Firstly i never review but feel i have to on this occasion! So ignore the negative comments a hotel will never satisfy everyone. We feel the hotel and its staff do not at times get the recognition they whole heartedly deserve. To begin .. Check in no problems, quick and polite. Room in block 6 , large room, jack and jill sink, with 2 showers, hot water you need to let shower run for a few minutes to get hot water, plentiful. Bed large and very comfortable, although perhaps benefit from updating , nevertheless lots of storage , cleaned everyday with new towels and bedding changed! Acknowledge problems with mosquitoes however hotel sprays every night and take plenty of spray with you with Deet in to reduce bites. Pools acknowledge they are renovating a pool , noise can be heard however they are renovating which is expected and at least they are updating which has been highlighted as a negative with some reviews i read before coming . Other lagoon pool cleaned nearly all day by staff, excellent animation team lots of activities and fun! With an holiday atmosphere another credit to hotel! Beach - affected by hurricane, some years ago , yes seeweed , however this is natural and not the hotels fault although staff clean it daily , workmen near beach looks like they’re building docks so expect some noise infrequently. Plenty of lounges by pools and beach . Food, good choice ate at jaal ha restaurant for breakfast and lunch, special thanks to Juan and miriam although all staff again very attentive nothing is to much trouble, genuinely want you to enjoy your holiday. Also thankyou to Samuel on the beach who supplied non stop drinks! Cocktails are excellent, not spoilt by over indulging in bad measures! Good choice of alcohol. A la carte restaurants excellent, can eat every night if preferred which is a rarity! Beautiful and well maintained grounds, peaceful and relaxing, animals are visible dont forget its their environment! So treat respectfully! All in all please go to the hotel, it has the basics spot on and an absolute credit!! They deserve the acknowledgement of a job well done, nobody can ever be satisfied 100 per cent and reality needs to be considered! Weve been to various hotels inc 5 star and this hotels basic values, communication and client satisfaction More professional and a pleasure at the Grand Esmerelda in comparison! We are so pleased that we ignored the sometimes unjustified comments made by others and thanks to that one comment which changed my view and said ignore the negative comments and just enjoy it !! We’ve enjoyed this hotel and holiday! Its fun, clean, relaxing, pleasurable and professional, very welcoming made to feel special then book this hotel!
Me and my partner are a young couple. We were both sceptical after booking this hotel as a last minute holiday after getting a really good deal, we read some of the very mixed reviews and weren’t sure what to expect. I felt as if I needed to leave a review after visiting this hotel. I would like to start off by saying - please do not listen to the reviews and make your own judgements. Most of the “bad” or “worse” reviews are very over-exaggerated in my opinion, and you pay for what you get. It’s as simple as that. -The rooms were very clean, tidy and spacious, and had everything you needed in them. The maids cleaned everyday and always done a great job. The mini-fridge was always re-filled with soft drinks, water and beer. The ONLY downfall of the room was the fact there was no bath, however, this wasn’t a major issue. -The beach isn’t the best, but certainly isn’t the worst. The staff are constantly working on it, trying to get it free of seaweed. It was not awful. -One of the pools were being renovated whilst we were there. This was not an issue as there are two other very clean, spacious pools available, with no issues to get a sun lounger. There was plenty of space around the pool, whatever time you went there. There are constantly activities going on around the larger pool, the staff will come around and ask if you want to get involved, but they do not keep on if you don’t. However, there was a member of staff who walked around with a camera and constantly asked if we wanted photos around the pool, this did become quite annoying as we were asked a few times a day, we just pleasantly declined each time. -We ate at every restaurant apart from the Seafood. All of them were amazing. The food was lovely. We did not have a bad word to say about any of the food we had at any of them. The buffet restaurants were also very nice. I would suggest taking a walk down to the beach side restaurant each morning, the views are lovely. We much preferred eating at this restaurant for breakfast and lunch, it is also located near to the pool which was a bonus. There were plenty of options and a large variety, we were never stuck to eat. -In addition to the last point made, the service was great. I must give a mention to Job and Pedro at the beach buffet restaurant, they were fabulous. The staff go out of their way to ensure great customer service is given. Your drink glasses are never empty within any of the restaurants. The only down-side in regards to service would be that in a lot of 5 star resorts, drinks are brought to you around the pools, this was not really the case at this hotel. Drinks were only brought to us a few times. It wasn’t an issue as we would just walk to the bar ourselves, however, as stated most 5 star resorts do have this service. -We went to 3 excursions (Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Captain Hook - highly recommend them all), which were all around 30 mins to an hour bus journey from the hotel. We were due to do a fourth, which we paid for, but unfortunately I fell ill and was unable to go. TUI would not give me a refund unless I paid to see a doctor! (NO fault of the hotel - just mentioning, be mindful when booking these excursions in advance!). -The grounds of this hotel are amazing. It is a huge resort (you can catch a golf-buggy around various points of the hotel and it will drop you off to where you need to go), the wild life you see is unreal. From raccoons, to deers. It was great to see. Lastly I would just like to say, we had an amazing holiday, please do not be put off by the bad reviews, if this place looks like somewhere you would enjoy, then go for it! I would recommend it. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because I would not say the resort is 5-star myself, it is more of a 4-star. However, I do believe they are working towards improving this hotel, by carrying out renovations etc. I would personally return to this hotel - considering the price we paid compared to most of the hotel prices. -PLEASE take insect repellent. Mosquitos are everywhere.
