We stayed in room 713 which is sea facing. The room was fine, it air con, a bed, storage, large bath with a shower, balcony with chairs, tv, coffee machine, and a kettle, tea bags and coffee, hairdryer, a fridge with 2 bottles of water, it even had shower gel, body lotion, shampoo, and soap! What more do you need? Those review where they are complaining that you have to buy additional water... well yes... if you want more bottled? there are plenty of places to refill your bottles with fresh cold water, the water is safe to drink from the tap, and I did without any issues, and I can have a delicate stomach on holiday but this one not a single belly ache was experienced! We spent some time on mamora bay beach which is stunning, Nigel came round with drinks on his buggy but there is a bar you can walk to and get drinks too. The water was clear and warm however without a breeze I struggled even in the shade after a few days so we tried the reef deck bar, towels are available easily around the resort, it was a quiet time so I don't know if that would be the same at peak times. No problems getting beds and shade on the beach or by the pool. Again it was their off peak time. There were other pools and of course the other beach but we didnt try them as we were happy at the reef deck, close to food, had a great bar, and a good vibe all day. Coffee shop is great but we didn't venture too much in for coffee, however the cakes were something else! Afternoon tea is available there daily. Gym is great, air conditioned with plenty of equipment to have a good workout, there is water and towels inside to use. Food, we had no complaints at all. The second week some things came round again but it was all good, plenty of choices so you didn't need to eat the same thing if you didn't want to. Buffet restaurant as lovely, we enjoyed the setting for the docksider restaurant. 11/11 We tried in the day and in the evening, no complaints at all. The 11/11 did have the same foods in the day and this followed into the evening but each evening there were extras that I referred to as specials and there were quite a few choices of food. We tried the picollo and the food was delicious but it was so hot that evening and although it was open to the breeze there was no breeze, only one fan and we couldn't wait to get out which was a shame because the food was really good! The one thing I wasn't sure about when we first booked was the jacaranda as it's indoor air conditioned. The first couple of times we went I wasn't sure still as it's a bit dreary on first impression but it grew on me, i enjoyed the disco, and the karaoke, and it had a pleasant vibe and turned out to be relief to sit in a bar with air con for a while! It was a really quiet resort so if you're looking for lively and partying it's possibly not the place but it was perfect for what we wanted, a total chill. WiFi, we didn't use the Wi-Fi much to be fair as we like to shut down from it for a while on our hols, when we did use it I could get on by the pool, my hubby however had to walk closer to reception. We didn't pay for access in our rooms, 1, because we heard it's hit and miss, 2, we didn't spend a whole lot of time in our room, 3, we didn't want to be on the internet. Trips, we hired a taxi at the resort who took us around the places we had on our list and he added extra in taking us along the coast, stopping off to get us black pineapple, he waited for us at stops until we were ready to move on, so we did st John's, nelsons dockyard, Shirley heights and he took us some extra stops which were well worth the stop. Hotel Staff. I believe that provided you are friendly, polite and smiley you will receive the same back, we had no problems with any staff in fact they were done of the friendliest I've come across. I had an accident whilst there (not hotels fault by the way) and the staff couldn't have been more caring, calling each day to see how I was, asking me how I was in the restaurants, at reception, walking round the resort, offering their services, help if I needed them. I was overwhelmed with how nice they were. Even the chef asked after me and made a point of coming to see me on the last day to say goodbye! The buggys we didn't use initially and chose to walk but after my accident we arranged them and yes you may have to wait whilst they get from one place to another but we had no problems getting them if we needed one. The beach party was great, the only thing i would say as a negative is the layout of the party was weird, so there were lots of seating in rows as if for the entertainment but the entertainment was in the middle of the food area. This meant if you were getting food you were walking through the area where people were dancing and where the entertainers were performing. The food should have been to one side of the entertainment then the seating could be by the stage to see the show. Still... it was lovely to be on the beach in the evening, it was all lit up and looked lovely... The only other thing I would say as a negative and it's a small one but there wasn't a cocktail list easily available or a cocktail of the day to try. Yes they made any we asked fir that we knew if they had the ingredients but we dont know lots of cocktails and we always enjoy trying new ones. It's a small one though and certainly didn't ruin our stay! All in all a wonderful holiday, I would come back here without hesitation if there weren't other places on my 'must see' list still to do. We will definitely come back at some point though.
