Horrendous Vacation - Cockroaches and all

If you haven’t booked this hotel... lucky you. Don’t. If you have, try hard to get out of it. We arrived for a family vacation at the resort at 2:30pm. Tired from a long trip and with a 7 month old baby. The staff were not friendly at all. We were told only 2 of the three rooms were ready and that the third would be ready in an hour. At 6:30 we still did not have our room and were told in a rather snarky tone “some guests don’t get their rooms until 9pm”. Interesting. I pay to checkin at 3. Do they extend check out by 6 hours??? No. They don’t. We all settle into the rooms. In one room the sink tap burst; Water everywhere. We went to the from desk to be told someone would look at it tomorrow. We wouldn’t want to inconvenience anyone. Dinner at Dockside was next. Prisoners are served better quality food. It was slop. That night one individual in our party was vomiting and had diarrhea - food poisoning. The place is in need of repair ( photo attached) We all turn in for the night only to be woken to learn one couple has cockroaches in the room (photo attached). When we went to the front desk, she practically laughed. We asked to see the manager who tried to brush it off saying it was a “water bug”. Insulting to think we are naive enough to not know what was crawling around in the room. We asked for a different room. He admitted there were 4 rooms available but they weren’t cleaned and he was making zero effort to clean one for us. Instead he offered to spray the room. Fantastic. Now we can sleep breathing toxins with the cockroaches. The next day we met with Roger from Air Canada vacations to insist they move us from this run down, roach infested hotel. They moved us to the sister hotel The Verandah. 4 more of our party, now 5/6, had food poisoning from this hotel. Brutal. Entertainment- there is none. No music at the pool or the beach. Not even in the bar/ lounge. Zombies would love this place. The beach... seaweed everywhere. Awful to swim in. Photo attached. Washroom in the reception area is disgusting (photo attached). Never will I return to this hotel or it’s chain of hotels.

Great place for a family vacation

Just returned from a wonderful trip with our 3 kids to the St James Club, which was a perfect getaway. For starters arriving in Antigua was easy, and there is a very modern airport and very friendly staff to quickly get you through immigration. We pre-booked a taxi through the resort but there’s plenty there, and they are inexpensive for a 30 minute of so transfer to the south side of the island. The report itself was great, we had a beachfront villa that had a large deck and was just 3 steps down onto a beach, so the view was incredible. Everything was easy walking distance, the bay beach (much less windy and home to all the water sports, and beach grill), the various restaurants, and all 3 of the family friendly pools, but if you want a golf cart, the staff are very happy to help. Overall the staff were friendly, and accommodating, especially the man on the golf cart beach bar. The kids club was more of a babysitting service that would shove on a DVD and keep the kids inside rather than undertaking the scheduled program of engaging activities, and that varied greatly by which staff member was on duty. That was a big miss, as whilst our kids had a blast on the beach and at the pool, the scheduled activities looked great The good: Antigua as a whole and the ease of everything with the main airport / transfers Friendly staff, from the maids to everyone else, nothing was too much trouble Large rooms / great beach view Easy beach access and easy walking resort Plenty of pool and food options 24 hour coffee bar Not crowded even on a peak week Plenty of water sports equipment available The bad Beds were small (Closer to a twin than the advertised queen) Fairly tired fittings in the rooms (but grading this as a 4* resort) The ‘theme night’ food at the docksider restaurant was less than impressive The extra supplements tacked on for the week we travelled, a beach room, internet, and to eat at the Piccolo restaurant (an extra $40 per head even when ‘all inclusive’ Kids club - Overall

    Amazing vacation

We are VERY picky, and found this resort to meet every mark of excellence. The people who work here are genuinely happy to be here helping. The food was spectacular (even the buffets, which we normally dislike, were beyond great!). We never felt crowded or overwhelmed by a lot of people being here at the resort. AND our 8 year old son had a BLAST!!! We would absolutely come back. Wish we could stay longer! Thank you St. James resort. You’re doing it!

    A little piece of paradise

We really loved our stay here, the resort occupies a small peninsula with beaches on either side and is absolutely stunning. Check in was easy, the rooms were spacious, comfortable beds and everywhere spotlessly clean. The staff were all very friendly, Joe Anne in the coffee shop was especially good! Food and drinks were plentiful and of good quality and always had a decent range of vegetarian options. The hotel and staff always went that extra mile, the super bowl party for instance was great. It is a quiet resort but perfect for relaxing and with a good gym and plentiful water sports there are opportunities to work off some of the effect of all that food and drink. Would really recommend a Pink Panther tour of the island, great fun and very informative. We will definitely return here and would thoroughly recommend both St James and Antigua to anyone.

    Beach holiday

We enjoyed staying at the hotel. We loved the wide range of sports available daily and the lovely coffee shop. The hotel restaurants roatate opening and for some you need to book. Staff are helpful and polite. Rooms are clean and we were fortunate to have one overlooking the ocean which was lovely. There is seaweed in the sea and the staff work hard in the early morning to clear it. A good range of water sports are available also.
