Best spa treatment ever from Detrecia Maeshack and her niece Kira
I would love to give a special thank you to Ms. Maria for the most wonderful facial I’ve ever gotten I definitely recommend her, she’s very sweet and kid and all around a good person with an amazing personality. Her facial made my skin glow and feel so soft, getting all the dirt out and getting that deep clean in my skin. I would also like to thank Ms. Teresa for the lovely pedicure, she has magic hands my toes look amazing. I’m not going to anyone else to get my toes done, for the short time I was there I got to know the great person Teresa is, I got some amazing life changing advise. This was just an amazing experience I feel everyone should go to this spa it’s so wonderful.
The grand dame of Waikiki
An exceptional property that stands apart from all other hotels in Honolulu. Elegant and well preserved. Not surprisingly, the rooms do vary in size and comfort. The veranda area is lovely and worth a visit even if not staying at the property. Parking is tight and valet seems like a must. Immediately next to the main tea of Waikiki Beach. Hotel can and does accommodate many foreign visitors, mostly notably from Japan, with an occasional wedding party in the lobby.
Historic Hotel with mostly Pros and some Cons.
The Moana Surfrider is the oldest hotel on Waikiki and consists of 3 wings. The historic wing in the center is on the national register of historic places and is breathtaking. When you arrive it looks like an old Hawaiin Plantation with the White columns. Because its a historic hotel, nothing can really be changed that would change the structure, and that would include soundproofing on the windows. The windows still operate on a pully system and for those who enjoy old historic hotels from yesteryear with modern amenities (but very small rooms), then this is the building to pick. The historic wing reminds me of the Hotel Nationale in Havana or the Saratoga and everything has been beautifully preserved. However, because the hotel is located in the "Times Square" of Hawaii, it is very busy outside with a lot of noise and street performers. If the noise bothers you, do not book this wing, ask for the more modern tower. We stayed in the historic section 1 night and the manager graciously moved my entire family (3 rooms) over to the quieter and more modern tower for the remainder of our stay. The tower rooms are larger with lanais but will be a little more $$ to book but worth it. We are adventure travelers so most of our activities happened outside the resort and in the mountains or at sea, but when we arrived back late afternoon for the breathtaking sunsets, we were always greeted by the friendly valet and bellmen by our last name... nice touch. The hotel restaurant for dinner was very good, but quite expensive (typical for Waikiki) and I recommend the tasting menu. (If you want something more authentic the venture out of the hotel). A grand banyan tree dominates the outside sitting area by the beach and during the entire day there's a Hawaiian band playing music with a hula dancer. The pool is too small to accommodate the hotel size and the beach is very crowded. Remember that all beaches are public places and hotel guests from other hotels cannot be prevented from using the beach behind this centrally located hotel so it is crowded out there. The hotel however, does have a small section reserved for their guests. The surfing behind the hotel was quite good and you can rent surfboards and paddleboards. The beach is much smaller than last time we visited as there appears to be a lot of beach erosion which is happening everywhere because of the rising seas (we are from Miami so we are aware of it). Overall a solid 4 stars. Compliments to the entire staff and manager for such a wonderful stay. The manager was probably the most professional I have dealt with over the years and Westin is lucky to have this gentleman running this resort.
Disappointment at Moana awaits you
The hotel is very clean and has some special qualities, don't get me wrong, great location, beautiful beach and lots of dining and shopping options. The pool area has maybe 30 lounge chairs so unless you are in line at 6am don't count on a chair leave alone shade. The beach chairs are $30 per chair and booked a day in advance. Mainly you will be in the sun and lay a towel on the beach. They cannot accommodate the hotels capacity at the pool/beach. I saw employees getting yelled at all day due to no room for people. The restaurant books up for dinner so make a reservation do not plan on walking up. I reserved a double queen which was not available upon check in so they rolled an extra bed into the room. Do not plan on a relaxing beach or pool vacation at Moana.
Bugs found in bed!
Upon my check into my room I discovered 4-5 of these bugs crawling on the box spring when I lifted up the bed skirt. Front desk was able to give me a new room, but still not what you would expect at a “resort”. Disappointed Marriott member.