I can't believe some people enjoy this resort
Stay away from this resort. Especially for the insane prices they charge this is a total rip off. We had a 2 bedroom villa, which smelled terrible, had stains on walls, plastic dirty curtain in the bathroom, ripped towels and insufficient air conditioning. The villa constantly had a terrible, musky smell. The bedding was so awful that I wanted to sleep in my clothes. They give you 2 water bottles for the duration of your stay, otherwise you have to buy your own. Get ready to do a lot of walking because all the restaurants, the beach, pools and lobby are about a 10 minute walk from the villas. They claim that the mini carts will "gladly" drive you around but that is not the case. In the 7 days that we spent there not a single time a cart offered to pick us up, even when it was raining. There's a small pool in the villa section which was constantly occupied with screaming kids. Obviously there was no bar service there or on the beach. You have to walk yourself to the bar or otherwise wait for a tiny cart that drives around beach chairs and offers beers or wine. Pathetic. The beach and pools were constantly out of towels and I had to walk all over the resort in search of clean beach towels. Now - the food. Where do I begin? Very limited selection and cafeteria type and quality food in all restaurants. I actually lost weight on this vacation because there was nothing to eat. Service is spotty, you can wait for drinks for 30 minutes. Liquor is not top shelf and drinks are watered down. Tap water reeks of chemicals. At one restaurant I stood for 15 minutes with my daughter until finally one of the waitresses decided to approach us - the restaurant was half empty. The WiFi is not complimentary and service was in and out daily. There's absolutely no activities for the kids. Overall, not an enjoyable experience at this resort. The only good thing was that we occupied ourselves with daily excursions on the island - buggy tour, zip lining, swimming with rays and jet skiing. Overall I was shocked what the resort provides for the money they charge. I've stayed at top resorts before such as Bavaro, Grand Velas, Paradisus and Finest. This hotel should have 2 stars.
My family (me, husband and kids 13 and 11) visited a few weeks ago and had a great time. Our room was just off the lobby area, so we were very close to everything. We had a patio with a lovely view of Coco Beach. The room was clean and comfortable, but we really spent very little time there because there is so much else to enjoy. The majority of our days were spent on Mamora Bay beach. There were plenty of lounge chairs and lots of shade (very important for me, as I’ve had melanoma). We tried most of the water sports available, our favorite being sailing the Hobie Cats around the bay. There are a few floats in the water to enjoy, and Alfred always kept us stocked with cold drinks from his golf cart. We also frequented the reef deck pool, and again found plenty of shade and chairs available. Towels were well stocked at the front desk, pool bars and water sports hut, we just exchanged when needed. We found the dining options to be very good. Breakfast at Rainbow Garden offered a good variety, and we loved the smoothie station. The buffet lunch at Rainbow was also a good choice, offering both hot and cold items, salads, etc. The beach bar had good burgers, sandwiches, nachos and the like. Dinners were split between the specialty nights at a Rainbow Garden (we did steak night, seafood night and French night) and the buffet at Docksider, and 11/11 on the day we arrived for an early dinner. There were plenty of choices and we had no complaints. The coffee shop was one of our favorite things. We enjoyed afternoon tea, and the fruit slushes, coffee slushes and yummy desserts were addictive. Fitzroy, one of the baristas, was our favorite- he remembered our names from day one! We participated in lots of fun activities - bingo, Caribbean cooking class, and evenings in the Jacaranda lounge- singing karaoke, playing music and movie trivia, live music and DJ nights. The Full Moon party on the beach was also fun- tons of food, music and dancing. We did the Pink Panther tour and had a great time seeing the beautiful island. I can’t understand the negative reviews because we truly enjoyed our stay in Antigua and St. James’s Club and would definitely return.
