A bit dumpy
This is a very tired Courtyard by Marriott hotel...the location is terrific right next to the pier and within walking distance of restaurants, etc, but would definitely not stay here again. We upgraded to an ocean view and literally looked down on the roof of part of the building and heard kids screaming and shouting in the pool until later evening. Not worth it. Some mold in the shower and air conditioning that never hit the temp we selected. If you are looking for a nights sleep and easy location then this would be ok (but it is not cheap and resort fee is $22 per night plus an additional $20+ for parking). Otherwise would recommend staying somewhere else.
What a great place! The staff was amazing! So helpful and made you felt like you were wanted! The room was adequate, not huge, but we made it work for the four of us. The only thing we found odd were the sliding doors to the bathroom. They open like an elevator, but you open/close by hand. In the middle of the night, when you can't see, they make a horrible racket trying to close! Other than that, it was sublime! Perfect location for shops and restaurants. We had breakfast in the hotel outside and saw 10 different bird types all around! Tips we learned! 1. Get snorkel gear, chairs and umbrella from Kona Boys on the beach (it all came with the room) and get beach towels from the Front Desk. Great people, very helpful!! 2. Valet parking is only slightly more than self parking, you're on vacay, spoil yourself! 3. Menehune Coffee Shop (in the hotel) is the BOMB-DIGGITY!! Seriously good coffee and great breakfasts! Get there early if you like scones, they sellout quick. I'm not a big scones fan, but those were delicious! And the smoothies were mind-glowingly good! 4. If you like coffee, buy your beans at Menehune Coffee Shop. They have their own farm 30 minutes south of the hotel. They sell Peaberry beans there at a fraction of the cost you will find on any other island that I found. 8oz bag was 25$ there, 45$ in Honolulu. 5. The hotel is the perfect location for lots of great beaches and activities, all within a 30 minute drive. (Ask the concierge for help with transportation if you have no car. LOTS of shops & restaurants are a short walk) 6. ABC Store in the hotel had some of the best souvenir/sundries prices on the island, believe it or not. Hats, towels, sunscreen, booze, you name it, they had it and you didn't feel like you where still in an airport!!
Fine hotel, clean rooms, decent food, walking distance to lots of places in Kona BUT tremendously overpriced. Should be half the price of Hilton Waikoloa not the same price. There is just no comparison. Marriott should not be charging ‘resort’ fees. It is just a hotel with a smallish pool and access to the beach. Oh, all the poolside chairs are full by 8:50am, so get up and claim your spot early if you want to be around the pool.
Interesting and comfortable
This hotel is quirky but adequate for a family. The rooms, linens, and toiletries are standard for Marriot. Self parking is very close to the resort so no need to valet park. Staff is friendly and helpful. Hotel is close to restaurants and attractions within walking distance. ABC store is in the lobby for convenience and souvenirs. Elevators are fast and self laundry is available and affordable. The decor is a bit dated but clean. The hotel has an entire mall in the lobby, along with a museum. Historical artifacts, a local church, and Luau. The best shave ice on the island is sold in the lobby. Outside there's a pool, hot tub, equipment rental booth, and replica of a historical site. The restaurant serves an outstanding breakfast buffet that's $25 but worth it. Tennis courts and a small beach surround the property. I'd stay here again for convenience. Just know before booking that the hotel seems to have an identity issue because it tries to cater to every need and doesn't have one solid niche perfected yet.
If you are expecting a beautiful, new hotel, this is not it. The staff exuded enthusiasm and hospitality, but the building is worn. The damp rolled carpet did bother me, but the manager’s comment says that is being replaced. I would stay here again after they have completed updates. GREAT location!
