Terrific Surprise Getaway
JESICCA A.
Jun 20 2017
Took my soon to be husband on a surprise getaway. Didn't want the big city environment so chose resort in rainforest, perfect choice! Hotel was beutiful and concierge couldn't be more helpful! Food and drinks were very overpriced but a short drive away we were able to enjoy local cuisine and drinks at better prices.

The Wyndham Rio Mar is a beautiful hotel and property. I would've preferred a beach view. 2 displeasures: Shimas Restaurant, Sunday evening, petite blonde hostess and the fellow did not greet me pleasantly, nor did they wish good evening upon leaving; the petite blonde was very friendly with two of the waiters, visiting and holding hands. The second issue is that while Freddie at the Excursion desk seems like a pleasant fellow, it was a challenge for me to schedule excursions; I don't know if this was because I was solo? Travelers do not spend money and come a long distance to be told they cannot have the tours they are interested in. I was not able to get tour to Old San Juan at all, had to pay $150 plus tips RT. Staff kept telling me to rent car; I was not interested in navigating the highways by myself. Bring your smart phone and have an Uber account. With previous trips with Apple, I had no problem getting tours. Tours in Puerto Rico very expensive as well, more so than other destinations.

The Wyndham Rio Mar is a nice hotel, but is more like a typical mainland American hotel than a Caribbean resort hotel. Newly renovated spaces are nice/modern; unrenovated spaces are quite dated. Fitness center is a dump.

BEYOND FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY!

to whom it may concern: I have had 2 great experiences with apple vacations in the past!however I will never again use your services! we paid for transfer to and from the airport (70$, ONE WAY) HOWEVER WE DID NOT RECIEVE ANYTHING. WE WAITED FOR OVER AN HOUR UPON ARRIVAL! no one knew anything about apple no reps. nothing! I called the hotel repeatedly, no one knew who apple was who was working with them anything! we spent an incredible amount of time and energy to find a shuttle that was going to another hotel to take us to ours(another 30 minutes out of our way!the hotel was booked(you did one thing right) however I spent several hours trying to get transfer back to the airport neither rico nor dragonfly could help us. how damn frustrating my family is at the pool and again I'm in line. I used over 30 $ in phone service, being put on hold or disconnected. never again. we finally got a shuttle and beth from travelworld has sent you this bill. I am so disappointed in your service I expect to totally reimbursed! I do know many people and have already talked my nephew from using your services on his honeymoon.

Wyndam Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico

Jul 23 2014
I gave this hotel a fair rating at best for several reasons. First off, it was under renovation and there were interruptions in water, elevators and such. The room was either too hot or too cold. The air conditioning ran loud and could not be adjusted easily hence it would either run continuously making the room a meat locker or if the temperature was adjusted the room was too hot. The restaurants did not open all day hence food selection was limited especially lunch. This was limited to hamburgers, salads, wings. Not a lot of variety. Service was slow and not always cordial. The help spoke Spanish among themselves and at times seemingly ignored the guests to carry on a personal conversation. This was annoying. It almost seemed to me that if you did not speak Spanish you were treated as a second class citizen. Since Wyndam took over for Westin the emphasis was on sales of condo space and not on service. I was generally disappointed with the hotel. There was not a lot to do especially if you had children. We didn't so that was not so much a problem. I would not go back there unless they really increase the number of restaurants and activities especially in the entertainment area.

Food Good but Expensive

My main issue was that it was very expensive to eat there. Breakfast for $24 was sa bit extreme. The food quality was excellent, but due to the fact that transportation is also very expensive, you are forced to pay a lot for food. There should be better options.

The positives.... very secure location (within a gated community), very friendly and helpful staff, superb beach (no rocks, clean sand, umbrellas/chairs, not crowed at all, walk for almost a mile north or south..... pools were great and clean, not crowded. The cons: hotel restaurants are expensive and the food is only average at best, room was a little musty but very clean, only problem was thin walls and somewhat noisy plumbing in adjoining rooms. Overall though, this place is excellent....if you actually enjoy a great beach I couldn't recommend this one enough, and any minor problems we had with the food or room noise was much more than made up by that beach, the other amenities and the quality of the staff.

Room was tired. Needed freshening up. Ask for updated room when making a reservation. Beach was excellent but could have been maintained better. First concierge was outstanding and helpful. Rest of the concierge staff was not as knowledgable. We only ate at the pool grill. Rest of the time we ate off site.

