Well. I don’t no where to start. The place was beautiful and we checked in and were given a wonderful suite. The property is gorgeous with multiple pools. The dining was good. However not great. We did have a hiccup as we were kicked out of our room due to a mistake made by Marriott’s reservation personnel. We had to leave on Saturday due to the Panamanian President and the Chinese President took over the whole hotel. We were comped next door. I was not happy but Armando the Concierge supervisor took care of us handsomely. We would definitely come back.

One of my initial worries about staying at this property was its proximity to the city and being more or less in the middle of nowhere. Being the foodie that I am, I didn't want to be stuck with just the hotel's offerings. There are 4 decent restaurants available (1 being just a buffet, but a decent one) a lobby cocktail lounge with live music and a separate bar with a pool table and a small disco. But, it was a pleasant surprise that it is located just a roughly 20 minute and inexpensive Uber ride away (depending on traffic) from the main drag of Old Town where most of the cities renown restaurants are located. The property is indeed top notch, very clean and well maintained. The staff are pleasingly polite and eager to help with all of your needs. The suites are spacious and fresh and provide an excellent ocean view that can include the ships in the distance waiting in line to pass through the canal. Not exactly a surfing beach and the tide can drop quite low. Though this would be ideal for those wanting to explore tide pools. Not sure if it ever is a place for a totally tranquil stay. We were there the week of New Years and the atmosphere during the total duration of our stay was party. There were even a couple of wedding ceremonies performed in the early evenings. Overall, it seems like a place where the locals go to escape the city. But, I'd say that it is one fine escape for locals and tourists alike.

