Great Little Place but Depends What You are Looking For

We just returned from the Cayena Beach and had a fantastic vacation. Your view of the place will depend a lot on what is really important to you in a vacation. If what you are looking for is a quiet, relaxing place with a beautiful beach, no crowds around the pool, no fights for chairs, and to eat and sleep with the sounds of the ocean, this place may be for you... but if your idea of the perfect holiday is a luxury suite, beautiful amenities and a top end gourmet experience, it's probably not for you. The Cayena Beach is really just the VIP section of the VIK Arena Blanca (some tour operators sell it as a separate resort, some as an upgrade). Guests have access to the amenities of the Arena Blanca, which has about 450 rooms and more amenities/food options/entertainment (and addresses some of the trade offs you need to make to stay at a small resort), but the "regular" Arena guests do not have access to Cayena Beach, so Cayena Beach guests have their own quiet pool, uncrowded beach and beach/pool side restaurant, as well as more personal service. Here's a bit more detail (I hope it's helpful): ROOMS: Only about a dozen of the rooms have been renovated, although I was told there are plans to upgrade the rest over time, so many of the rooms are pretty dated. Ours as a non-renovated room. The beds were comfortable, although a bit small. The rom was a good size, although the toilet area was a bit cramped. We had nice balconies with an ocean view from one and pool view from the other. We loved being close to the ocean. Only real issues were that the air conditioning broke down for three nights - a central issue that they were struggling to fix - and our shower broke the last night. These little issues were certainly worth the trade off for being so close to the beach at such a reasonable price. FOOD: The restaurant at the Cayena Beach serves only breakfast and dinner so you need to eat dinners at the Arena Blanca. Too bad because the Cayena restaurant was by far the best. Lunches in particular were great. Breakfast buffet was a bit limited (the trade off of a small place) but the omelette station was very good. The Arena Blanca restaurants were pretty mediocre and the buffet was okay. Certainly not on the level many resorts (but, let's face it, the Arena is a budget option - you are not paying for Sandals, Iberostar or other higher end chains). It was a bit weird that men needed to wear long pants (other than for the buffet) at dinner, given that the Arena is not remotely high end, but that's a pet peeve of mine. Worst thing was the wine... the stuff in the all-inclusive was undrinkable (and I am no wine snob). The food/wine were really the reason I have to say 4 rather than 5 stars. BEACH: Lots of chairs. No crowds. Beautiful beach. Special mention needs to be made of the resorts response to a seaweed issue. On our second last day, a massive seaweed island washed ashore in the late afternoon and covered the beach for kilometres. The resort dealt with it extremely well and the beach was in perfect shape by lunch time the next day. Most other resorts could not say the same thing. They really went the extra mile to clean the place up. POOL: Nice pool beside the restaurant. Nothing fancy but very nice. Not crowded. Close to the beach. SERVICE: Generally very good. Better in the Cayena Beach area than at dinner in the Arena. OTHER: No entertainment in the Cayena section, but we like it quiet. The Arena section has some but we can't comment. Internet was a bit spotty but who cares. This place had the things that were most important to us and we loved our stay. Don't expect great dinners or good wine but I would highly recommend the Cayena Beach for a laid back break.

Great Personal Service from this Resort

We spent the first week of October here after the hurricane Maria and almost everything was operating as they told me over the phone and they were busy painting and fixing things while we were there. It is all-inclusive and had plenty of good food choices. We had some minor issues with our room and we were graciously moved to one of their renovated rooms, although both rooms were nice. One thing I wasn't prepared for was long pants. Yeah, you need to wear long pants in their two sit-down restaurants. I was not real happy about that. We are on vacation in the Caribbean, why would I need long pants! So i mentioned that to my new best friend there - Barbara! - Without asking (only complaining) a pair of long pants showed up in my room the next day. A couple sizes too small, but worked just fine under my untucked shirt for me for an hour a day. They do have the mega buffet restaurant that doesn't require long pants btw, The thing we ended up liking the most was the "El Cano" restaurant & bar next to the small pool. El Cano and the small pool are only for the Cayena Beach Resort guests. The Cayena Beach resort is part of the much larger VIK hotel, so you get super personalized service, but also have a amenities of a large hotel/resort as well. What could be better? No long pants for dinner! and both the included red and white wines at the sit down restaurants are bad. The white is bearable, but the red is just terrible. I watched how many time the red wine glasses were either left on the table full or the waiter took it back - probably 80-90% of the time. Whats the best? Well Barbara of course, and all the staff at the El Cano. The ocean front view from our room was super too. Then I liked that hammock out by the beach as well. Lots of volleyball with worldwide competitors. Too bad I got these giant blisters on my feet that shut that down for me though.

This is our third trip to the Cayena Beach club - The club is the perfect spot if you are looking for personalized service while on vacation. The club staff is absolutely the best you will find! Carlos, Jocelyn, Barbara and everyone at this resort goes out of their way to make you feel at home. Beach area is private, they will book any excursions from the office, the VIP dining is crazy good - (breakfast and Lunch) dinner at one of the five restaurants or buffet is also very good. Can not stress the top notch service from all the staff. We will be back year after year! The only issue we had was with the photo service from Sunshine Pictures, they are very unprofessional, rude and in my opinion should be replaced.

Always a pleasure to return "home" to see all the great people. They are like second family to us. They always have a smile and make the trip great. I've never had a complaint about the food. Always nice to meet new people and reconnect with people you have previously met. Won't find a friendlier staff or more relaxing vacation. There is also plenty to do if you aren't the sitting around type. Can't wait to return. Miss it the moment I leave.
