Sofitel Bora Bora Marara is CLOSED until August 2020
I have confirmation emails from the Hotel Revenue & Reservation Manager that the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara has been closed since March 1, 2019. I also have an email from the Manager stating that the hotel will not reopen until August 2020. My husband and I were supposed to visit Bora Bora and stay at the Marara in mid-May 2020 for eight nights. I'm writing this to warn others who may be visiting this hotel. For such a reputable hotel chain, I have been horrified by Sofitel's actions. My goal of this post is to give you factual information so that you can decide what to do in advance of your trip. First, I booked directly with Sofitel (not through any third party company, like Expedia) on August 7, 2019. At that time, the Sofitel representative did not inform me that the hotel was currently closed, and had been closed for renovations since March 1, 2019. I gave the representative my credit card information, and I received a confirmation email. On December 2, 2019, I sent an email to confirm my reservation. Surprisingly, I received an automatic reply stating that the hotel is closed. I couldn't believe what I read. I immediately replied. After numerous emails with the Reservation Managers in Bora Bora, I learned that the hotel would be under construction and closed until August 2020. While the Reservation Manager was courteous, it became clear to me that they are scrambling to re-book people at a sister property. When asked if they could guarantee my reservation at the sister property, the response was they are currently working on reservations in March 2020 and had not gotten to the May reservations. (NOTE: it's Sofitel Private Island and after my due diligence when I originally booked, I did not want to stay at this property) At this point, Sofitel lost my trust and I canceled my trip. Last, after canceling my reservation numerous times, and being told I could cancel and without penalty, on December 19th and 20th, Sofitel Marara charged my VISA for the full amount of my stay - not just once but twice. I had two charges from Sofitel. I am currently dealing with this situation. In summary: 1. Sofitel took my reservation without informing me that the hotel was currently closed. 2. Relying on the confirmation email from the hotel, I booked my flights on United and Air Tahiti. 3. Until I sent the hotel an email confirming my reservation, I never received any notification that the hotel was closed 4. To this day (12/24/19), the hotel has not affirmatively sent me any notification. 5. Sofitel could not guarantee when and where my reservation would be transferred. It seemed they were going to wait until a month or two before our trip to let us know that the Marara was not available. 6. I'm out-of-pocket hundreds of dollars for my Air Tahiti flights. 7. I've had to pay money to United to "re-deposit" the miles I used to book the flights. 8. After canceling my reservation, Sofitel charged me not once, but twice, for the full amount. 9. 21 days after learning about the closure, I am still dealing with Sofitel to get the charges removed from my VISA. 10. Last, I am very disappointed to cancel a trip of a lifetime to Bora Bora. I have lost all confidence in Sofitel hotels. I'm horrified and appalled by their actions. They fraudulently took my reservation and now I'm out-of-pocket over $500. If I had known sooner, I could have tried to book at another hotel but now, most are full or too expensive.
Visiting in may 2020
I have seen conflicting reports, is the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara open, or closed for construction? If so, when do they reopen? Really excited to go, and booked with reservations but have read about horror stories.
I stopped there to visit some friends
Actually I stayed at Intercontinental Thalasso where they write (on the welcome paper) ‘be aware of wild dogs’! If I knew that before I would have stayed at Sofitel where I went for a lunch to visit some friends. I saw their devotion to changing the crazy situation of the poor dogs on the streets of the island! Well-kept hotel in a fantastic location taking care of animals: what else? Looking forward to going back to Bora Bora to stay at Sofitel and to see the dogs’ situation changed!! Best from Milano
Good not 5 star great
Its a 2 part review, we stayed here for 4 nights. 1st - beautiful resort, great views, fish, beach, water and bungalows are great. Service other than restaurant is perfect! 2nd - upon arrival, they do a direct sales pitch for a romantic dinner, which is not cheap and it was very bad, food unremarkable, strange service, odd timings. Also we ordered the same 2 dishes from the bar, on different days and got different results. Give 3 stars only because i don't get why a 5 star hotel needs to push that romantic dinner onto to its guests, when the night costs much more than that dinner. If you do push the dinner then make sure its 5 star quality. Felt like a major ripoff. Everything else was good.
Best of the best
We had the unforgettable time of our life, nothing to complain about everything went smoothly, Would love to come back soon thanks a lots Julien for the warm service and the surprise birthday singing group, it made my day......
