Solid 3.5 with annoying niggles
We travelled 26 Oct for two weeks. This was a late booking having previously booked hotel with TC. Any hotel is this area takes around two hours from the airport via coach transfer. On arrival checkin was swift with a welcome drink and a refreshing hand towel. Two door cards and two towel cards and we were off to our room, bell boy taking us in the many golf carts that are in constant use. Our room second floor in the adult only block, had two beds, flat screen tv, tea coffee making facilities fridge with mini bar whisky, vodka, rum, Soft drinks and a couple of beers. Large bathroom complete with jacuzzi bath with separate shower and toilet with jack and Jill sinks. A selection of toiletries Face cloths and quality towels. We found the beds comfortable and you also get a choice of four different types of pillow. Our air conditioning system was one of the best we have encountered, with various controls for speed and temp settings. Storage was adequate for a two week stay. You also get butler service! We asked for two pillows which didn’t appear until we phoned reception. Our first four days were problem free then cracks started to appear. No face cloths, only one coffee left, our balcony was never cleaned during our stay and no clothes airer to dry swim suits etc. Buffet located next to main lobby had a vast choice, with many fresh items cooked to order, yes it’s repetitive and not always hot but that’s buffets. It was possible to make individual meals and a microwave was on hand if you like things piping hot. We found 60% of the time tables were not fully set up. In addition you also have the choice of twelve restaurants. We had two meals in dolci vita (Italian) which were enjoyable with good service. This restaurant is in a temporary location due to refurbishment being under taken. The arliquin is another restaurant located at luxury Bahia this one being gourmet and again the service and food were good, this one is set in air conditioned room. The final restaurant was situated at coba which is a five Minute trolley ride from Akumal lobby. Our first meal here was perfect in every way so decided to book again. However, the second time was disappointing different waiter no refreshing hand towel main and desert only Luke warm, waiter was not interested when this was pointed out. In fact it became a struggle to get coffees and were not even offered the cheese board. When staying at the luxury Bahia you have the option to dine in any of the restaurants but you have to pre book and this can be a problem as they are not open every evening and remember some require long trousers. You will be turned away. We had lunch at the sian ka’an which is adults only the buffet is much smaller but perfectly adequate and you do get the benefit from the dining room being air conditioned. This is located in the jungle so you will see many species of animal during your travels around the complex. Mosquito’s are a problem and a good repellent is advisable the local repellant called OFF is very good. The beach area is not the best but you get the option to sit in adult only areas and are never very far from, bars, food and towel stations. Las cocos was our preferred option with a good service from the beach bar. You can also walk to the water sports centre with all non motorised activities free of charge, hobies, canoe and paddle boards. Jet skies, para sailing etc at charge. Also various diving packages are available at varying prices. If you prefer pool to beach you have great choice adults only, and two other pools the main pool if front of the lobby has all day entertainment for all ages. The hotel over all is clean the staff are all pleasant and small regular tips will get you that personal experience. Premium drinks and various cock tails are included within the price. The gardens are well maintained but as this is an eco hotel the waste water is used on the gardens so it can smell like the local farm. Having said that they have dolphins located in a small pool, Which goes against the grain of being eco friendly! The wifi is usable but you only get 24 hours at a time, it logs out every time you close your phone, then have to re-apply every 24 hours. NOT GOOD. In summary it does most things well but the minor issues become annoying over time. It would not stop us returning in the future but needs work to get five stars.
Fantastic holiday that ticked all the boxes
Absolutely fantastic holiday, we spent 11 nights at the end of October, family of 3 with a 6 year old. Out of all the places we have visited, Cuba, Barbados, Egypt - this hotel beats them all and ticks every single box. 5 stars on the pool, service, restaurants, food, rooms, getting around the different hotels, facilities, bars, choice of excursions etc. I cannot praise this hotel any more highly and we definitely plan to return. We booked with TUI. There is a lobby shop in the hotel, where you can buy essentials and suncreams. Getting around the other Bahia hotels in the complex is fantastic, they have buggies that operate on different routes, you can use all the services, pool, buffets and A la carte restaurants at all the other hotels if you go for the All inclusive package - definitely worth it. They have Hacienda - which is owned by Bahia Principe which houses stalls to buys your presents etc. All the staff are brilliant and very accommodating. **Only one thing to be aware off - be wary of the Bahia Principe Privilege Group (in black) - they are 3rd party to the hotel, very deceiving & misleading and are like vultures, do your research, have a look a their reviews on Trip advisor (not good at all) and make your own mind up. They tend to offer you freebies/ gifts when you arrive making you think they are part of the hotel but unfortunately nothing comes for free as they have an ulterior motive to sell more..... Personally, I don't think the hotel should even allow the group to be present at the hotels - they have already started to give the hotel a bad name which is a shame.
