Avoid BP Akumal, there are better choices.
We take a sun vacation annually with friends and we recommended Bahia Principe Akumal this year. We vacationed there in 2015 and had a good experience. This year was embarrassing. The facilities are very nice, but the customer experience not so good. We purchased swim up and requested at point of reservation (6 months prior) and at check-in (10 days prior) that they be adjacent. That didn’t happen and we were in different buildings. They moved us by day 3. The restaurant reservation system is terrible. You can book at time of check-in (10 days prior), but there wasn’t much available. We had several duplicates. We checked daily with guest services, but every restaurant was fully booked, yet there were a lot of empty tables every night. There is no flexibility in this system. We had one reservation at another BP resort that required a BP shuttle. The shuttle broke down, so we were late. We arrived first and were told that if our friends were not there within 15 minutes that they would not be served. I don’t expect perfection, but I expect a more or less hassle free vacation. When things go wrong, just be nice and get the problem resolved.

Fantastic holiday for my 60th birthday
Just checked out after 14 nights at this wonderful hotel. The room we had 4925 was close to the main lobby, main pool and sports bar. Initially I was disappointed as it had no view, but then glad as our balcony was very private. I’m glad we were at the Akumal this gave us access to all the other hotels in this complex and all the a la cartel restaurants. We ate a la carte most nights and they were very fine dining. I’ll be honest that I didn’t enjoy all the food, but it was an exceptional standard and so much nicer for our holiday than eating in the buffets. We booked the restaurants in advance via the Bahía app. This is a must as some people found booking when they arrived an issue. We tried all the hotels here for breakfast, but the smaller restaurant by the adult infinity pool was our favourite. The choices there are more limited but it’s quiet and calmer than the huge main buffets. The infinity pool is great and adults only, but there is also a quiet pool at the far end of the Tulum hotel which is also really nice. You need beach shoes to go in the sea by the infinity pool, but the beach by the main pool is sandy and shoes not needed. The staff and service is exceptional. Rooms are spotless and bar service round the pools really good. We went to the fiesta night and the show was good, but I did not like any of the food there. My tip would be eat first. They are going to upgrade the rooms we stayed in and this will be an improvement. Things like lack of plug sockets and slightly old fashioned furniture will be addressed I’m sure. All in all this hotel is fantastic xx

OUTSTANDING HOSPITALITY
We will definitely go back. They staff went above an beyond to make sure that everything was the best of the best. On the second day I had a reaction due to many food allergies, and I had a private chef the rest of the trip to make sure that it never happened again. You can also hop to 3 other resorts from here which is really cool. There hospitality is top notch. It will be hard to beat going else where. They were OUTSTANDING!!

Fantastic Holiday In The Winter Sun
There have been some mixed reviews for this hotel so I’m going to review from our experience! We are a couple in our 30s who went for 10 days of winter sun. We had an amazing time! The check in was quick and easy at the hotel where we were also offered a drink and warm flannel. We had checked in via the app 10 days before we left, this meant we were able to book A La carte restaurants for the duration of our stay before we got there. I can’t comment if we could have booked them when we got there but we wanted to make sure we had reservations. The Indian was lovely as was Alux and Dolce Vita. It’s really easy to get the buggy’s to the different hotels depending on what hotel you are staying / eating in. We upgraded our room on arrival and from what other people have commented this was definitely worth it. We went in the adult only block by Katok beach bar - you can also have breakfast and lunch in there aswell. The view is lovely from the restaurant over looking the beach, especially when the sun is coming up. The main restaurant buffet had lots of choice for breakfast and lunch. I would say the service was actually slightly better in the main restaurant and the food was always warm at breakfast (not always in katok but this is being picky!). The adults only infinity pool is stunning but did find people were putting towels down here so if you wanted a sun lounger and especially with a parasol you needed to put a towel down by 9am. There was always lots of loungers available around the main pool and some more parasols. We split our days between the 2 pools and also used the loungers on the beach which also have parasols but these are fixed. Lots of paddling in the sea and a bit of a swim but it didn’t really get deeper than your waist in the designated swimming area. The shallows are full of fish which you can see swimming all around you. A good lunch place was tikalito, which has a bit of a buffet but also you can order freshly cooked food from the iPads (the taco was really good). We found the whole resort to be really clean and the maids and mini bar guys were great. All staff were really friendly always greeting you with an hola. Lots of choice for drinks including cocktails and the wine was actually ok. My partner wasn’t a massive fan of the draft beer but was drinkable and the odd place where they do the cans (and in the mini bar) was much better. We took American dollar bills to tip every now and again. Just a dollar for drinks (but not every time) and left a small tip after the A la carte meal. (We saw lots of Americans and Canadians tipping big but we found we didn’t need to) Just a note to say hotels Akumul and Tulum are beachfront. Hotel Coba is just behind these and then Sian Kaan is across the road further away and more in the jungle. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and had a fantastic time.