Not impressed - Poor service

It is very rarely that I walk away from a hotel and be completely unimpressed and underwhelmed but, The Westin Playa Bonita succeeded. There were several issues with this hotel and when brought to the hotels attention was disappointed by the lack of concern, understanding or followup that was promised by management. I am going to be critical but that is how disappointed I was with this hotel. Prior to booking the hotel I read many of the reviews and had discredited many of the negatives due to the lack of significant reviews posted by the Trip Advisor member but was cautiously optimistic when booking and arriving at the hotel. However, I can now say many reviews were right on the mark and I would actually question the reviewers whom posted this hotel as excellent. I am not sure what their expectations are like or where they have stayed before but this is not by any means an excellent hotel. If you do book this hotel and set your mind to that expectation I think you are going to disappoint yourself. Here is my views on the Good the bad and in-between Location - The hotel itself is in a nice relaxing part of Panama but has extremely limited accessibility to anything. You are outside the city and about a 20-30 Uber ride away (Uber is extremely functional in Panama and if off peak or low demand extremely affordable, drivers we had were all great). The hotel is gated with a guard which was nice to see but is not all that difficult to get in. Arrival and Check in - Check in only had three clerks so line was long but ended up being fine our desk clerk was friendly and there were no problems. The room was ready in a reasonable time. The hotel does not provide any information about the resort at check in such as a map, activities log or general helpful information so I would ask. Room/Suite Ocean View - The rooms are nice but there is nothing impressive. I would relate them to an older Sheraton for those who are business travelers. Nothing fancy, standard amenities. The balconies are nice and have good seating. The shower was nice when there was hot water which was none existent for two days. Bed was comfortable. The room was clean but you will find as in most humid regions a smell to the room. Housekeeping- Less then stellar, and was surprised by how they do not go above and beyond to make the rooms. We were there for 5 days and they never replaced amenities including coffees/teas, had to ask and still did not replace coffee/tea. They did not clean the full room in the suite. This even though we left a great tip daily. Executive Lounge - The executive lounge at the Westin is one of the pluses. Everything was great from the staff to the food here. They replenished often, great variety of food with different selections daily. The staff was very accommodating friendly. They went above and beyond. Pool/Grounds - There is several large pools which were relaxing and refreshing but there are several issues with them that a resort should do 10x better with. 1. They check towels one per person - Extremely cheesy and annoying. What is this the Red Roof Inn? 2. Pool itself needs to be cleaned better 3. Mixture of uncomfortable cheap lounge chairs with no cushions (Remind you only one towel per person) 4. This hotel is a jungle literally! The grounds could be amazing if they gave some TLC to all the overgrown bushes. It would also increase deck space for chairs if they cut back the bushes. 5. Complete safety hazard for older or the disabled. Limited accessibility for specialized equipment and lots of obstacles. The hotel does not clean up dirt on stairs specifically the beach. You can not even tell where the steps are b/c the sand covers them going to the beach. 6. Swim up Bar/Food Service- Service is not this hotel specialty. Prepare to wait and wait and wait for food and drinks. The staff is not attentive and busy socializing with other staff but are eager for tips. There appears to be a significantly out of date ordering/service system there and they get very aggressive when you order from another server. Food and drink quality was fine and never a problem as many here have had issues with. We did actually enjoy eating here. Restaurants - So apparently this hotel offers an all inclusive option. If you are there awhile this may be your better route. The food we found to be reasonably priced well presented and good quality but buffet seemed a bit expensive for a buffet. The staff at the restaurants were nice but seemed to have some difficulty with others around us with ordering and attentiveness. The food was consistent through out our stay. Hotel Activities - So, kids seemed to enjoy this hotel and there appeared to be a variety of activities for them. As an adult your at the wrong hotel. There are limited activities and lists are posted in elevators but found them not to be accurate as listed activities never happened. They post daily activities at the pool but this usually seemed to happen around noon lol! If you want to kayak or paddle board forget it. First there are no paddle boards as seen on the website and the limited amount of kayaks I think three go quickly and only during high tide (BTW The beach is a low tidal zone). Scheduling is tough as the staff member doing this appeared to be completely clueless and several people were double booked. SPA - SPA? Yes, there is a spa but most will be disappointed with the facilities. Outdated, broken and not maintained well. There is a nice waterfall wall that has not been working in what looks like three years. Gross! In desperate need of an update. You also have to schedule a time to use the facilities which is granted for 2 hours only although not really enforce. I would highly recommend a massage. This may have been the best massage I have had. She was great and very professional. Checkout - Again only about three people checking people in/out. The gentlemen who checked us out was completely disconnected. No how was your stay, no thank you, nothing but here is your bill. In conclusion, this hotel has potential, its not a place I would not stay given the options in this location. I just think its important for specific travelers to know what to expect here. It was not one issue but rather a series of issues that occurred making you walk away scratching your head and saying to yourself, I just paid xyz a night in Panama and this is what I got?

Most Luxurious Resort we have ever stayed at

We are currently sitting by the pool and felt the need to review this resort in case anyone is considering booking. This is by far the most BEAUTIFUL resort we have ever stayed at. This resort is a 1.5 hour drive by bus from the Playa Blanca Airport and 30 min drive from the Panama City Airport. The rooms are stunning. If you want a room with a balcony you need to book ocean view. The Forest view rooms do not have a balcony but the view is beautiful as well. The food. Oh my god from the buffets to the A La Cartes you will not be disappointed. It’s like eating at fine dining restaurants in Canada or the USA. The high tide/low tide is beautiful to watch on the beach. You have beach access for swimming 6 hours of the day and the other 6 the water goes way out to the ocean and you can go for a nice walk on the sea floor. The pools are warm and crystal clean. The staff go out of their way to ensure that your stay is perfect. If your considering taking tours while at this hotel we would highly suggest the partial canal tour and The Gamboa Rainforest Tour. They were amazing. The Westin Playa Bonita is now at the top of our list for luxury hotels and we will definitely be back to visit again.

My stay at the Westin Playa Bonita was excellent. The food at the numerous restaurants in the hotel (including a sushi, my favorite) was always of very good quality and the options at the buffets were abundant. Amazing pools with very friendly service. I very much enjoyed the closeness with the beach. Made use of both the spa and the hotel gym, and I was very happy with both experiences. The room I was in was spacious and comfortable. The staff was always very friendly and competent. Overall, I would recommend the stay to anyone visiting Panamá city.
