Hotel along water
We booked through Costco as they have been great. Location is right along water. We had amazing sunset views from our 3rd floor unit. Great space to hang out during the day, big open living room, balcony for our family. We enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi and short walk to shops in Kona. Management keeps everything in great condition. My teenage boys enjoyed the free movie kiosk on-site.
Oceanfront vs. Oceanview Room
This resort offers a nice oceanfront setting. The facility is clean, enjoyable, and comfortable in most respects. The commons areas around the beach and pool are nice, the grounds are very well maintained, and parking seems ample (no extra charge). Daily housekeeping was provided as part of the package and my wife & I liked that our 1 bedroom suite had 2 bathrooms, full kitchen plus washer/dryer. Checking in was unpleasant and the wait for a room was long, so we didn't get off to a good start. I would also say that the Air Conditioning system put only a slight dent in the heat we experienced. That said, we spent a pleasant and enjoyable week at a pretty nice facility that was convenient to some wonderful dining and sightseeing, Our only real disappointment was that we paid the extra for an Oceanfront room that seemed more like an Oceanview room when compared with most of the rooms in Building 1. That building runs almost parallel to the shore and faces the ocean fully and directly, most rooms enjoying 160 degree views without obstruction. In Building Two, rooms face more to the south and are divided into sections that are staggered behind one another. If you are in the westernmost section (rooms 123 through 324), you are pretty much on the water with a full oceanfront view. Nice. The section we stayed in was right behind it (rooms 121-422) and set back behind a concrete wall. Thus our room (221) had a deck with maybe a 120 degree ocean view. Our sunset was largely blocked by a concrete wall while most of the folks in Building 1 enjoyed a full sunset view without having to leave their deck. According to the desk manager who went over the facility map with me, 3 of the 5 sections that make up Building 2 are considered Oceanfront in terms of pricing. In my estimation, at this resort not all "Oceanfront" rooms are created equal. If I stayed here again, I would probably choose to pay a lesser amount for an Oceanview room unless I was guaranteed a room in the central sections of Building 1 or the first section of Building 2. Expensive lesson learned.
Pure bliss again
Having had a perfect stay in a condo at "Aston Kona by the Sea" a few years ago, we simply had to book it again when we went on our fourth round-the-world tour. This place is simply perfect if you want be as close as possible to the sea, listening to the soothing sound of waves crashing ashore, and relaxing in a quiet and comfortable environment, without noisy and annoying wellness and entertainment activities. The condo we stayed had recently been refurbished and we certainly didn't find anything to complain about. It had every convenience we could wish for during our 9 day stay, and with the car securely parked in the underground parking space, we could spend the evenings on the balcony enjoying the fantastic colours of a beautiful evening sky. In our view "Aston Kona by the Sea" is a perfect place for exploring the Western part of Hawaii, but rather tedious for trekking tours in and around Volcanoes National Park on the other side of the island
This is a very nice place to stay. Beautiful views of the ocean from our lanai. The pool was great. Stayed for a week. Never got tired of the view from our condo. Very spacious condo. Everything we needed, including pool noodles for the kids. Would stay here again.
A Little Bit of Paradise
We had stayed here 4 years ago and remembered it as good value for 3 travellers who need two bedrooms. It is fantastic and better than we had remembered. Our 2 bedroom/2 bath was very spacious and well equipped. It was clean and serviced daily by delightful staff. The toiletries are gorgeous tropical ones. Plenty of thick towels too. The kitchen was fully equipped with stainless appliances. The three highlights were the pool and spa which were great after a day of sightseeing, watching the surfers from our balcony and the BBQs on the "beach". There is no real beach as such but the sandy area with its tables is excellent to have dinner at. We grilled every night and then sat with our margaritas eating our dinner watching the sunset with our feet in the sand - pure bliss!! The two bed condos have a large master bedroom at the front with access to the balcony while the one bed must have a bed at the back, hence the sloping wall mentioned in other reviews. I totally recommend it and would stay again if we were in Kona.
