    An amazing stay

We had the most incredible week’s stay with Sunscape Akumal! Your staff were the kindest and most welcoming members we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They made our visit even more memorable and went above and beyond. In particular I’d like to mention the activities coordinators (Aldo, Carlos and Romeo) for making us laugh every day! It was wonderful doing yoga sessions each morning by the pool. Other activities include aqua aerobics, kayaking, snorkelling, Salsa dancing! The food choice was brilliant, with our favourite restaurant being Portofino for an evening meal. Local trip include the ruins in Tulum and various cenotes (we loved Cenote Azul). The beach is great and very clean. The no glass policy serves well. We won’t forget this trip!

    Exceptional Service

Being a group of 33 , we have received an excellent service from all employees. They were always smiling and very professional. What really went beyond and above is the chance we had to have our suppers together in a private section of  the restaurants . This was mainly due to the cooperation of Lucas. thanks to the amazing Team.

    Enjoyed Our Stay

My wife and I spent 11 nights at the Sunscape Akumal in late January. The resort was closed for renos when we booked and they were offing great deals with Westjet to encourage guests to book for their reopening. We've been to the Mayan Riviera many times, staying in all levels of AI resorts, and I'd rate the SA very high for value for this reason. It's not a luxury resort (those will cost you 2-4x as much), it's a refurbished older resort, but an excellent value for the price if you can tolerate the relatively minor idiosyncracies and hiccups with an older place. AMresorts bought the property for the land, refurbished the resort to operate it for the next few years until they are ready to tear it down and build a better designed, and likely much more expensive place. So take advantage of the price and value while you can. We were SunClub in an Ocean View King room. Room was very nice, only glitches were a sliding glass bathroom barn door that wouldn't fully close, a long wait for the hot water to appear at the shower, and a rain shower that sprayed a lot of the bathroom, but these were minor issues and maintenance is quick to come and fix any problems. Fridge was restocked regularly. We tipped the maid and fridge guy 50 pesos each every couple days. In hindsight, I think we would have preferred a Sunclub room with a pool view (not tropical view) for convenience. The non-SunClub rooms around the pool would be excellent if we still had young kids. The Explorers Club looks great for little kids (and their relaxing parents). There are better beaches in the Mayan Riviera but the SA beach is a decent one, notably narrow because the old resort was built very close to the beach. Expect rocks and coral in many areas because the reef is quite close to shore in this area but water shoes help a lot. Snorkelling at the resort is ok but if you're really into marine life and snorkelling, you'll want to book a tour off-site. Like virtually all AI resorts, the morning towel game for reserving beach and pool chairs in in full swing at the SA. The only way to defeat the game that we've seen in our travels is for a resort to have twice as many chairs as potential guests, which isn't possible with limited areas like the SA. The buffet is standard AI steam table fare, the egg station is popular in the mornings. But we enjoyed breakfast at the Portofino for SunClub only. The huevos rancheros was excellent. The al la cartes are also all very good and not having to have scramble for reservations was nice. We enjoyed a light lunch at the SunClub lounge; the ceviches were lovely. Hotel and restaurant staff were all helpful, happy and accomodating, something we've come to expect at every Mexican AI and we were not disappointed. We're not big drinkers but all the bar staff were excellent. If you want something special, go to the lobby bar or SunClub lounge bar.The beach bars are for quick and dirty drinks in the sun. Get out of the resort and discover the amazing Yucatan. We've explore the Yucatan for many years but 2 places we visited on this trip stand out. The AMR Sian Ka'an trip through the wildlife reserve was a lot of fun to explore. We also managed to snag a couple spots on the infrequent Jungle Place spider monkey sanctuary tour. This is the only place where small groups can directly interact with a family and there's nothing like having 4 spider monkeys all hugging you with arms, legs and tails at the same time. Amazing experience. Enjoy the great value of the SA while you can, get out and explore the Mayan Riviera, and don't sweat the small stuff. You'll have a great vacation, like we did.

    Mixed reviews from family members

We were here for 7days with two other couples (6 adults total) and overall this was a good hotel. Great location for spotting wildlife and sea creatures. We would recommend bringing masks and snorkels. The food was quite decent and had a varied selection, but some of the people we travelled with had a bad experience with a twist tie found in a buffet meal. We never had an issue with our meals however. The quality of the amenities was all over the place. Some of our party never received fridge refills and repeatedly asked for bottled water, while we had nearly a case in our room. The hotel staff at the bar and dining rooms were some of the best we’ve ever dealt with. Great job to Francisco, Gerardo, Eric, Julio for always being friendly and accommodating. Overall we were quite happy with our stay and could recommend this hotel to our family and friends.

    Very Disappointed!!!

I went with a friend who had never been to Riviera Maya and she probably won't go back. We had booked some months ago and I was hoping to get the room advertised on the website. When we got there we were shuttled off down the road at the low end hotel (at least that's what it felt like). I thought a tropical view would be nearer the beach, not next to the entrance by the road. So for everything, we had to call for a golf cart to come get us and bring us back. Of course we get to the room and our phone doesn't work. So this became a huge inconvenience. I felt I was completely deceived in the room situation. Then, apparently we could use only one pool which wasn't even near the ocean. The restaurants and food were decent. The staff was okay but many looked like they hated this management. Our golf cart driver Jesus was the best out of the whole vacation. We never got suggested about upgrading to the SunClub, whatever that was but clearly the hotel is very segregated and they don't tell you anything about that when you go to book. Super frustrating. While going on my own rogue excursions I did notice other hotels to put on my radar for the next time. Super disappointed as the value of this vacation was worth about half of what I paid.
