Fantastic Vacation
JOSEPH V.
Jun 13 2016
Truly a magical resort. From the beautiful scenery to the very warm pools. Our room was clean and we were well taken care off. The staff at the breakfast buffet were very attentive and also helpful with knowledge of local places to visit (like the wonderful beach up the coast to the very best restuarants to visit. I would (and have) recommend this resort to any who are interested in taking a fantastic vacation. Jan V of Lancaster, CA

I'm so glad we chose to stay at the Marriot in waikaloa. The moment I walked in I felt relaxed and the open air lobby made me feel instantly in paradise. The service was amazing from everyone, especially the valet who saved us by offering beach towels when we left the resort. Everything at the hotel was clean And well kept. My favorite part about the resort was the beach!! It's one of the few sandy beaches on the island and it was just a 4 minute walk from Our room! We were able to leave all our belongings safely in our room and go out to snorkel in the beautiful reef which was just 30 ft in from shore! Amazing! Also, they have a heated pool which made me very happy! Only challenge was the high price of food but that's what you get at a fancy resort and at least the restaurant offer specials during the week. The breakfast buffet was a good value. Enjoy!!!

The hotel is in a beautiful location and has mostly great facilities. The grounds are charming and the staff welcoming. The hotel is in a complex with other hotels, golf facilities and some strip malls. Do your research on dining options. If you do not like what's in the complex you are looking at a 20-30 minute drive, which at night on very dark roads may not be what you want. Check the many crosses and memorials on the roadside.

We really loved this hotel! Our room was very nice and we really appreciated the beach amenities with the paddleboards, glass bottom boatn and snorkeling. We loved the Lava Lava Beach Club at sunset and it so fun that it was so close. Very close to shopping also!

Wonderful resort. Only negative was that the restaurant prices were out-of-control. However, reasonable priced restaurants were within walking distance.

Not a nice beach

I struggled with booking this hotel but finally decided to give it a try. Was extremely disappointed by the beach here and after a few days moved to a different hotel. The beach is shared with many neighboring timeshares and cottages - it is very narrow with zero shade unless you pay for covered chairs, which are pricey. Same problem with the pool area - very few umbrellas and not enough trees. Other than that, the hotel is nice - newly decorated rooms and beautiful lobby. The staff were hit or miss, we never received our shelll lei greeting. Not really a what I would call a resort - more just a nice hotel near the beach.

Nice stay, some minor gripes

We generally loved the pool area, beach, rooms and amenities provided by the hotel. The rooms were nice, but the beds (two queens) a bit tight for a family of four. The kids loved doing the slide race with the attendant timing their speed. The variety of hot tubs and pools is really nice. As others have indicated the pool seat real estate gets occupied early in the day (a common issue in many resorts) and there is little shaded area later in the day. The pool service/towels etc was great and the staff super friendly. The noise levels at night were variable, loud music from the restaurant area at 4AM(?) one night and loud spring-break guests another night caused some interrupted sleep. The huge triathlon event on the beach off the hotel property, was a bit annoying but I realize that this is out of the hotel management's control. Not a very relaxing environment though. We managed to ignore the time share pushiness, though did see a blinking light on the phone and received an "amazing" offer slid under the door. Half of the items on the resort fee "benefits" card seem to be hooks to get you to go to the vacation club for their time share sales push. The front desk staff was generally very friendly, but on various occasions seemed to be missing entirely. The food in the restaurant was good but expensive. Service was hit or miss. The first night our waiters were very courteous and food served promptly, the second time our reservation was not registered, it took 55 minutes to get the food served and the waitress was very lukewarm. The quality of the food however was consistently great! The breakfast was good, but $30 per person was definitely excessive. Two nights the local draft beer (Longboard) was not available which was odd. It was great to have at least some options - supermarket and Starbucks - nearby so we could find some more reasonably priced food. The pool area is open so outsiders can walk in. On one occasion my wife observed a non-guest sitting down next to guest items, seemingly casing the setup. Nothing was stolen at that point but it made us aware not to leave anything of value in the pool area. The walk along the beach past Lava Lava is really nice, though some people seem to have set up residence in the vegetation. As others have mentioned it is odd that the beach area is closed after 7PM, but maybe that's for safety reasons? Lastly I will echo the numerous complaints about the resort fee, $30 + tax without providing anything of value, is just not cool.

Just came for the beach

Fun visit, beautiful white sand, but was still quite rocky. Water was warm, but did get quite choppy as the afternoon set in. The view was fantastic. Can rent fun items like water bike or boats. Some beach shade which is nice.

All of the staff at this hotel were excellent - especially the concierge and front desk. The room was small but clean and comfortable. It was nice to have a refrigerator and coffee maker but we really missed not having a microwave. We had a small balcony with a slight view of the ocean which we used and enjoyed. I see others have complained that the pools were too warm, but I loved them. I despise getting into frigid pools. These were perfect. And one of the hot tubs had the most divine, powerful jets. It nearly blasted my suit off of me which was perfect! We ordered two piña coladas while at the pool. We wouldn't do that again. They were $15 each and weren't any good. If they had been more reasonably priced and had actually tasted good, we would have ordered many of them because laying by the pool was lovely. It was quite difficult to keep our towels on the reclining chairs though so you might bring something to secure them. Perhaps it was just an especially windy week when we were there. The birds were a complete nuisance while trying to eat breakfast in the restaurant (which was not really worth the cost). The beach area was large and lovely. You can walk all the way down to the Hilton, which is a lovely walk and shouldn't be missed (wear shoes though because you are walking over lava rock for much of the way). You can walk the other way and have a meal/drink at Lava Lava - also fun. We snorkeled right off of the beach and saw lots of beautiful fish. We saw whales leaping out of the water on 2 occasions. They were pretty far out in the ocean but you could definitely tell what they were. There are two negatives where the beach is concerned. First, it's a ways out from the hotel, so it doesn't really feel like a "beach front" property. And second, you can not access the beach after 7 pm. I suppose it is for safety reasons, but we like to walk or sit on the beach at night and listen to the waves. But access is blocked. This property does seem to have the largest, nicest beach around so if that is what you are looking for, then you will likely be happy. The Hilton down the street is a vast, beautiful resort that is ideal for walking around. They also have an ocean-fed, secure swimming area where you can safely snorkel and see sea turtles and fish. We spent one day doing that and thoroughly enjoyed it. We rented our snorkeling gear at the Marriott and walked down to the Hilton. (we bought lunch there so I feel like we contributed to the Hilton!) Finally, the Marriott is right across the street from the Kings' shopping area and just a short way down from the Queens' Market place. We enjoyed shopping at both.

This is a well located resort. Great pools and beach. Great staff. We didn't spend too much time at the resort because it was our first time on the Big Island. Walk the beach to the Lava Lava bar for music and a sunset view.