A good place to stay
Don't be put off by bad reviews, because this place has all you need for a good holiday. Rooms - on the basic side but very clean and quite spacious. Beds are comfortable and free wifi, aircon and bathroom are good. I really only see the room as a place to sleep and shower, so it was up to standard. Food and drink - in a word, excellent. The buffet restaurants are of a good standard, although they have the usual problems of lukewarm food and being a bit repetitive. Saying that, there is enough choice to find a tasty meal all the time. The six a la cartes are all very good, we found booking them easy and the food was of a high standard. Do be aware that the formal dress code for men is strictly enforced - if you don't wear long trousers, you won't be allowed in. Drinks are readily available 24/7, with many named spirits on offer for no extra charge if you ask for them. There is a good cocktail menu, and they will make anything you ask for. Pools & Beach - plenty of sunbeds everywhere and the main pools are lively with lots of things going on. There is also a quieter pool at the lobby end if that's what you prefer. The beach may not be typical caribbean, but they are doing a good job in containing the seaweed problem nature is giving the whole area. Staff - a definite 5 star rating for the staff. Very friendly and hard working and they do their best to make your holiday a good one. All of them, from reception to the gardeners do a great job. They don't pressure you for tips, but the service was so good we were more than happy to reward them. The staff are probably the best thing about this hotel. All in all we had a great holiday, and can't understand some of the negative reviews. There are a couple of things to be aware of however - this is a large complex and you are allocated either a block near the lobby, restaurants and 24 hour bar or you are located near the pools and beach. There are frequent golf buggies to take you around, but it's probably not the place if you have walking difficulties. Also, the natural habitat means the wildlife is abundant. We loved seeing numerous coatis, deer, iguana, capybara and a few more besides. The downside is that the hotel is a haven for mosquitos. As soon as the sun goes down, they are out in abundance, so strong protection is essential. To sum up, if you have booked a holiday here you can look forward to a really good time.
First of all, if you’re reading the reviews here and panicking, don’t! We stayed in building 5, close proximity to the beach and pool. One pool closed for refurb during our visit, didn’t impact us at all. Plenty of sunloungers, lots of activities to join in if you wish (not pestered if you don’t) and people bringing drinks from the bar. Room more than adequate, nice big comfy bed, only Spanish channels on TV with a couple of US news channels. Lovely bathroom and the only drawback for us was that it only has a shower, we travelled with our baby so a bath would have been useful but we made it work. Buffet food is plentiful but only warm, not hot. Which is as you would expect really. Breakfast buffet is fantastic! Restaurants very nice but you do have to book in the morning for the following day and you have to do this at the lobby, which is a fair walk when you’ve only just woken up! 15 mins journey into Playa Del Carmen, would advise to go here for any shopping you may need (we wanted snacks and more sunscreen) the hotel shop is INCREDIBLY expensive. The hotel provides a shuttle bus here for 80 pesos each person, each direction. Currently pesos are the better option for currency, you get more for your money. Huge thank you to the extremely hard working animation team, especially Carmelino and Rosie. They were wonderful with our daughter and it was a pleasure to meet them. The same must be said for Juan who worked in the buffet restaurant by the beach, absolutely wonderful man and very hospitable. Overall, I would rate this as a 4 star resort as I have stayed in true 5 star resorts which do outshine this, however, our stay was absolutely wonderful and we have really enjoyed it. Thank you BlueBay!
All I have to say I will not be revisiting this hotel the only good thing is the staff, and the wild life. In need of a revamp especially the rooms, we had a good time but only down to the people we met while there
