even though I did my venting we had a great time. People that we found to be extra helpful and enjoyable on this trip were:Hector--entertainment team; Ross--pool attendant; Waiters:Samuel and Jesus--Himitsu; Eduardo, lunch, and Antonio, dinner--Seaside; LizBeth and Melchor--Portofina; and Gabriel--Bordeaux. You will not be disappointed in this resort. Suggest you check out the night before and possibly avoid all the issues we had when leaving. In spite of the few little hiccups, we definitely will be coming back, we really like it here.
We spent 5 days and 4 nights. We were welcomed with an “upgrade” when we arrived. So instead of an ocean view room we were given a first floor room with a very small “swimming pool”. Seemed ok and didn’t raise a stink but was none to happy about it. Room 3124 was the room, it shares a connected wall with the barefoot grill, therefore don’t plan to sleep until 2-3am because the workers are cleaning, hollering, dropping dishes, and so on till then. Then it all starts again about 7:30am. Called and complained at 2am and they stopped but did the same thing every night! The hot water didn’t work and had low pressure they spent a day fixing that, the tub didn’t work, they “fixed it” yet it took 45 minutes to fill. We got skipped for morning housekeeping once and received turn down service only once. Our hotel iPad didn’t work and they didn’t give us our welcome package till the next evening after we had already had our massage so we didn’t even get to use the coupons. The spa was great though! We had a scorpion in our bathroom chase us out the room, took 20 minutes to find someone who found someone who got rid of it. The food was not great like we had heard. All the workers were nice and polite, not so much the office people, they were more worried about selling you another trip. All in all the trip was a complete disappointment but we made the best of it and had a good time. Won’t go back though.
Vacation in Riviera Maya
Secrets Playa Mujeres is a beautiful resort. Everyone is friendly and wants to make your stay very enjoyable. Took my husband for his 65th birthday and there were several surprises to make his day special. This was our 2nd visit. The first time was for a vow renewal ceremony on the beach and out first anniversary the same week. That was truly memorable and being there this time enhanced the romance even more.
