Nice place to relax

We visited this hotel with our two pre-teens for March break. Very glad we were at the Cayena and not the other bigger side of the Arena Blanca. With only 47 rooms on the Cayena side it was exactly what we wanted. The Cayena side has its own restaurant for breakfast and lunch which very adequate and had some amazing views of the ocean. For dinner you will have to go to the other side. It is ok. There is enough to choose from. We did become tired of resort food before the end of our 7 night trip. There is also a private pool and private beach section with great loungers, with no need to reserve early in the morning. As for the rooms, they were all we needed. The kids each had their own bed. The wife and I took the big pull out couch bed with the some what privacy door/curtain. The pull out bed is not comfortable at all. We had them add two twin mattresses to the top of the pull out and make it up as a king. This worked great for us. We had a third floor and had an amazing view of the ocean from the room. If you are looking for a nice quiet relaxing vacation this hotel will do. No activities people bugging you but you will be bugged to take a time share sit down. I do recommend you take the free catamaran tour for the Cayena side. We had 10 people on board. It was great. This is not a party hotel. Very quiet. Only a few families on this side. It was completely different on the other side. Felt busy and loud over there couldn't wait to get back to our side when we ventured over there. More>

Everything We Hoped For

I know everyone says they never write reviews but I really do not unless the experience was exceptional. My family and I stayed at the Cayena Beach Club/Vik Hotel for two weeks and our experience was beyond our wildest dreams. Mealtime was a time all four of us looked forward to. We ate at three of the restaurants and they were all fantastic but we ate 80% of our meals at the buffet because everything was so fresh and delicious. There was a huge variety of foods and the service providers were very accommodating to my daughter who I would identify as a "selective eater". There were two servers who took very good care of us, Elias and Carlos. We would look forward to seeing them each day. The rooms were beautiful, traditional sound proof and very well maintained. The employees work very hard to make your experience pleasurable. We stayed on the Cayena side of the resort but had access to both properties. I know Wifi access is important for travelers and we did not use it very much because we were on the go so much but when we did want to access it there was never a problem. When we asked our girls (ages 11 and 12) what stood out for them the most they both identified the people who work there without a doubt. It was obvious to us that the people who worked at the Cayena and the VIK have a genuine love of children. By the end of our two weeks they knew many of the employees by name and shared hugs or high fives. Pasquel always made my younger daughter, who is shy, feel very special. Antonio and Newton at the Cayena bar made special drinks for them and always served them quickly and pleasantly.....adding an extra touch each time with a fancy glass or special fruit. What stood out for my husband and I were the Monday night shows on the Cayena side. The food was AMAZING and the talent was out of this world. Eziquel was the MC each night and he was funny, inclusive (speaking at least four languages) and engaged the audience. He and Melanie both worked in the reception area during the day and always met you with a huge smile. Finally, Barbara manages the property and to put it quite simply, she is one of the kindest people we have ever met. If you decide on this property for a vacation you would not be disappointed. It truly was the best time of our lives. More>

Pretty good but not great

The room was clean, the weather was excellent, the food was very average. The people were friendly. But there is no real going off the grounds on your own. It feels like a colony experience. On the way there are two gateways guarded with folks with guns. Almost all the guests were white. Almost all the service folks are black. It's an extremely segregated culture. The level of poverty outside the gates of the resort is intense. Although, not a surprise, this was very disconcerting to me. All of this is taken for granted by the return visitors. This attitude also seemed strange to me. More>

Beach Visit

Returned for a short visit to our home resort. The main strengths of the resort are the really nice people here at the Beach Club. The small restaurant , local pool, local bar, and the very close proximity to the Beach are without comparison. Now this is a three star hotel, as there are still a few items that need improvement. The beds still could use upgrade, as they do not compare to five star hotel beds, the shower stall is poorly designed and once a minor flood down the hallway occurred because of the poor design. Shower curtains are wya out of style. The A/C works sporadically. The food at the attached VIK hasn't really improved, they overcook the meat all the time. Service at the buffet and other a la carte restaurants is very slow, it seems that they are understaffed, perhaps. Otherwise, if you know what to expect, and love the beach then this is a pretty nice place to stay. Still need better beds though.......one day i hope. Got to talk to their Finance Department! More>

Expensive upgrade not worth the money

We upgraded to this hotel at considerable extra cost, and what a disappointment. The restaurant within the upgraded section was open for breakfast and lunch, which were quite good, but only opened twice a week for suppers. The restaurants in the main part were poor. The buffet food looked like it had been in the warming trays for 2 hours even if you were there right at opening. There were some made to order stations around the perimeter of the buffet that were passable. If you are expecting to get served with water, soft drinks, red or white wine or beer in the buffet, you are In for a surprise, as it is a serve yourself set up. Any cocktails were unavailable in not only the buffet but 3 out of 4 of the a la cartes. The Italian a la carte was interesting for the seating - green plastic chairs that most of us have around a BBQ pit either in white or green, not the most comfortable to sit on for a full meal. A lot of spirits were extra, which we have encountered before, but usually a comparable alternative is included within the all inclusive. Not so if you are looking for some Baileys with your coffee, purchasable at $7US a shot! The rooms are dated, the beds hard - no box spring, just a hard mattress on wooden slats. The bathrooms are small, with a really weird configuration for the separate toilet. Took me 5 days to get a facecloth in the room, and then only got one because friends in a neighbouring room had a spare one. No coffee maker in the room, but instant coffee and a kettle. Can't remember ever being at a hotel where there is no coffee maker. So now for the few positives, the beach and recliners were lovely. Grounds are well kept. Notable mentions to staff, Joselin, Breidy, Elias, Junior, Oscar the omelet chef and the head chef at the Encana restaurant. In the reception, Melanie was a tremendous help when we could not get in to our safe, and had been hung up on from the reception in the main resort, with no suggestion for help offered. The reception in the Cayena Beach is only open from 8-5pm, and they are great when they are there. This upgraded area caters to time share owners and they often meet up with a bunch of friends they have made over the years, and are welcomed warmly by staff who recognize them, sadly, overall this is not the case for the purchaser of an upgrade for an all inclusive holiday.mwould not revisit this hotel, but would return to the Dominican.
