Worst check-in we have ever had at a Vistana resort in 15 years
We stayed in the new Timeshare side of the Sheraton Kauai Resort. We had stayed at the hotel side several times and have loved the location of the property. We wanted to try the new remodeled units with the small kitchens in them. The new units are small, but nicely done. Modern furnishings and well stocked. Our problem was that the staff did not seem to know how to get a kitchenette unit ready in time. We were kept waiting almost 2 hours after our scheduled check-in time. We were disappointed that management did nothing to try to ease our waiting. Candy that was in our luggage melted in the heat. When we finally got in the room there were no luggage stands (important because it is a small unit). We were promised two stands which were never delivered. We also found that they had lost our cold items and they had to go back to find them at our urging. This whole mess took so long we had to cancel our dinner reservations for that night. This basically ruined the first day of our stay. After that, we did enjoy the rest of our stay.
Great hotel and location. Room was clean and large with most amenities. The hotel has a guest laundry. The bars and restaurants are good and the staff is very friendly. The room rate was really expensive for some of the nights I stayed, but more reasonable other nights. There is a nice pool and it is directly on the beach. To get around the area, you really need a rental car, and self parking is free. Rumfire, located on the property, has a really nice bar with fantastic, attentive bar tenders.
Beautiful hotel only diminished by "used car" style time share pitch
First, this is a fantastic property, great staff and location, a trip back to the gracious Hawaii of old! So when we received an offer from Sheraton to visit again (for our 3rd visit in 18 months) at a significant discount we readily accepted. The only caveat was the "maximum" 1 1/2 hour time share presentation we needed to attend. How bad could that be? Yikes! Well over 2 hours later (a lack of respect for our time) we saw every bad sales cliche you could ever imagine on full display: "good cop/bad cop" 3 different "players" each playing different roles (badly), an end of meeting "survey" that was only one more desperate attempt to sell us more! I know, we knew what we were getting into, but I really felt that these "hard sell" presentations were a thing of past, even the car guys have figured that out, To be fair, there could have been a real value here, but when you are told you must make a decision in about 5 mins or the great "deal" is off the table, I question the "deals" sincerity. No free car mats for us! Please beware of this simple "presentation" or just soak it in as some humorous, "bad theater". In addition the time share "villas" are across the street from the main hotel, no direct ocean views, and the "villas" feel smaller than the hotels ocean view accommodations but they do include, kitchenette, washer/dryer, etc. We will be back, it is a wonderful hotel, but no time share "deal" for us next time!
We had previously stayed at the Marriott near the airport, which is not too far from this property. The Sheraton is not a large or as nice for the pool and beach. There are only two restaurants, Lava's is more casual and Pacific Rum which is expensive and higher end, but excellent. This Resort is bisected by a street, which is unfortunate, but not a real big deal. The rooms are nice and updated. We upgraded to an Ocean Front, which was excellent! The downsides are no, and I mean no decent WIFI. We could not even load a page on an iPad. The cell coverage is extremely weak as well. The pool is small. The biggest downside was the service. We foud the only friendly people to be the parking valets and the Pacific Rum. The desk staff and Lava restaurant staff were unhelpful and not at all friendly or even overly polite. Overall it is a nice place and the room made it all good. However, if I return to Kauai, I will go bask to the Marriott.
Solid Beach Resort
Bottom Line: Nice resort situated right on a beautiful stretch of beach in Poipu. Rooms are comfortable and in line with other Sheraton/Marriott properties. Ocean view rooms provide stunning views and best beach access. Pros: + Great location. Poipu is on the southern side of the island and gets less rain. Waters are also calmer as compared with the northern part of the island. The hotel’s adjacent beach is great. A baby beach, which is a beach for toddlers and young children, is about a 10 minute drive away as well. The resort is also located walking distance to a small shopping center. The walk is about 10 minutes but you have to cut through a timeshare community. + Free parking. Parking is included in the resort fee. + Free classes. Free classes and things to do daily. Fun for kids. Again part of what is provided in the resort fee. + Updated rooms. Ocean view room I stayed in was nicely updated. + Mini Fridge. In room mini fridge is a life saver when traveling with a young child. Cons: - Construction at the resort. The resort is currently going through remodeling. The ocean view side of the resort is not really affected too much but the garden view rooms are close to the construction. Construction is also making access to the resort less convenient. - Road runs through the resort. A road runs right through the middle of the resort. The road splits the garden and ocean view sides of the resort. The road terminates at the end of the resort near some timeshare communities so traffic on the road is not super bad although I was still surprised at how many cars do use that road. The road is inconvenient to cross especially with young children after dark. - Self parking lot is in poor condition. The self parking lots need some maintenance. The spaces are not well marked and it is poorly lit. I found myself using my cellphone flash light at night to make sure I didn’t get hit by a car. - Marriott elite status doesn’t do much. The property does not feature a concierge lounge and the free breakfast offering is minimal at best. Free breakfast selections consist of three options that include yogurt, small pastries, or a bagel. The pastries consists of a small muffin and a tiny cinnamon roll. All are served with juice, coffee, and 3 slices of pineapple. The hotel offers the alternative to “upgrade” by paying $10 and selecting something from the normal breakfast menu. Elite status also gets free valet service for the duration of the stay. I didn’t take advantage of this as my room was closer to the self parking area and tips add up pretty quickly.
