Great Location & Facilities - Room 3162 P Tower

Spent 6 nights here for vacation. Check in was fast/easy since we arrived around 8pm. Room had view of Diamond Head and ocean, empty fridge (amen!), and the resort fee included WiFi, safe, one MaiTai a day, free calls to mainland, two papers daily, towels, and shopping discounts in hotel complex so it was a good value unlike resort fees I have been forced to pay elsewhere. VIP status in Marriott also included free buffet breakfast. Hawaiian papaya and pineapple were delicious. Omlette guy was fast and friendly. Florence, our waitress, was 78 years young and a real local character - lots of good advice about things to see and do. Only downer - bathroom was very cramped and you could hear elevators from our room without AC fan running all the time. If you are afraid of heights, the balconies are tiny...do not go outside. Also watch the sliding door - when you leave it open the pigeons stop into your room. Two pools, plenty of staff, good maid service. Things to do: Aqarium was worth a visit - every rare fish in the South Pacific all in one place, and no snorkeling required. Great Audio Tour is free. Chinatown for day/lunch visit for Char Siu roast pork quick lunch. Look for places with BBQ on display in window. Dim Sum - Tai Pan in the Chinatown Cultural Center for lunch. Go late and watch locals swarm to pick up overstocked dim sum at a discount. Local chow in Waikiki: Fatty's Kitchen at back side of Hawaiian Marketplace next to Sheraton Princes Kaulani - it's a joint and everyone local eats there. Bring cash and a good appetite, and opt for soemthing freshly prepared to order vs. the steam table food. Everything is cooked to order. For $10 you can have a great lunch with hot tea. Leis - Lin's Lei shop in chinatown beat everyone else's prices. If you take the plastic box and put a paper towel in it, store your lei in the fridge every night and it will last for 3 -4 days. Waikiki Trolley hop on hop off for 2 days - fun, easy to do. We did the Green and Red loop tours Pier 38/commercial fishing pier and Nico's at the Pier for a tasty snapping fresh seafood lunch Ono Hawaiian food for lunch - tasty, huge portions, take cash. Also visit the bric a brac/Peggy's next door for souvenirs. Best budget souvenirs: Foodland grocery store - main section. Hawaiian foods and candy at great prices to take home to friends/family. Use the local public bus service - $2.50 each way to go anywhere on the island. Everyone rides the bus - we met people from Micronesia, Samoa, locals of all variety. Most friendly and helpful. Around Waikiki the homeless population has grown and they are more aggressive and visible than in the past. Use common sense when going out to the beach: lock up valuables in hotel safe, take room key, water, sunscreen and few dollars to buy a snack if you need one, or enough cash for a catamaran ride only. At night be mindful of wallets/purses when walking Kalakau Avenue and working around the crowds watching singers and performers.
