No Power and a Foaming Toilet

We “upgraded” to the reserve after hearing how horrible the regular rooms were from our travel companions. We traveled with a group of 70 people. We were not told the reserve was mainly for families and we traveled as a couple. The staff should have suggest the royal service instead. We had a small shower and large jacuzzi tub which we didn’t use. The carpet was stained and the room was turned over late in the afternoon when we wanted to prepare for dinner. We had one day without power from 10 am-5 pm. During that time the humidity soaked into our bedding making it wet. Of course that was the day the room was not turned over because housekeeping came when we had to get ready for dinner. It was also the same day that our toilet spewed foam (see photo). When we finally did get to sleep that night at 1 am due to the toilet mess, we slept in a wet cold bed. The water main also broke when we were there and several of our traveling companions were without running water for quite some time. The service at all of the restaurants, aside from Passion which was excellent, was horrible. If we did get water they rarely refilled it. The majority of the staff was not helpful when we asked what activities were available or if we could get something particular. Room service shouldn’t even be listed on the sheet as when you do call and order they don’t deliver it. Activities that were set for certain times never happened and when asked why they didn’t have that activity that day we were told “the time has passed” even though we had been waiting at the pool for it for several hours in advance. Apparently you also receive a coupon book at the reserve upon arrival. We did not receive it and only heard about it through a fellow guest. Had we had that coupon book we would have saved at least $80. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. We will not be returning.

Beautiful Resort but the DR strikes again

I start off by saying that 7 out of the 9 people that we traveled with ended up with some sort of stomach issue. This is the second time I’ve been to the DR and the second time I have gotten sick. With that being said it does impact my review because we weren’t fully able to enjoy our vacation. Pros: Beautiful property, lots of activities on the grounds (Eduardo was awesome), wonderful staff, great rooms. Always able to get lounge chairs on the beach. Cons: Seaweed season (no fault of the resort), room views not so great, pool/beach staff were not always readily available, booze is watered down (possibly watered down with their tap water. The people that got sick were drinking mixed cocktails. The two others were not). We did stay in the Reserve section and I’m glad we did. The feel in this section is much more relaxed and nicer. Even though you are further from the beach, the walk isn’t far and you have a shuttle option. Even if you stay in the main part of the resort you aren’t guaranteed to be close to anything because the property is so large. The pool at the Paradisus is very beautiful but very crowded and most difficult to find a chair. The pool at the Reserve is also gorgeous but not shaded so it gets hot. The food at the resort is so-so. I wasn’t expecting much in this department anyway, so I wasn’t really disappointed. Overall, the staff really did try their best to make sure your stay was great. If this resort was in a different locale I would return, but since it’s in the DR, I won’t be.

Great Kids program and great kids pool

we loved the kids pool. Was a nice all inclusive resort for family with young kids. Can't wait to go back. My kids loved playing in the play area and getting face painting. Plenty of activities for the kids. The part that was inconvenient was to take the golf carts to the beach area but other than that, not so bad. Kids enjoyed the Hibachi restaurant.

We somehow skipped through the usually good customer service cracks

We usually love the Melia Paradisus resorts and have stayed at multiple locations so we know what and what not to expect; we’ve always considered our stays as 5 stars. Somehow everything here was an effort for the most basic requests. Upon arrival, room wasn’t ready, no wash cloth or champagne as usual. The person assigned to us wasn’t available so we were passed around a few folks. We requested a king bed, ended up with 2 doubles pushed together so we couldn’t sit up in bed and was missing a nightstand. Changed rooms the next day but had to wait until 3 so almost 2 days without having a room to use. When we got to the room the sofa bed wasn’t made for the kids, asked 3x for it to be done and were just left the sheets ourselves to do it! Service is very inconsistent-3 towels one day, 4 another, no hand towels. Some items in snack bar replaced others not. Usually always had to ask for a more silverware at meals etc. nothing was horrible but a lot of extra little things and effort to have the obvious basics tended to. While someone was there at the special beach section we had to flag them down if we needed something-they didn’t come by on their own. Dinner reservations were tough because we were passed around for a day or two. We sat through a program where we were told it wasn’t a time share but it really was to get a free Passion dinner which our concierge booked for a wed evening knowing we have kids and the kids club closed @ 7. Needless to say we missed our dinner. And the kids club closes at 7 most evenings making it not really practical if adults want a night out. This is definitely weird and not like Mexico. The resort is nice but huge-honestly too big for my taste. All the main restaurants are on the main campus that you have to golf cart to if you stay at the reserve, while the kids club and spa are at the reserve; so if you’re like most and stay the main resort and need these services frequently then it’s a lot of back and forth. We usually go back to Melias. I think if all the little things were addressed this would be a great place to stay. Just a couple of inevitable comparisons: Food was okay - way better than most all inclusives but not as good as the resorts in Mexico. there was nothing that stood out as unique to the island culture. Staff: folks were always polite and courteous but not very warm and welcoming. You feel a little awkward around them. Could be the training or a language barrier (more present here than in Mexico) Housekeeping is very inconsistent and doesn’t seem to use a check list of what is provided based on # in room, - odd They will help you if needed but everything has to get elevated to 2-3 folks up to resolve. Eg. asked for the sofa bed to be made was given sheets. Showed front desk photo and they said call supervisor, supervisor apologized and we still waited. Honestly for something so trivial please just make the bed when it’s 10pm with 2 little ones!