Amazing holiday while visiting in slow season
myself and my boyfriend stayed at the st James club for 1 week towards the end of August going into sept. We were a little worried as this was monsoon season and also the slow season in the Caribbean with that being said it was very quiet but we absolutely loved it for a young couple we agreed it was maybe just too quiet for us at night as there is not much going on at all but if your looking to relax and chill out then it’s the place!! We arrived to a lovely welcome drink and were taken to our rooms by the golf buggy porters (who also will take you anywhere in the resort during your stay) We stayed in the junior suite with sea view the room was stunning & spacious with a gorgeous view to wake up to every morning we had room 841 on an all inclusive basis. The resort itself is very big and I would love to come back and stay when in high season. It has 2 main beaches coco beach & mamora bay beach - coco beach is the windy beach still lovely but smaller and doesn’t get the sun as much. Mamora bay beach is stunning and has all your water sports as well as the beach bar grill which offers drinks and snacks throughout the day ! There is also staff on the beach who drive up and down on the buggys giving out drinks to yourself. Food - the resort has 3 main restaurants with an additional restaurant that has an additional charge personally we didn’t bother as we loved the ones in the all inclusive. Breakfast every morning is fab with so much to choose from we loved the omelette station and also the smoothie station which were made fresh for you on demand on what you wanted in them !! Lunch you could choose from the buffet style which always had a good selection , 11/11 which was the same menu everyday made up of pizzas , pasta , salads , wraps etc we really loved the pizzas !! Then down at mamora beach was the beach grill serving hot dogs , burgers , nachos and snacks each day made fresh and you helped yourself to toppings such as sauces etc. Dinner - dinner was different each night it was either buffet style at the rainbow or the docksider or else there was themed nights which you choose from a menu such as steak night , seafood night etc the only time we didn’t enjoy dinner was down at the docksider the restraint is a lovely setting but the food was not great and lots of flys on tables at dinner etc which was annoying. 24 hour coffee shop My fav thing about the resort was the coffee shop opened 24 hour I would go here every morning for my coffee as it was fresh & hot !! The coffee you get at breakfast was always look warm. It has a large selection each day of fresh cakes , pastries & cookies along with fruit slush drink , iced coffee and other speciality coffee. I also don’t drink dairy milk and the coffee shops has all non dairy options from almond , coconut , soya. Between the hours of 4-6 I think they have an afternoon tea which serves sandwiches , scones & cakes. The only downfall to the resort is if you want WiFi in your room it is an additional cost and also if you want bottled water this is not included in your all inclusive either you have to purchase fresh bottles at a cost from the gift shop as we drink a lot of water we were let down but also there is so many water dispensers round the complex with drinking water to fill up your bottles etc. Some of the alcoholic drinks were not premium brand and you could taste the diff the wine wasn’t the best so we just stuck to cocktails for the whole holiday would highly recommend - PARADISE. If you like soft fizzy drinks you will struggle to taste one that is actually fizzy all the sodas are flat as a pancake so recommend buying fresh ones from gift shop. The pool areas are lovely the reef deck pool is more lively with music playing and some activities then next to cocos beach bar is another pool smaller but very nice. If you walk round the bay towards mamora bay bar there is an adult only pool made up of 3 pools and a waterfall which is lovely and peaceful. Make sure you book your dinner reservations in the morning as it was slow season we never had a problem but could imagine the busier season to book in advance. Not much going on at nighttime the jacardana bar which is the only main bar open after dinner lacks atmosphere its very dark and dingey and has a dj on most nights but we found it quite depressing. If your looking for a more lively night time hotel I would look elsewhere The resort is fabulous and is exactly the relaxing chill out holiday we needed it is beautiful and Antigua is a gorgeous island we will most defo be back ! Shout out to some of the amazing staff we met on our stay : MARTINE who is amazing and friendly he made our holiday always keeping us entertained round the pool ! CHEVY lovely girl who made us laugh daily and made the best cocktails at the resort ! CLEOPATRA who I think is head of all the food & beverage at the resort she is so friendly and spoke to us whenever we were eating asking how the food was and if there was anything else she could help with she’s is very good at her job and such a friendly person. THOMAS one of the hotel porters who was so friendly and helped us out during the stay. COLLETTE lady who worked at reception who was so helpful everyday on answering our questions and helping us out she also let us use the hotel computer everyday and nothing was ever too much. We would love to come back again thanks for a great stay xx
Relaxing Holiday - nice hotel
Spent a week with my family here in August. When we arrived I was expecting a slightly larger resort having visited Dominican Rep and Mexico recently and it was much smaller than expected. The first day was spent getting used to the slow service! Again compared to Dom Rep and Mexico, however after a few days we were on island time and had relaxed! It's actually nice that you don't have the staff pestering or buttering you up for tips! Even when you do tip, they're still chilled and friendly! A few points - there are jellyfish and seaweed in the sea. They really do a good job of cleaning the beach and it's still swimmable - the jellyfish are small and can be avoided. Rooms are spacious and cleaned every day, from when I could tell all rooms have an ocean view. We visited Stingray City - wonderful and worth it. Shirley Heights - perfect view and fab food and music if a bit pricey (stop at the lookout on the way). The Calypso boat from the bay is a great half a day excursion and the staff are lovely. Not all the restaurants are open in August but the food was really good. Always something at the buffet, the beach grill was superb and the al a carte meals really enjoyable. All in all, not the flashiest hotel but friendly and has everything you need for a good time.
