The vision and dream of respected hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller. More than 37 years ago, he chose a patch of black lava in an inaccessible area, with two beautiful beaches, to create a work of art that changed the Big Island of Hawaii. Rockefeller envisioned a resort of world-class standards - complete with the hotels, golf courses and homes.
The first step was Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. In 1994, the second half of the dream was fulfilled with the opening of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Steeped in Aloha, the classic elegance perpetuates the true Hawaiian traditions of the islands. And in June 2018, the hotel officially became The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The contemporary feel of Westin Hapuna Beach Hotel is manifested in its bold nature. Working together, these two distinct hotels comprise Mauna Kea Resort and create an outstanding experience.
All guestrooms are ocean-facing revealing the long inviting expanse of Hapuna Beach, each with spacious private balcony and double doors allowing for the trade winds to breeze through. Luxurious interiors are highlighted by a selection of natural materials, including rich woods and fine fabrics. The palette of chosen colors reinforces the sand, sea, and sunset environment afforded by the hotel's pre-eminent location.
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is situated on 32 oceanfront acres, nestled in natural bluffs overlooking the silky white sands of Hapuna Beach. Hapuna Golf Course features 18-holes of Scottish links-style championship golf designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Taking advantage of the dramatic natural contours of the land from the shoreline to 700 feet above sea level, it offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Pacific Ocean while majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains form the backdrop.
In ancient times on the resort site, freshwater springs bubbled to the surface during heavy rainfall. These artesian fountains provided respite and renewal for travelers along the Kohala Coast. Thus the area was named "Hapuna" or "Spring of Life" in the Hawaiian language. This depiction of water became the symbol for the The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.

We stayed at here for 5 days and were blown away by the beautiful property! They greeted us with leis, cold towels and a glass of mango juice at check in which was so refreshing after a long day of travel. My husband is Platinum so we enjoyed free breakfast buffet which had so many great choices. We loved the adults only infinity pool and I really wish more resorts would offer this feature. We stayed in an ocean front room in the South Tower and did not hear any construction noise from our room. I found the noise to be minimal around the resort. The property sits on a wide stretch of white sand which is ideal for walking and swimming. Unfortunately as others have mentioned, the service at the restaurants is sorely lacking and that is the reason I didn’t give them a 5. We waited a long time to get waited on at the pool restaurant and the food was slow to arrive. We had reservations for a sunset dinner at Meridia and sat at our table for 30 minutes without being even greeted. We were walking out when the manager Matt stopped us and offered to comp our dinner if we stayed. He was very apologetic and waited on us for the rest of the evening. I very much appreciated his efforts to salvage our dinner. The restaurant is beautiful and the food was good so hopefully they are able to work the service issues out. Lauren at the concierge desk was also very helpful with dinner reservations and helped us with planning our route and food options for the Polulo Valley. Also we very much appreciated the wine and snack tray the hotel sent to my husband for his birthday!
Better second time around
so we finally ventured back to this property after being sorely disappointed by the construction noise last year and this stay was much better. We were given a higher room and there was no noise granted our stay was on the weekend. I also felt like the staff were much more on their game than last time. After speaking to some of them it sounded like the construction has been hard on them too. In short, we'll be back. We also ate at the pool bar for lunch which was surprisingly good as was the a la carte menu.
This is our second stay at this resort. The first time was 14 years ago when it was under different management. The rooms were comfortable and spacious - the ocean view was lovely. We were in the south tower, 9th floor, away from the renovation. The staff was wonderful- welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The beach is gorgeous and there’s some nice snorkeling along the coast on the north end. On the not so positive side, there was a wedding party and very loud band next to our room. It would be nice to forewarn the nearby occupants ahead of time. Also, the resort seems rather barren now. The former art pieces were removed and there were no gorgeous local flower arrangements. I heard that the Westin only allows living plants.
Great property, service can be better
We stayed at the Westin Hapuna beach resort for 5 nights in July with our 2 kids. My husband is a titanium member but I guess in this resort it does not mean much. The first night we went to dinner, we also went grocery shopping, you'll know why... The beach is gorgeous. It's a small beach but so pretty, warm water, no dirt, no seashells, no rocks just perfect - this maybe the greatest beach in the whole island!!!! Now to the details ... my husband has a 5 suite upgrade but we did not get upgraded, I don't believe they are full. Maybe because the north side is close to the construction, which can be noisy between 8-5pm on weekdays. Luckily they gave us our requested south side room where you cannot hear the construction noise at all but you can definitely hear it in the beach. You can still find beach chairs even at 11 am in the morning, they are that empty. We booked our room using points, as an titanium member we received the free breakfast for 2 per day, so total of 10 breakfast vouchers. Some days we used all 4 in one day, one of the days we paid for our 2 kids and on other days we eat our own danish, granola and fruit for breakfast in our room. It is a buffet breakfast but it's the same food everyday which gets tiring after a while, they charge $35/adult and half for kids 12 and under. They give you ONE bottled water per day per room as part of your resort fee, I think it's ridiculous. We we're just at the Westin in Grand Cayman, they give you 4 bottles of water when they clean your room and 4 more at night plus rum cake. Now you know why you have to go grocery shopping the first day.. We had lunch in their pool restaurant and it took an hour and a half to get our food, I was about to walk out but the kids we're hungry. Another reason why you just bring our own food, snacks and drinks. No service in the beach either, we have to go up to the pool restaurant which is at least 15 min walk one way because there's only one path from the resort to get to the beach, just poorly design. The service, the front desk is not friendly at all. They need to find people who is service oriented and customer focus to work their front desk or train them how to treat your guest properly, it is such as turn off. The beach is worth it, since we came to Hawaii for the beach this property did not disappoint.
This review is 2 years overdue, but I just felt compelled to share my experience of this magnificent resort. Since our last visit in 2017 they have since added a brand new second pool and changed the name to Westin Hapuna Beach Resort (formerly Hapuna Beach Prince Resort). I'll never forget the look on my wife's & my son's face as they stepped into the resort for the first time. The size of this place is amazing. It is in fact like walking through a palace. PALATIAL! And the scenery from the lobby balconies are just breathtaking!! Asides from our spectacular ocean view room, service, restaurants, and pool,... what really sets this resort apart from all of the rest is the spectacular long stretch of golden white sand, swimmable beach on site. Not only is Hapuna Beach probably the best beach of all the Hawaiian Islands (I've gone to them all), but it is regularly voted among the best beaches in the ENTIRE world! Google it. I cannot disagree. As I stated in the beginning, since our last visit the name has changed and there has been an addition of a second pool area. I cannot wait to return with my family to this PALATIAL RETREAT to enjoy all of the recent changes and soak up the sun & surf on Hapuna Beach.
