A tale of Couples Swept Away, Jamaica

Ah, my tale of Couples Swept Away in Negril, Jamaica, is one peppered with both island charm and the realities of resort life. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed at the reception desk, swiftly assigned to our immaculately clean room. The initial impression? A rustic Jamaican flair, evident through shutters instead of windows—a touch of local flavor that gave our accommodation a "glamping" vibe. Despite the unconventional setup, we embraced it as part of our quest for a genuine Jamaican experience. However, as night fell, so did the truth about those shutters. The lively critters of the vicinity and the nearby Norman Manley Blvd created a cacophony that disrupted our tranquility. The resort, elongated yet narrow, amplified the sounds from the road up to three buildings away from the shore. The room itself, though dated, offered comfort with a cozy bed, adequate bathroom facilities, and a delightful terrace adorned with a hammock and sofa—a sanctuary during rainy spells. Exploring the resort independently revealed its layout and amenities. Dining experiences varied; Patois Patio, while closed for a private event, led us to the Palms dining room, where a la carte offerings satisfied our palates amidst a somewhat rushed service atmosphere. Buffet nights were a personal favorite, offering a wider culinary selection complemented by local entertainment. Swimming options included two pools, unfortunately minus the Jacuzzi experiences due to closure. Opting for the beach proved a wiser choice—the lifeguarded expanse boasting calm, clear waters and meticulously maintained shores. Water sports, including glass-bottom boat rides and kayaking, added to the seaside allure, guided by enthusiastic staff. A coffee shop adjacent to the lobby catered from dawn till dusk, while obligatory gift shops beckoned with pricey treasures. Late-night cravings found solace at Patois Patio's extended hours, though snack options outside these times required a trek. Yet, amidst the allure, one gripe persisted: noise. Ongoing room refurbishments echoed jackhammer symphonies from midday into late afternoon, disrupting patio retreats. Coupled with the persistent hum from the main road, tranquility was occasionally fleeting. In summation, Couples Swept Away offers a mixed bag of Jamaican authenticity and resort conveniences. While setbacks like noise and dated accommodations temper the experience, the warmth of the staff, the allure of the beach, and the cultural flavors in dining provide ample compensation for those seeking a laid-back Caribbean escape. Yours in tales of sun, sea, and shuttered windows,

    10 year anniversary trip

We chose this resort to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. First trip to Jamaica. Food - great ! I was very happy with the food options but bought snacks in the gift shop for in our room. We found the food to be very good but portion sizes were on the smaller side for us. Good selection of entree at all restaurants . Beach - fantastic! Beautiful and well kept. They clean and rake it every day. We took a walk everyday on the beach. Room- we were right on the beach by the bar. Perfect view of the ocean and the balcony was great. Room was large and bed was comfortable. Only bad thing was our room service request for breakfast and mini bar was not picked up for 2 days. Housekeeping did great with daily cleaning. Staff - Good. Some were friendlier than others but overall pleasant. Spa - we got a couples massage and I got a facial which was the best I've ever had !! Highly recommend. Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return !

    Tired Resort

We returned to Couples Swept Away after our first trip in 2018 and were surprised at the condition of the resort. It is tired and in much need of repairs, sprucing up and upgrades. There were quite a few issues - The hot tub at the main pool had jets that worked on one side only. Patois was closed daily for breakfast and lunch, and some nights for dinner. Leaving the Palms the only option for a sit-down breakfast and lunch. The time we chose to eat at Scotch Bonnet they were out of most items. Beach towels were not available after 2pm by the main pool, we were told to go to the towel hut by water sports by the 3 employees hanging out at the towel hut. Drinking glasses were not available in the room. For a 5-star resort you expect better. Most of the staff were wonderful, kind and engaging. The grounds and beach are beautiful.

    Black and overlooked!

My husband and I researched and fell in love with the idea of spending our Anniversary at CSA. So last year we booked. First, I am not the kind looking for hidden discrimination. I love Jamaica and have travelled several times even as a single woman. The check in is where it started. We were overlooked until I had to speak up. The overlooking never ended. I felt overlooked and found myself having to say, "excuse me, I was next all the time." Which kept me on edge (opposite of vacation). This was at the beach bar and at the restaurant Patios. One morning I was walking past a worker who was performing maintenance outside on one of the buildings. I was smiling, he asked my why was I smiling in a way that just was not kind. I am not thin skinned or sensitive and being well travelled I have never felt like I wanted to end my trip like I did while visiting this place. The vegan restaurant and staff were great! Even had my husband eating there! The Palm Buffet was great as well. The Aquatics staff were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Also, loved the massage class! I don't think I will revisit CSA. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

    Not good

We saved all year and researched reviews and hotels We chose couples as it was a 5 star and looked beautiful Having stayed at a 5 Star resort the previous year in dom republic Couples was not even in the same league as this hotel, definitely not a 5 star more like a 3 star hotel Grounds need a lot of work doing to them as do the rooms Our room was supposedly an refurbished room,I would be asking for a refund from the people that done it We were there during the hurricane so understood that services would be limited during this time The manager Karen was amazing and always on hand for help Some staff were lovely other not so and need help with the attitude. Food was ok but I wouldn’t say amazing, breakfast was the only meal they got right. Beach is beautiful, plenty of sunbeds and shaded areas. Maid service for our room wasn’t the best,my wife made the bed more often than not. All in all a not very good holiday which was a shame considering the cost. Would definitely not return to this hotel
