Great vacation but a little shy on food quality

Our first trip back to Mexico in years and chose this Riu Palace due to its one of their new ones (less than a year) and in a different location than the normal Maya Rivieras where we would go in the past. Check in was fast and they had a room ready early and an upgrade because of our anniversary. King size bed and room was good size. Standard tub in the room and shower was big and water pressure and temperature was very good. Bar fridge was cold and well stocked and they kept it re-stocked as needed. Air conditioning worked well. They sent a small plate of chocolate strawberries and champagne for our anniversary. 5 good sized pools. 2 have swim up pool bars but regardless if you want to just lay around the pool side, they had a person constantly at each pool area bringing drinks and they came by often. Entertainment was hit and miss with the live bands and they have the usual resort shows. Food was not up to our expectations. We tried each of the restaurants and didn’t have one that we thought was “wow”. No reservations needed for the specialty restaurants but not every one was open every night. The buffet was better the couple nights we had it. Desserts were pretty good Place was not very busy and you could get a lounge chair by almost any pool any time of the day. Not a lot to do off the resort unless you go into Cancun or on a tour but they had activities through out the days. The comments about lots of mosquitos are true. Undeveloped area still but you can see the resorts and condos going in and in a couple years the area will be busy. We’ve stayed at several Riu’s for years and I think if we want to continue going there they need to change up their specialty restaurant menus. Staff are very friendly and willing to help out. Place is very clean.

    Poor quality food

Stayed between 30thsept-14th oct. Traveled with my wife. This hotel is very new and the service is first class they cannot do enough for you, beautiful gardens constantly cleaning and the rooms are very comfortable and clean. The waiters and staff look after you well nothing is no trouble to them. The checkin was a breeze they gave us a welcome drink on arrival which was good after a long days travel. The beach is amazing white sand and again very clean When you check in you pay a beach tax which cover the upkeep of the beach keeping it clear of seaweed. The downside to this resort is the food firstly the main restaurant floor is very dangerous meaning very slippery we saw 3 people slip over badly and the staff helped them from the floor also the food is very poorly presented undercooked then burnt and very rushed. The large joints of meat and the steaks were full of fat. They were not prime joints or steak.Every night it was the same food no themed nights no background music no atmosphere is was very boring. The alacarte resturants were no better. We have stayed in other Riu hotels before including a palace and the food was of much better presented and top quality.I would also like to mention take plenty of mosquito repellant you will need it.We would stay at this resort again as it is an upcoming resort with other hotels being built along the beach and you have access to the Riu Dunamar hotel next door which is a bonus and a great waterpark in between for adults and kids.

    Celiac in Mexico

I traveled with my husband and two children ages 3 and 8. We have stayed at several Rius and this was one of the better ones. The resort was beautiful, had a great beach (very little seaweed) that was close to the rooms and had good pools. The staff were great, very friendly and all of the staff were extremely hard working. Lili at the buffet was awesome and the beach servers kept the drinks coming. The mosquitoes were terrible the first couple of days, but then we barely got any bites after. The steakhouse was our favorite, although it’s outside and we had to leave the first night due to the mosquitoes. I would also recommend the scuba caribe trip to Isla Mujeres. I would absolutely love to stay here again- but honestly if you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity .. like me, I don’t think Rius in general are going to be the place for you. I got glutened and feel terrible. Nothing is labeled, staff are not knowledgeable about cross contamination and despite even asking our server if a dinner was served with gravy (which I was told did not).. it came out with gravy and a big fried piece of cauliflower on my quinoa. No chef came to speak with me at any point, despite having a letter explaining my condition. There are no dedicated fryers and they barely scrape off the grills in between cooking different types of food. They have one gluten free cereal- otherwise nothing. At riu tequila at least they had some gluten free muffins available. It was an absolutely amazing place to stay for the rest of my family (which is why I rated it a 4) but there are better resorts in Mexico for people like me.
