The second day we were there, we were checking on activities for the week. Our son left our camera on the desk and a worker walk up hid it in front of her and tried to walk away. The staff at this hotel is unbelievably friendly and awesome! Between them and the clean rooms, I would def go back. The food is insanely priced, but probably on par for resorts. It's ridiculous that they don't have a shuttle from the airport for this place. The adventure options were fantastic .. More>

The Turtle Bay Resort is a spectacular way to experience the North Shore of Oahu. We made the decision to avoid Honolulu and Waikiki and head north straight from the airport, and we did not regret it for a second. The lobby area is spacious and grand, and the check in staff were delightful as were the valets. The parking was a little confusing, in that you can drive all the way up to the lobby area, dump your luggage, and then drive back to the parking lot (which was quite packed, but there will always be a park as long as you're willing to walk a bit). The rooms are a similar size to a large apartment. We had an Ocean view room, so the big glass doors slid open to stunning views of the water and its surrounds. There were also several weddings at sunset which were quite beautiful to watch. In terms of activities, the resort has everything (but most at a price). You can have an hour of free snorkeling per day, which we used every day that we were there. We also made good use of the state of the art fitness centre, as well as the pool facilities. Unfortunately the beaches which are walking distance east of the resort beaches, which seem so open and great from the resort, are not very user friendly when you get out there because of rocks under the water. We hired boogieboards for $14 for the whole day, and drove the 10min to Pounders Beach, which is known as the best place on the island. It was like nothing I have ever experienced, even coming from Australia. The conditions were awesome. Back to the resort. We took advantage of the tennis courts, which ended up costing us about $20 per hour for balls/racquets (court hire is free). Rebound ace surface was fun to play on. We found the golf to be a little bit out of our price range, and everyone seemed to be taking it pretty seriously, so we didn't want to be the ones holding everyone up. The happy hours at Hang Ten Bar and Surfer Bar are great, as are the cultural activities that happen at sundown at Hang Ten (fire twirling etc). I really appreciated the opportunity to engage in some island culture. Having said all that, undoubtedly the highlight at Turtle Bay for us was the Bacon Blue Cheese Burger from Surfer Bar. Oh. My. Gosh. Heaven on earth. I cannot wait to get back to Hawaii. And when I do, i'm not going to waste my time looking around Honolulu or Waikiki or any other resort for that matter. Excellence, plain and simple.