We travel to many resorts and just back from Wyndham's Rio Grand----had to be one of our most special times at any resort. The hotel is grand and been brought back from Maria --the rooms are so bright and views spectacular ---the staff treated us like royalty and paid attention to make sure our visit was unforgettable. Pools are kept perfectly clear and towels and refreshments readily available. The beach is pristine and a short walk from the hotel. if you want a vacation that will give you the ultimate escape from the daily grind you will never forget a week at this resort. For full disclosure, I am not affiliated or have any financial ties to Wyndham--I just had such a great travel experience at this resort I wanted to share with others who may want to stay there. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL RESORT - Amazing!

We stayed in the Margaritaville portion of Wyndham Rio Mar for two weeks. It was absolutely amazing! I am a GM at another Wyndham property and was here on vacation. The staff could not be friendlier and more accommodating. Angela at the front desk was gracious, friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and made our first impression a great one. Concierge people were very helpful whenever we had questions or needed a ride to the grocery store. The rooms have a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, cooktop and all dishes and utensils needed. You can go to Selectos grocery store, just a few minutes away, to stock up on groceries if you want to save some money. The resort food is very good but somewhat expensive. Drinks are $12 and up per drink. I had a glass of wine one night in the lobby bar and it was $16 for less than a half a glass. With that said, those prices are in keeping with other resorts of the same type. I cannot say enough about the staff at Rio Mar - every single employee, no matter what position they had or what they were doing, greeted us with a smile and a hello and always asked if there was anything we needed. The grounds, the beach, the pools, are all absolutely beautiful. We ate in Roots restaurant several times. The food and drinks were always wonderful with one exception - one night I ordered a glass of merlot and it came and it was freezing cold! The waiter told me the bottle was in the refrigerator. Merlot and red wine is always served at room temperature and never put in the refrigerator, so I just asked for a different kind of red wine and he brought it and it was fine. I would ask management to please tell the staff at Roots not to put the merlot in the refrigerator. Rio, who sang in the lobby bar was absolutely wonderful - could not get enough of his singing. The casino was very nice; a lot of fun! One note in the casino - my dad was playing blackjack one night and right in the middle of the game, the floor manager asked him to change his seat so another person could sit where he was sitting. Anyone who has knowledge of a blackjack table in a casino knows you never make someone change their seat, especially not in the middle of a game or that affects the distribution of the cards. When that was explained to the floor manager, he didn't seem to get it, so it effectively ended my dad's game, which was unfortunate. Otherwise, the casino was very nice and we had fun there. The gift shop had nice items; it would be nice to see some Margaritaville items in it too. Overall, it is an amazing, beautiful place and we look forward to going back again!

I was wowed. I normally never write a review however I had to for this fascinating resort. Wyndham Grand Rio Mar PR from the moment we arrived the staff where extremely pleasant from the valet to check in and restaurants. I would highly recommend this beautiful resort which by the way is in a perfect beautiful beach location. I stayed in the ocean view suit and it was GORGEOUS! Being in this resort, you could have never told me that 9 months ago they had faced a tragedy. #prselevanta

Some Issues - Wyndham Should Communicate Them Before Booking
TripReview0123, New York City, New York
Tue Apr 17 13:22:09 EDT 2018
Good: Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The beach is very pretty, and all of the pools areas were re-opened and very nice. It's close to the rainforest, and also very close to activities in Fajardo like the biobay kayaking. While gorgeous, the beach did have severe riptide warnings up for our entire stay - the hotel rep on the beach recommended that you drive to Luquillo if you really wanted to swim safely. If i had younger kids that wanted to swim in the ocean, I would consider this when booking this hotel. Bad: 1) Wyndham should let you know before booking that only two of their restaurants are running - for most meals you have one choice. I definitely recommend that you rent a car to drive to activities, and also so you can find better and less expensive food choices. I would definitely recommend the kioskos near Luquillo, just a ten minute drive. There are also plenty of roadside restaurants, and a bakery nearby. (You're going to want to find it - a large black coffee, large latte and two apples cost over $15 at the hotel cafe). 2) We had a "rainforest view" room at the front of the hotel, over the valet parking area. If we opened the door to our balcony, our room filled up with exhaust fumes in minutes -- it looks like the hotel has several generators running underneath the front parking area. I don't know if it was a quirk of our room's location - but this is something that the hotel should tell you about. We couldn't really use the balcony or open the door during our stay. Also, if you like afternoon naps - beware of the "rainforest view" - the hotel keeps two loud parrots in the valet area that are pretty loud during the day. 3) The TVs don't work well. A few channels come in ok, but most flicker in and out constantly. We tried to watch a playoff game this way and it was just painful. It took two days for them to send a repairman to the room, and he told us that 90% of the hotel has this problem and that a lot of people were complaining. There was nothing he could do to fix it. Again, this may not be a dealbreaker, but the hotel should let you know this stuff before you book.
