Stay away from the hotel! Is not luxury is rather OLD and oudated. I was a loyal customer of SECRETS, thisnis by far the worst ever. And if you don’t like it guess what: they don’t care! No refund for checking out earlt even for fraudulent reasons! (According to their description this is a luxury hotel....hahaha) Looke somewhere else, do not waste your money here. I amwriting this review just after getting into my room and complaining with expedia (no help whatsoever)
Worst Ever!, stay away
So I’ve been in other SECRETS hotels in the past and my reviews were great. But this is by far the worst hotel I’ve stayed at the Riviera Maya Area. My check in was efficient, just afterwards I went to the restaurant (In all the SECRETS hotels (and DREAMS) I stayed I enjoyed the meals and good food... well not today!. Bad food and slow service! Then to the room....oh my!, welcome to the 80’s! Outdated, cheap and ugly...nothing compared to my past experiences at AMResorts. The AC barely works So I call Expedia, I wanted to get out of here but guess what, If I leave I will not get a refund as a penalty for early check out!. So basically this is plain FRAUD, they sell this hotel as a 4.5 stars...and then because they are certainly not...easy! I get penalized! My recommendation: STAY AWAY FROM SECRETS AURA!
Bring water shoes!
Beach is beautiful, but photos do not reveal slippery rocks nearly everywhere below the water level. We witnessed many falls by visitors. We stayed at the Preferred Section, which has significantly updated bathrooms, compared with the regular Secrets section, as noted by other guests, rather run down. The Preferred pool is in principle reserved for Preferred customers, but in practice no one enforces this rule. We recommend that the rear Secrets pool be reserved for the loud music and boisterous crowd, and keep the music and ambiance quiet at the Preferred pool. (Both pools unfortunately were quite rowdy during our visit with many tipsy guests in both pools. It would be nice to have a quiet area and pool for a different crowd, especially the Preferred-paying guests. Tennis courts (one clay and one hard court) are hardly ever used and in good condition. Management is superb: Eduardo, a real gentleman, leads a great team at all the restaurants, and Javier runs an outstanding bar program throughout the resort. Both choose excellent staff. Angel is a fantastic addition to the bars: knowledgeable, personable and calm, while speaking multiple languages (French, Portuguese, Italian, English and Spanish). Eduardo hired a great addition to his team in Angel. We are not sure if Eduardo also hired Gilberto, the bell boy, but he is also very helpful and kind and arranges, among many other things, taxis to the airport. (Make sure you get the shared van at the airport, just to the left of the exit door from the airport, only about $9 per person; the return by taxi costs $25; some drivers want $29.) Please remember to leave a dollar or two tip to all the bartenders, maids, restaurant servers, etc. each day. While all-inclusive, the workers' salaries are not spectacular, and they certainly deserve, and are grateful for, a little thank you.
Average at Best
I have thought long and hard about writing a negative review so I will keep this one short and to the point..... PROS: Beautiful location, decent rooms, friendly guests. CONS: Mediocre food, understaffed, needs updating and maintenance (including the ice machine that did not work the 6 days we were there). Being part of the AMResorts, my expectations were just slightly higher than what was delivered at this resort. Loved the island of Cozumel but will certainly stay elsewhere if I plan to visit again.
No More SECRETS Here!
Just returned from week at this Secrets in Cozumel. This is our 7th trip to AmResorts all inclusive, and by far the biggest disappointment. Confusion and communication with much of staff just made it like their low level AI’s. Some of staff was great and wait staff was pretty good. But the food offerings at this Secrets was sub par at best! They were remodeling one of better restaurants (Oceano) Secrets has, but instead of just closing it, they served Oceano menu in another venue. We were “preferred club” as always, and enjoy the private bar and small order breakfast, hors d’huerves, and cocktails out of the main population. Breakfast in the club was cold, terrible, and just not complete. Want salt/pepper? Go to the bar. Afternoon appetizers were stale and just not fresh the way you’d think the daily rate we paid would enjoy. Rooms were ok, large and A/C worked great. One thing we noticed; Secrets was using a few restaurants at Sunscape Resort next door because of the closures at Secrets. AmResorts has made so many categories with their AI resorts that its hard to keep track of best to worst. But cost wise, Sunscape is toward the bottom. Nothing wrong with that, as your SUPPOSED to get what you pay for. We paid for Secrets “preferred club” which comes with certain perks, like “preferred club” pool. lounge, beach section etc. At no time while at club pool was anyone checked to confirm their status at “preferred” only pools. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when you can’t get a seat at pool, bar, or beach you know something is wrong. And you can sometimes tell by clientele and their conversations on how they beat the system! Personally we’ve had way more success and pleasure at the Dreams properties they have. Kids are allowed there, but from experience (and preferred club) easily avoidable if it’s a problem! And last gripe, all inclusive in Mexico is traditional to tip wait staff, bell staff, bartenders, etc. To get change at the resort is like pulling teeth. Only 2 times during week were they able to make any change. NOT dollars to pesos, but large peso bills to smaller, tipping money. Totally inconvenient. Sorry to say this one will not be a repeat.