Relaxing Days at Akumal
**(If you skip this review - must read at end) A friend and I were originally scheduled to stay at the Bahia Copa but requested an upgrade. The rooms we were shown at the Copa and Akumal were very similar, but the Akumal is closer to the ocean and the room we ended up with was a minimal walk to the infinity pool and adults only beach - pure heaven. No seaweed and beautiful, clear water. The geotube like barrier broke the waves and allowed a nice, calm current to come in and out. Water was so clear you can see the fish that hang around the jetty without sticking your head under. We only had 3 full days and they were spent lounging. Saturday was our first full day and I assume the most common check in/check out day. The beach and pool were fairly quiet. Sunday we noticed more crowds at both the beach and pool and also noticed there was now someone serving at the beach - almost perfect! A bar on this beach would have made it perfect. The upgrade allowed us to travel, eat and drink anywhere on the compound and allowed us specialty restaurants each night. Of course nothing was available our first night but we did book the remaining 3. There appears to be set seating times with limited capacity so if you want 6 or 7 , you need to try to book as soon as possible. We ate at the Gran Tortuga - Rodizio (churrasco) which was very good, Don Pablo - very good and Cozumel - not so good. We did not care for the steak at all. The Cozumel did not get out spirits down because just prior to eating there, we visited the newly opened Sports Bar off the Akumal lobby. So much fun and delicious fish tacos and nachos. In hindsight we should have skipped dinner and had a second round of tacos. There was a comment that food was not supposed to be eaten at the bar - I hope they do away with that policy. The bar is big and should be able to handle both. Maybe its a night time thing only? Not sure, but do not think you should have to leave the bar to eat. Shout out to Miguel for being a great bartender that night. Breakfast and lunch was always in the Akumal buffet by the infinity pool. At night this was posing as two restaurants, I think one was under renovation. The food was typically the same each day - but it was good and we enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff was attentive and always asked mimosa - at breakfast and cerveza - at lunch. Speaking of cerveza... 1 brand - 2 types Dos Equis pale/regular and Amber. Amber was by far the better tasting of the beer and of course they ran out at times. First experienced at the adults beach/infinity pool - part way in on Saturday or on Sunday (cannot remember). I was able to get it in the restaurant for lunch. We also checked out the swim up bar at the pool near the lobby - no amber. However, Alessio(?) was a fabulous guy and asked someone to bring the amber from another bar. Thanks to our new friends who shuttled the beer across the pool, I had my amber at the swim up bar. Fun afternoon! We really didn't look for entertainment however Caesar at the infinity pool was awesome. Played Bingo poolside with him and caught a little of his aqua aerobics. He's hilarious and ensures people have a good time. He kind of reminded me of Ramone from the Proposal movie (Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds) - if you've seen the movie, you know. One night we went to The Hacienda, a shopping area on property. At first you are dropped at a flea market type area, a little disappointed for the build up. But walking beyond, you enter an open air courtyard surrounded by stores and a bar. The Casino is also here. It was a nice night to walk around. Watch and participate in Karaoke - no professionals there!! ** After reading all the reviews, I cannot believe I did not read anywhere to BRING YOUR OWN INSULATED MUG!!! The plastic cups of beer are tiny and get warm fast. The mixed drinks get warm and sloppy quick. We were too cheap to purchase $24 mugs poolside. Slightly cheaper in the Hacienda, but nothing less than $10. Remove clothes if you must - fit them in your luggage!
Doing a week in Akumal. Staying at the luxury bahia principe Absolutely beautiful resort. Great location. The staff are friendly helpful and fun. Great entertainment with siso and angelo at the infinity pool. The beach is beautiful. The buffet is mediocre, book your a la Carter asap. Go see the nightly shows at the diffirent resorts. Many are outside and worth the shuttle ride. Shopping is not great. But the odd deal is to be found and be ready to barter. Our room is perfect. And a few pesos in the fridge get you a couple of extra cervesa. Tip the cleaning staff. They will make it worth it. Overall this place restored my ambition to travel to mexico again. But the Cancun airport needs to change. 800 plus people in line with 3 immigration officers is wrong. 6 hours to get to our hotel is far too much. And the hotel should try harder to ensure missed transport is available for the guests. Fix these few things and you are in paradise. Try it and enjoy the wonderful people and beach4s of mexico.

These are 3 names that were amongst many many excellent members of staff we came across While staying here, yes I do agree with the previous writer regarding Luke warm food, the choice in the buffets was mind blowing, but in our view of decent quality, the alacartes we ate in were absolutely excellent apart from 1,the service amazing,we didn't quite get to all of them but next time maybe,we tended to use the buffet by the infinity pool, where Alma amongst the many others in there were a Credit to the hotel, this was an adults only area including the beach which contained masses of fish in the man made lagoon perfect clear water but quite stoney as you get so far in so beware.buggies take you round the complex which includes another 4 hotels,Tulum beachfront, premier, coba, and Sian Khan which is adults only across the main road via a bridge, It was noticeable in other hotels premium spirits were at cost, even in the Akumal certain bars charged as well which I thought a bit odd, plenty of wildlife about agouti, raccoons, and masses of bird life the suite we were in was block 52 close but far enough away from reception the bathroom was in need of update sooner rather than later, but all in all an excellent stay,I would slightly disagree with the previous writer regarding waiting staff we never really had long wait issues so Perhaps we were luck Yes we will return here definitely just a quick word regarding the privilege club, you get invited to a tour round shown the extras you get then shall we say hard sell, not quite time share but near enough,it may suit people but don't waste 2 hours talking to an English woman in an office
