Wonderful resort for families, will definitely return

We had a great family stay at the Bahia Principe Akumal. This was our second trip to this group of Bahia Principes (previously stayed at the Sian Kaan adults only). First thing - these resorts are HUGE. You will do a lot of walking, and also make a lot of use of the shuttles. The shuttles are great, we rarely had to wait longer than 5 mins. If you want a small, intimate resort, look somewhere else. If you like the idea of being spread out, lots of pools and a huge beach to check out, keep reading. The great: The akumal rooms are very spread out and very private. Some buildings face the ocean but most are a true garden view looking at lush private gardens (ie. garden view does not mean facing another room, it means garden!). There are a ton of beach and pool chairs available - we moved multiple times to new pools throughout the day and never had a problem finding new chairs. Drinks at the akumal resort are top shelf liquor, and very generous pours! The wait staff at the pool/snack buffet is fantastic. From the akumal, you can visit all resorts (Sian Kaan - adults only, Tulum and Coba with kids.) The kids pool at the Coba resort is fantastic for kids probably up to 6-7, there are lots of waterslides and a great splashing pool. Our kids (1.5 &4 loved it). Book a dinner ASAP at the Gran Tortuga (brazilian food) at the Tulum resort - delicious. The ok: food at the buffets is reasonably varied and reasonably tasty. Not the best food but a decent selection. The not good: service at the buffets was often very slow. We waited multiple times 10+ minutes for a high chair, and our plates were rarely cleared before we finished. Food at the other a la carte restaurants we tried (Portofino and Mikado) was cold and not very good, seems likely it's transported from a central kitchen.

Great place to relax and unwind

This was our 4th time to Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal...I guess that tells you something about the place. Francisca, Maria and Olivia in the main buffet were great and went the extra mile to make our anniversary and granddaughter's 2nd birthday extra special!! The new sports bar was a lot of fun and became our hangout place most evenings...Carlos, Andy, Omar, Wendy and Henery made sure we were well looked after. A la cartes are a fine dining experience every night. Rooms are okay and the beds are firm, but comfortable. Beach area is exceptionally well maintained. Only part that was a let down was the staff that run the equipment for kayaking, snorkelling, sailing (not friendly or well run).

    Poor Poor Poor

Let me start by saying that I Do Not Recommend this place at all. If you like watered down nasty drinks and cold food, then you are in luck with this resort. My husband and I travel 2x a year and this is the worst resort we have ever been to. The Hotel itself is nice, the lobby is very nice, clean, great service at the registration, really nice decoration by the lobby for Christmas but it kind of ends there. The rooms are dated (Not Luxury at All). If you want a decent drink, you gotta pay for it as it is not included in any of the All Inclusive packages (Ridicules). I will post the menu with the Drink prices. No service at the pool, no service by the beach. I would say this is a nice Solid 2.5-3 Star Hotel.

    Another amazing vacation

6th time to the Bahia Principe hotels on the Mayan Riverera. Our stay at the Akumal property could not have been better or more enjoyable. Our family of 4 were treated to amazing beaches, beautiful pools, bountiful eating options, and some of the most caring and genuine hotel staff we have seen. The hotel employees are the reason we return to this property. If you are in the main buffet for breakfast or lunch, go see Edgar or Rosita. They took such good care of us, and are amazing people. If you have kids, take them to Bahia Scouts to Fatima and Cynthia. These women are so caring, and plan so many fun activities for the kids. Our son did not want to spend time with us, he wanted to be in Kids Club! Go see Erasmo at the White Sands bar on the main pool, and ask for a El Jimador margarita. He makes the best! Remember, treat people the way you would want to be treated. Be pleasant, say hello, and smile. Your vacation may have a few hiccups, as ours did, but in the end it is the people who work there who are going to help you enjoy your stay to the fullest.
