If you have kids and lots of money the Grand Wailea is perfect. The pool complex at this property is amazing with slides, waterfalls, lazy rivers and a water elevator. Our grand-kids loved every minute they were there. The pools were very crowded but it took little effort to find spots in the complex without being crowded. There was definitely a shortage of chairs but even if they had more there is nowhere to put them. If you don't like kids or crowds probably not the place for you. They do have and adults only pool which helps. The continental breakfast which is free for Hilton Honors guests was perfect for those that like to eat on the healthy side. We tried the Sunday Brunch ($65) which was very good. I have to say the staff at the restaurant are absolutely five star great employees. They were courteous, fast, and always knew your name. The view from the dining room is fabulous. Rooms were clean but slightly dated. These rooms go for over $800 a night so they should be perfect. The reason I only gave 4 stars is because of Valet parking at $40 a day. You cannot even go to your car to get something the Valet has to either get it for you or they will bring the car around so you can get it. So if you go out 3-4 a day and wasting 10 minutes waiting on your car and then having to tip that gets annoying. This is my first trip back to Maui in 10 years and it has become very crowded. Still it is a beautiful island with great hotels, condos, beaches and very good restaurants.
Nickels and Dimes
What low intelligence they must think we have. They charged a resort fee ($40/day) and valet parking (another $40/day) which was not up front. This is not a cheap hotel. The rooms are nice and the pool is great and I expect to pay a lot and get a lot. But to then be nickel and dimed. The pool restaurant was bad enough ($24 for a very poor burger) but you kinda expect that. A latte for $7 at the in house cafe - but you maybe expect that. But then another nearly hundred bucks a day just for being there - too much. Way to ruin an otherwise nice property.
I have been there with my family and we had a fantastic time. Very clean Resort and Room. Well decorated Great and Professional Service. Amazing Swimming pool and direct access to the private beach. Only one negative point: The breakfast is managed very poor. There was a looooong line to wait the table even if there were several empty tables left from previous customers but now body clean and prepare for whom attend outside. This is not acceptable for such high level resort.
We stayed for two nights (and then five nights at the neighboring Four Seasons). The network of pools are six stars. Very well thought out and there are nooks of pool side seating so we never felt crowded. We purposely stayed here for two nights for the kids to enjoy the pools. It rained one of those days but we left on the later side our departure day so kind of got two days in. Few other remarks: - we arrived 9 am and rented a cabana which was great as we got a full day at the pools and we formally checked into our room around 5 pm after we were done with the pools. - the service is not on par with the Four Seasons which is to be expected as this hotel is probably 4-5x bigger. With that said, we were disappointed with the cabana service esp. given it was a material expense. - the luau right in the premise was a lot of fun and the food was very good. - the breakfast buffet was very good and we especially liked the garlic fried rice. Finally, the resort needs to be more environmentally aware and move to reusable water bottles and water filling stations. They go through an incredible amount of plastic water bottles.
Superb Property (but check-in a mess)
For someone coming to Maui the first time, this place is a real treat. However, be prepared for LONG check-in process. Not sure why such a great property understaffs at peak times during check-in. Also, once you've discovered the slides and pools, it can get a little touristy at the main pool. Lots of loud families and not relaxing, unless you go to the adult pool. Also wasn't expecting that at such a nice resort.
