The vision and dream of respected hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller. More than 37 years ago, he chose a patch of black lava in an inaccessible area, with two beautiful beaches, to create a work of art that changed the Big Island of Hawaii. Rockefeller envisioned a resort of world-class standards - complete with the hotels, golf courses and homes.
The first step was Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. In 1994, the second half of the dream was fulfilled with the opening of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Steeped in Aloha, the classic elegance perpetuates the true Hawaiian traditions of the islands. And in June 2018, the hotel officially became The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The contemporary feel of Westin Hapuna Beach Hotel is manifested in its bold nature. Working together, these two distinct hotels comprise Mauna Kea Resort and create an outstanding experience.
All guestrooms are ocean-facing revealing the long inviting expanse of Hapuna Beach, each with spacious private balcony and double doors allowing for the trade winds to breeze through. Luxurious interiors are highlighted by a selection of natural materials, including rich woods and fine fabrics. The palette of chosen colors reinforces the sand, sea, and sunset environment afforded by the hotel's pre-eminent location.
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is situated on 32 oceanfront acres, nestled in natural bluffs overlooking the silky white sands of Hapuna Beach. Hapuna Golf Course features 18-holes of Scottish links-style championship golf designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Taking advantage of the dramatic natural contours of the land from the shoreline to 700 feet above sea level, it offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Pacific Ocean while majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains form the backdrop.
In ancient times on the resort site, freshwater springs bubbled to the surface during heavy rainfall. These artesian fountains provided respite and renewal for travelers along the Kohala Coast. Thus the area was named "Hapuna" or "Spring of Life" in the Hawaiian language. This depiction of water became the symbol for the The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.

Absolutely incredible stay - the pictures do not show the beauty of the resort and views
This was our first time visiting the big island, but this resort is incredible. The pictures do not fully show the majesty and beauty of this resort. Don't let the construction scare you away, it's only temporary and is hardly noticeable. They have so much to do for adults and families. The adult pool was a great swim on the floating pillows and infinity pool into the ocean. The beach is a short walk and the sand is so soft and they set out chairs and umbrellas every day. You can rent kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, and more at the beach through the hotel. Hapuna was rated one of the top 10 beaches for a reason, its truly amazing and the mix of the lava rock to the sand is a spectacular scene. The resort has many great spots to sneak away to read a book or drink a cup of coffee. They sprinkle couches, tables/chairs, and even swinging beds all throughout the resort. The drive to the hotel is roughly 30 minutes from the Kona Airport, but being so secluded from everyone is one of the best attractions to the hotel. You didn't feel claustrophobic from the tourists around the resort or the beach. The restaurants were great and they have a complimentary shuttle to their sister resort Mauna Kea to attend their Luau or other restaurants. As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member, I received a warm welcome and upgraded room. They also provided 2 complimentary breakfast buffets; which honestly was a great perk because that is a $70 value per day and included gratuity. But even if I didn't get this free, I would have paid for the buffet every morning. It was one of the highlights of our days, they have an omelet station, local Hawaiian delicacies, fresh fruit, and more. We spend one of our days driving around the island and saw a few other Marriott properties, by far the Westin Hapuna Beach is the best on the island. We are already looking at dates for our next trip and you can bet we are going to be staying here again! Special thanks to the staff for a great experience and going out of your way to make us feel comfortable.
Their new rooms are amazing! Staff is super helpful and accommodating all the time. We absolutely love their check-in with fresh juice and leis. We arrived a day before our daughter and they were nice enough to do the same for her wham she came the next day. We were placed in a partial ocean view room that was directly behind the “construction” (renovation of the building that used to be part of the hotel, directly in front of the north wing of the building). This was really not a problem-construction is only from 8-5 Mon-Fri, the hotel was super quiet otherwise. The pool is excellent and the beach is the best one around! Would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a 5 star experience on the big island.
Ironman 70.3 and a weeks holiday
Great place to stay. Staff could not be more approachable and friendly. Pools are great and right on one of the best beaches on the island. Admittedly I have the highest loyalty level with Marriott so got upgrade, breakfast and a few other things. Will be back
Great Rooms, Great Views!
We stayed here two nights at the end of our trip and loved it! Not only are you steps from the beach (and a good one at that!) but the rooms and views are amazing! The beds are also super comfortable! However, I can't receommned getting the buffet breakfast, just order off the menu. It's $38 a person (plus tax/tip). Yes its good and yes it's all you can eat, but unless you put back a TON of food I can't see how it's worth it!
Excellent Hotel, Phenomenal Management
I’m not much of a review writer. But, I really wanted to for this hotel. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is beautiful, and the rooms are fantastic. However, we booked two rooms and they weren’t quite what we wanted through no fault of the hotel. After talking to the hotel manager, who was incredibly gracious and understanding, they moved us to a different room that was perfect. I’ve never had a better experience with a hotel. We will absolutely be coming back here. And the Big Island is our favorite Island - lots of variety here! 5 Stars Plus for the Westin Hapuna Beach and their management.
