Grand time
We stayed at the grand palladium in Mexico and was at awe from its size and complexity, figuring we’ve never been to the DR we would give it a try. Size wise this is a decent size layout. Lush gardens and foliage. We found Lupita scrambling eggs at the Los Torres, she makes some of the tastiest eggs, during the night the hemmingway bar has live music then djs after to get your salsa, merengue, and bachata music to get the hips movin to the rythem. And its holds one of Grand Palladium’s greatest bartenders on property, was Christian who was always on point even when he getting bombarded with drink request, he always had a awesome smile and was attentive to everyone, Jesus was super helpful making sure everything was right if not he would help guide us to where we needed to be at the front lobby. The resort is nice, breathtaking, there’s always something going on to keep you busy. The app also helps finding things on the resort. It’s a new place new county. I will be back specially for lupita she’s like a burst of energy when you need that to wake up, with a beautiful heart.

AVOID: 4-5* Star facilities fatally undone by wildly inconsistent service, ZERO STAR leadership and management
So disappointed to be posting this largely negative review after a nine-night stay at Gran Palladium Palace, Punta Cana. To get the satisfactory parts out of the way before I focus on reasons you should AVOIDI Its part of a very large resort of four hotels (parts of only three of which are accessible to visitors who are not Members of the GP ‘family’ sic - more below). There are many restaurants, bars and facilities – the walk-up ones having a decent if unremarkable and uniform selection of food and drinks. There are multiple pools, a luxurious (highly/over-priced) spa, an OK beach if narrow over-narrow compared to the neighbouring resorts, and some enjoyable shows by some talented performers. That’s it – and if all you want from your vacation is a no more than 4*+ Caribbean holiday and you consider the headline price reasonable, then consider GP Palace. But you need to go with your eyes open about the gross and in some instance grotesque limitations. The location is a bit middle of nowhere and you are discouraged from leaving the resort. Punts Cana in general seemed dull with no real sense of place let alone distinctiveness. Turning to the ‘Palace’ (another sic). First the rooms are OK but unremarkable and not comparable to UK/European 5* - more a large 4*, and we had one of the Premier Loft suites. Atrocious and dangerously designed bath/ shower which leaves water on slippery surfaces everywhere. Although we were fine – it is a massive safety hazard for any elderly or guests with even minor mobility issues. Room cleaning is totally inconsistent – replenishing the minibar and tea and coffee and replacing towels in totally random ways regardless of any requests; don’t bother with the do not disturb or please make up my room signs because they will be totally ignored. I assume ‘do not disturb’ refers to not disturbing the cleaners doing exactly what they feel like at a time of their choosing. Second the buffets and the bars. They are pretty much clones although arguably the Palace buffet and lobby bar are slightly better than the GP Punta Cana and Bavaro. No menu variation. Ridiculous management means you will queue for very long periods on most visits regardless of whether it is a peak period or not, and regardless of whether there are free tables or not. Tables in the Buffet are managed with no customer-facing management at all – so there are too few staff who clean tables, staff who serve water, staff who serve drinks, and staff who do various food-related and buffet replenishment functions. But there is no one to ensure a table gets consistent (if any) service. So, you vie for attention with passing staff (say for water or a drink), who then wander off and forget your order. At Breakfast, stick to coffee – tea and milk is much too difficult… Bars are better and to be fair staff are by and large friendly. But they often run out of favourite popular included drinks which is met with a shrug and indifference. We tried three a la carte restaurants – but you need to book effectively on arrival if you are not a member. They provide welcome relief and additional quality to the clone buffets. Now to the paid services – shows and spas. NEVER EVER pay full price which is universally high. They do the demand management thing of wildly discounting if you haggle. The spa is luxurious but US$35 just to use pool, jacuzzi and steam room for a couple of hours is exorbitant and just inappropriate in a 5* hotel. I held out for US$20 and got it easily enough – wish I’d tried for US$10! Similarly, the CHIC show discounted from US$100 to $55 and maybe I might have got even cheaper on a slow night. And to be fair the theatre shows – albeit only 45 minutes – are good. My final gripe though is the leadership and management. They have loads of people in green shirts hassling you to sign up as members on the grounds they want you to move from guest to ‘family’. If you are allured by what is effectively a time share-style sales pitch, be prepared to waste literally hours and be passed from person to person for no good reason apart from creating local employment (which I have no problem with by the way). Its an incredibly dysfunctional family you will be joining! I advise you give a firm NO to the green shirts and stick with having a holiday as a guest. There are member services you won’t get…but at least you won’t be at the whim of this awful family and its leaders… Which brings me to the last complaint – the lies. We were due to check out at 4pm for a 1900 flight. We asked several days in a row for late check out at $10 per hour which we were happy to pay. But we were repeatedly told to come back on the day – first at 0900, then at 1000. On the day, we were told by a surly, couldn’t give a damn PAUL on reception, no late check outs by instruction of management. When asked to speak to management – unavailable. When asked to complain, made it almost impossible without a long process which would have taken until formal check out time at noon. The whole process was mendacious and disdainful – they absolutely will have known if they had multi-booking on check out day, many days in advance but told us we would have the late check out supplement option. The reality is our requested check out at 1500 would give plenty of time for repreparing the rooms for the BA flight arriving at 1730 so no earlier than a 1900 check in. And Paul admitted it – but just said he didn’t care – it was above his pay grade, and I was not allowed to speak to anyone at the right pay grade. A toxic end to overall a disappointing holiday sold as five star, but in reality probably 3* - good facilities, atrocious management and service. We know there are better resorts in the Caribbean and better 4* plus brands. If you trust this review, I will happily share further experience – and even if you don’t, treat Grand Palladium with the suspicion and scepticism it deserves. If you want a truly five-star experience, there will be far superior choices actually in better locations. Sorry – DR…
